Can LEXAN exceed robot dimensions?
 

Can the LEXAN (and the bolts used to fasten it) exceed the robot dimensions by 3/16"? -Thanks

I'm pretty sure nothing can extend outside of the 30" x 36" x 60" area, (except for a removable bumper placed 2" to 8" above the field, extending out 4".)

The robot has to fit within a 30"x36"x60" box. If, at the competition, it does not fit in that box, you will not pass inspection. In other words, if your robot is 30.1875"x36.1875"x14", it won't pass.

If your using the lexan as shielding and it does not exceed that 30"x36"x60" box, then you can have it extend out as far as you want, as long as it still fits in the box.

If you can punch the lexan and not hurt your hand, you can say it's you bumper. Good luck trying the same thing with the bolts.

well, no...
nothing can exceed the dementions besides the "removable bumpers" because what they do is put it in a box that is the size limit... if it doesn't fit, its to big... the bumpers have to be removable because they can go out of the size limits, and the box is exact...

Actually I probably could. It is a pretty resilient material and would probably bend and absorb most of the force. Oo wait I'm thinking plexiglass.

I can punch a bag of lexan shavings without hurting my hand. If you wanted to attach bags of lexan shavings to the outside of your robot, you could get away with saying it's your "bumper."

Um... the point of the dimension constraints is so that your robot fits in them.

Yeah thanks, you guys answered our question perfectly. We fit in the dimensions fine, and we are going to mount styrofoam bumpers too.

You crazies.... I can punch LEXAN and not hurt my hand... yeah... I'm kinda strong... but anyone can bend a 1/8" piece of lexan... the thing DOES yield, ya know... acutally, you can bend it 360 degrees.

Interesting experiment... bend a 12" piece of LEXAN 360 degrees, put it in a clamp, and hit it with a claw hammer... It's really fun!

Love that LEXAN... you can also crease it with a sheet metal break to 90 degrees and it gets super-strong.... you can see more of our bent LEXAN and stuff on our robot... come check us out at the GA and UCF regionals!

In conclusion... LEXAN (bent) or any other polycarb is GREAT at absorbing shocks... it's nice and springy... and bulletproof too! (LEXAN, not the polycarb)

Take some time out from robotics and shoot a .22 at some Lexan... it stops a couple of bullets...

Lexan or polycarbonate sheet I believe is used in things like.....

hurricane shutters (the clear ones)....we had some donated by a local Storm Shutteres place in previous years.

bullet proof glass....its apart of it or most of it. I don't remember where I heard it but that speaks for itself.

We like lexan. Our robot last year had lexan side panels, and they took a beating, but never broke. It's got battle scars galore, but it's still intact.
