Afterall.. I ended up on the phone almost the whole day outside of the testing time, following the progress of the robot. ...that's Obsessed with FIRST!:D |

You know that you're Passionate about FIRST when:
(All of which I've seen from one or more of the college advisors on Team 461) 1. You come back from Winter vacation early to prepare for the kickoff. 2. You make a choice after your sophomore year that you'd be best off spending at extra year at college (and paying the out of state tuition) so that you can lighten your load and be more accessible FIRST mentor. 3. You spend time in professors office hours getting ahead on material so that you can apply it to a design. 4. You realize that your 21st birthday will occur during the last week of the build season this year, and it doesn't annoy or bother you. 5. When you put into your weekly schedule two all-nighters per week. 6. You take as a loss some future job opportunities by taking a .4 or .5 lower GPA than you're capable of in hopes that you're practical design and leadership experience will shimmer in your resume brighter than the magic number. ......when you note a lack of teachers to continue the team, go to a local college and become a mentor for the team, schedule your classes so that you can be available seven days a week for robotics......and spend the first day of your winter break at said school planning robotics........ ......when you design your team's shirt with 15000 digits of pi on it, because your team number appears three times in those digits...... ......when you realize that you've been staring at CD for hours and haven't gotten up - or eaten - or anything else - and it isn't even the build season yet..... ......when you make up an AIM screen name with both your robot name AND number in it.....and use it....... |

... when your stuck in non-moving traffic on the freeway when u glance over to the sholder and u see a funny shapped thing. :ahh: u shout, " THATS A VAN DOOR WINDOW LIFT MOTOR!" and then launch into a whole story about how u used that motor on previous robots and think dang if only i could just jump out of the car and grab that i bet we could still use it for next year! :)

When certain things in your life leave you with the state of mind, that you will no longer be able to participate in FIRST.... however, yesterday morning, I couldn't keep myself away from the local kick-off site. I also realized that I will be assisting three different teams by letting them borrow my brain at any time, and have spent almost all of my awake time on CD or other FIRST related tasks since kick-off......... --> I think my plan is failing. :ahh:

When you realize that this years game really is a combination of the past 5 years competitions and by chance your team has competed in all of them.
When you realize that new ideas by rookies and old ideas by veterans are going to collide with each other. When you realize that the rookies do have good points, but the veterans have experience with what works and what does not work. And finally: You know you're addicted to FIRST when you learn to combine the ideas of rookies and veterans and you already have an awesome design within 3 days of brainstorming!!! |

- you go to VA with two friends from camp to visit one friend's family..and her whole family automatically assumes you're a computer whiz because you're on a robotics team
- while roadtripping with same camp friends, you see things that remind you of robotics, and you automatically launch into your stories - you decide not to get a job this season because then you wouldn't be able to go to the competitions - your main friends are divided into robotics and camp and anyone in between is just weird - you cry when you see someone who bought a ducktape wallet instead of making it themselves - you schedule your college classes so they don't interfere with team meetings, even if that means not taking a painfully desired class because the only one open is during meeting time |

-when you get more excitied about seeing dean kamen or riding a segway than winning front row seats your fav. bands concert -when screw jokes become unavoidable in your work area -you resort to talking to the robot during late nite work sessions b/c you realize thats your only true friend -when your friends stop talking to you because u all you do is talk about the robot. - Your friends say, " well if you love the robot that much why don't you marry it?" and you seriously contemplate being able to. - your teachers tell you if they get one more paper handed in with scribblings of the robot in the margine they will fail you! ((its only happened to me once, but i didn't mean to...really!)) |
