I know you can order the exact field carpet online, and they have a lot of 12' wide cutoff sections that you can buy. We bought a 12'x36' section for our practice field, and it was pretty cheap. It just happens to be exactly the right width for one of the colored carpet sections.

How do you think they decided on the size of the scoring zone?

I'm prolly gonna show up, trolling friends now for drive partner. I've done 10 hour drives by myself before, and think a friend might make it easier.

DDR what? I'd be so happy to meet other FIRSTers into DDR. So far I've mostly gone to comps where the people don't like DDR. Its unfortunate. So which of these are close?

Also, spectating? That is for the evening. Daytime is for volunteering. :)

Yes please rely on these people for official IRI information... do not associate any ideas/thoughts/comments I have been posting as official information. I'm just throwing stuff out there, like I usually do.

I'm a pretty big DDR Fanatic now.. not that I'm good or anything  heh anyways, I'm not quite sure which location would be closer... possibly the Washington Square Mall, or the Circle Center Mall... but I'm not sure. I'll get back to you on that one. Oh yea, I might be wearing this shirt at one point - http://www.indyddr.com/store/shirts.htm :yikes:

Ricky Q. 07-05-2003 19:48

So with registration coming up Monday, lets get a head count? Who's going to be at the 2003 IRI? Cooney-Quest #269 will be there with the tailgating party in full force. :p

Jeff Waegelin 07-05-2003 20:03

Still trying to rally up support from my team, but I think you can probably expect the FEDS to make an appearance...

Katie Reynolds 07-05-2003 22:46

Expect to see #93 there this year! As soon as I get two of our engineers to agree to go, we should be golden. And we've got to get some DDR going there. Chell and I will figure out a way to get our PS2s and pads down there! :yikes:

heck, im feeling good right now... You can visit the IndianaFIRST.org forums at http://www.indianafirst.org/forums/

There, you can post about IRI, and Indiana FIRST. Please use them, so we dont have to clutter Brandons boards :] and it keeps all IRI duscussion in one place.

Team 48 will be there...if we are fortunate enough to successfully register on Monday. IRI demand seems to greatly outweigh IRI supply. Any of you Indianans (Indianites? Indianers?) ever thought about putting up the 40 spots for auction on Ebay? :-P

You should figure out a way to bring them to the competition site ;) that would be so awesome!! .... hmmm... maybe an organized DDR-run would be fun too... meaning like, anyone who wants to go play at an arcade, we could... but I doubt many people would wanna do this.
Bring the pads and your PS2! I think I'm about to drop the bomb :D

Wayne C. 08-05-2003 18:48

Are you ready for 25?

We talked about it today and the guys want to do it. If the invitation is still open, and the robot Gods prevail, team 25 looks forward to a major rematch with team 111 at IRI. The deal is that the seniors work at our car wash on the 24th, their proceeds raise the $300 registration for the event and their parents give written approval for the plan. So the ball is in their court. ; )

The senior drive team, Big Mike and myself are looking into making the expedition out. This will be their last chance to drive FIRST robots before going off to college so the action should be fast and furious. And a road trip with the guys.... well ....

So-is team 25, a non Hoosier group from Joisey, invited to the invitational?

A team social at Indiana Beach??

For all you who don't know, Indiana Beach is Indiana's one and only theme park. Its best roller coaster has about a 90 foot drop, i'm not sure.

Since I like rap music, how about a freestyle or written rap battle, with breakdancing on the HDPE. Like this...

[X] No image available

Sorry I didn't upload my masterpiece image of a guy breakdancing on the HDPE.

There will be 4 divisions. The first will be the freestyle division. For those of you who don't know what freestyle is, it's where you and another person do a "battle of words". The words have to be in some sort of rhyme, and to a rhythm which will be played on the speaker system. Your goal is to prove that you are better (in a rap sort of way) than your opponent. Cuss words are used, but A LOT MORE POINTS will be given to those who come up with creative, personal, hard-hitting, below the belt insults. There is no prep time and it will be done impromptu.

The second division is written freestyle. In this, you have 30 minutes to write a rap song, which is also competed. The winning song(s) get some dj and background music addition and are played the next day.

The third division is subject rap. You will be given a subject and 50 minutes to write a 3-4 minute recited rap. Judges will judge you on how well you conveyed the message, whether you stay on toopic or stray far from it, humor, ghettoness, how well you can rap, and of course, rhyming and rhythm. Again, the winning rap will be played the next day.

The fourth division is breakdancing. Judges will judge the breakdancing moves, and the best breakdancer will get to breakdance on the HDPE at the conclusion of the tournament.

I know its long and it won't happen, it's still cool.

I'd rather have the team social in one of the random corn fields. As much as I love Indiana, this is the worst idea I have ever heard.

Unless you like looking at hundreds of disgusting carp feeding on people's random overthrown items, a lot of untamed mullets, and swimming in 'Purified Well Water!' (that's straight from their signs). Maybe I'm just prissy from being raised next to Chicago all of my life, but I'm still gagging from the thought of those nasty fish.

aggggggggg,

aggggggggg,

Amanda

This is hilarious!

Indiana Beach was my first job ever. I grew up in Monticello and worked there, as did most of my friends. I started as one of those guys who walks around with a broom and "pooper-scooper", cleaning up popcorn, cigarette butts, and much worse stuff (getting paid $2.65 per hour, btw). I ended up working at "the pier" as a lifeguard in the "filtered well water".

If you were a hick like me, it was not a bad place to grow up and work... it is pretty much a glorified state fair-type place, with many mullets and tube tops as Amanda mentioned above.

There are a couple of rides that are neat... some small roller coasters that are well-designed (Hoosier Hurricane and Cornball Express) and a really cool "ski lift" ride that takes you over the whole park. But... it is NOTHING compared to ANY Six Flags. Think of Houston's Six Flags, put about 1/4 of their rides into about 1/8 of the space and place it on a dirty, dammed up, over populated river (Lake Shafer).

Having said all this... I totally agree with Amanda. I would definitely not suggest a meeting there, unless you would want to go and "people watch" for your entertainment.

Besides, Indiana Beach is about 2 hours away from Indianapolis... there are many of things to do in Indy that would be much better.

Also... the best theme park in Indiana is Holiday World, in Santa Claus... at the south end of the state. It's about 3 hours from Indy.

Andy B.

ps... also, by the way... we are realizing that many more than 40 teams are wanting to play... we are working on that issue (no promises, though)

gsensel 09-05-2003 02:25

Also it is not the only theme park in Indiana. There is Holiday World (Santa Clause Land) in Santa Clause Indiana. Which IMO is better but farther from here.

suneel112 09-05-2003 07:58

All right, I admit it.

I haven't been to very many theme parks, and I didn't know what to compare indiana beach with OF COURSE it is MUCH WORSE than six flags, and overall, I guess your right,

Indiana Beach Sucks.

But the rap tournament idea is still cool. It is modern, and popular.

I dunno.

whatever it is, it has to be fun and cool.

Wow... Sounds like it's going to be the biggest robotics party of the year... No true FIRST-a-holic can pass on that! At least not a west coast FIRST-a-holic! It will be my revenge for the 5 weeks I was on the road for without any fun! :P

Save me a share of the volunteer food! (oh wait I must've confused this with a regional... :D )

I have a feeling I wouldn't want to run the competition this size, although I am quite interested in seeing if you guys can pull it off.

Libby Ritchie 09-05-2003 14:31

Once we get our teams that will compete at the IRI, I will send out a packet of information that gives ideas/locations on what you can do while visiting the great state of Indiana!

As for Scott...STOP TRYING TO SELL OUR CHILDREN TO PURDUE FANS! And for those of you that can sympathize, I was raised in a devout IU home...then married into a devout PU family. So, I always say, "GO BALL STATE!" :)

Wetzel 09-05-2003 14:40

I guess the IU-PU rivalry is similar to Tech-UVA.

I think that it is time to start looking for roommates...

Ken? Jim? Bill?

What about just showing up with a robot and running it around in a corner somewhere, would that be ok? (And the TKats BETTER do that;))

Although Indiana Beach does indeed prove that there is not only more than corn in Indiana but also talking pelicans, this 'team party' would get very old very quickly. But hey, I can only judge for myself. Maybe some people would find it interesting - has Ken Leung or Brandon Martus ever seen a TRUE mullet?

IRI Registration 6:00 Central time

All teams interested in the IRI:

This is just a friendly reminder that registration begins today at 6:00 Central time.

We are planning this year's event to be bigger and better than any off season event since "Rumble at the Rock".

For those of you who have not attended IRI, we not only focus on strong competition, but we also make sure these things happen:

- Great music is played throughout the competition
- a distinguished crew of judges hand out awards, just like a real FIRST competition
- good food is available to attending teams
- the referees make every effort to be consistent and clear
- the field will be an "official FIRST field"
- field scorers are top notch, experienced experts
- competition will be fierce - many of the best teams in the country will be playing. This year's winning alliance in Houston (111, 469, 65) have played here multiple times. In fact, we are planning to have as many as 9 different National Championship teams participating here.

Within a few days, we will be able to provide some more details on this competition. Team 234 (Cyberblue), team 45 (TechnoKats) and team 393 (Full Metal Jackets) are again partnering to host the IRI. We also get alot of help from other Indiana teams, and we look forward to cooperating once again for this fun event.

As a reminder...

If your team is strongly interested in this event, get together and register tonight. The registration fee is $300 per competing robot, and the event will take place on July 18-19 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Andy B.

/edit - you can register at this link: Indiana First

Dave_222 07-06-2003 18:04

Katie Reynolds 17-06-2003 12:47

Hey everyone,

I'm sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news, but team 93 will no longer be attending this year's IRI due to some unforseen difficulties.

We'll see everyone next season!

Cows? :D ;)

Mike Schroeder 18-06-2003 18:08

okay someone better bring me to see some cows :p

Erin Rapacki 18-06-2003 18:10

I guess I'll have to taste Indiana corn... but I'm gonna bring some NE corn that I sell at the farm stand so I can compare (my corn is REALLY REALLY good, it'll be tough to beat in taste test)

The place I work is a dairy farm too... I've experienced the cows (what's that smell??)

what else is there in the midwest? Seriously... I'm wondering

Deej 18-06-2003 18:17

I know that its not in Kokomo anymore...but never, ever let Andy Baker try to hook you up at the Kokomotel if you ever head out to tecnokat country.

Nothing. Trust me. We can take you to Chicago... and that's about it. Unless you'd like to experience the horrors written about here...

He lies! ;)

Considering that we currently have no regionals in our great state, IRI's the best thing to come along in Indiana since...
since...
well, in a long time.

Hehe... figures... when M. is asked about "what's in the midwest" we get a list of amusement parks.

Erin Rapacki 19-06-2003 00:00

On that note... I DO have a six flags season pass;

who wants to ride some local roller coasters in the middle of the night!

Great America is furthest away from IRI. . .probably 4 or 5 hours. Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville lies to the south, maybe a bit closer, but not much. It's a far lesser park.

If you're ever interested in a visit to Six Flags New England or the Great Escape, I can manage that pretty easily. . .

Great Escape is 20 min from my house... 2 min from my old office.
Heh... there's nothing there worth traveling for. Except maybe the Comet.

Erin Rapacki 19-06-2003 07:51

I live 15 minutes away from Six Flags New England... I almost got a job there as a lifeguard this summer :(

... but another job opportunity came through :D

Andy Baker 19-06-2003 10:07

OK... I gotta weigh in on this. Consider me your friendly neighborhood Hoosier Hospitality ambassador. I do think that I am qualified, since I grew up in Monticello on a hog farm.

I've lived in this silly state all of my life. When I went to college, I tried to get as far away from home as I could afford, so I ended up at the University of Evansville . Speaking of colleges, there are some great ones in Indiana. Indiana University is an excellent school for many majors, and Purdue Universtiy is excellent for engineering, aviation, vet and agriculture to name a few majors. Rose Hulman is another great engineering school while Butler University is also top notch. So, if you want to take some time visiting college campuses while you are here, these are some to check out.

Indianapolis is a fun city, with a racetrack, you may have heard if it: Indianapolis Motor Speedway . The IMS museum is definitely worth the trip to the west side of Indy, even if you are not a race fan. There is a world class Children's Museum on the near north side of the city that will even be intersting to teenagers. This place is especially good for your FIRST mentors who may be bringing your little kids into Indy for the IRI.

Circle Center is a big, fancy shopping mall that is located in downtown Indy. It is new and neat. There is an IMAX, American Indian Museum, and the NCAA headquarters on the near west side of downtown also. These and other attractions can be seen here: Indy Attractions.

Also, there is the Indianapolis Zoo, which is a very good zoo. Don't forget that Indy has a great AAA baseball team, with a really neat stadium, seen here: Indianapolis Indians.

For nightlife, Indiana bars do not let people under 21 into the door. But there are other options, Block Party is kinda fun if you are into VR and video games, while there is a Jillian's in Downtown Indy, along with a slew of other restaurants.

Then again, if you are feeling really ambitious, you could come to Kokomo, see some attractions, and you surely would want to see Old Ben.

Whew... some of you other Hoosiers may want to chime in here. As for you visitors... if you clicked on all of these links, then you may just be crazy enough to enjoy it here.

Take care,
Andy B.

Elyse Holguin 19-06-2003 17:15

i just gave my host family €45 for this months internet bill so i can watch a live feed if there is one of IRI... and my family's excited here.... as are about 15 friends of my siblings here. i have sparked much German interest in FIRST (my hostdad's a teacher...i smell a team brewing). make us proud... this will be their first FIRST experience.... oh, and PLEASE let there be a live feed or SOAP coverage.... i've really built this up here...

Yeah if you come to Kokomo, stop by and visit the infamous Baker family residence and the Gilbert residence. Plus when you stop by bring a few rolls of toliet paper to let them know you were there ;)

And DJ, how would we find those amazing tourist attractions?

Andy Baker 19-06-2003 23:00

Amanda,

OK, OK... Ball State is a good school too. My dad went there and he has done well in his career.

(and I am going to ignore the DJ - toilet paper post... my dog bites!)
