OT: Terror Alert High

What do you all think of this Orange Alert that they've imposed this weekend?

To me, it just seems that the media's making a rather large deal about it. They're stirring up fear by saying, 'Orange is the second-highest homeland security alert level,' while neglecting to mention the fact that we've been on the third-highest alert level, yellow, since Sept. 11. While it's certainly something we should note, it's not something that needs to be shown in the corner of the screen of every news station incessantly.

It looks like Blix is getting a bit further with the inspections. Hopefully, the UN won't let us go to war quite yet.

(In best Russian accent) Your CNN is feeding you lies!

CNN especially is making a big deal of your little warning chart that means and does nothing, from a department of the government that serves a similar purpose. Over the past three years, CNN has slowly been losing credibility and becoming ultra-sensationalized and partisan.

"Hmm... I was thinking that it was about time for another terror alert. When in doubt, turn up the heat on America's simmering fear of the rest of the world."

My views are a little to cynical and twisted to express here, but let's just say I think it means very, very, very little.

Anyway, this probably belongs in chit-chat, the ChiefDelphi equivalent of "Off-Topic", which is what I assume the OT means in the title.

D'oh!

I've never scrolled down far enough to see that forum.

And yes, OT=Off Topic

THe sole sources of my news our my AP Government class and the Daily Show (sadly, the least partisan news source in America. Even if they're a LITTLE liberal, look at CBS, NBC, ABC, and FOX--all right wing fanatic channels...). These terror alerts are a joke-- "It's time to suspect your neighbors of treason, folks! First person to turn in a friend for remotely suspicious reasons gets a candy!"

I'm going to have to agree with the Russian- er, Canadian here. That color code is screwed up and does absolutely nothing usefull, kinda like CNN lately.

My favorite quote is by Paul over at @Forums "Perhaps they should start to use shades of magenta or pretty pink fushia. How about a nice pattern around the border of the current terrorism alert colour of the day:rolleyes: .

Classic.

DanLevin247 10-02-2003 16:45

This "color chart" idea is pathetic. It makes me angry. Not only is America publicly announcing it's "fear level" it makes a fool of itself at the same time. I mean, say terrorists attack us again, are people going to be running in the streets screaming the names of colors to reflect their fears?

"how are you today ted?"
"ehh....green"

Morgoth 11-02-2003 10:19

I don't think the government really cares what the terror rating is. They are just doing it so that if something does happen they can say, "told you so." Besides, no one can keep track of the colors, using the numbers one to ten would be more convenient.

Jay5780 13-02-2003 17:29

The US Government is not using the terror alert ratings as an "I told you so" they are using it because after the attacks in 2001 people were saying the the government had no clue it was going to happen, so the issue the terror alert system to let the public know that there is a threat and to let us know to keep our eyes open.

Marc P. 13-02-2003 17:34

Based on that logic, who's to say nothing will happen if there is a green alert? I think it's futile to try to put a label on something as unpredictable as human nature.

EddieMcD 13-02-2003 18:55

I agree with Marc. I mean, for all we know, a bomb could go off in the White House in 5 seconds when the alert is still orange or in 5 years when the alert is green.

Joe Matt 13-02-2003 19:36

I used to put funny terror levels in the forum news of our forums. One said: "Terror Alert Color: Teal with magenta spots- eat as much ice cream as you can to stop terror."

I'll go add something up there now...
