Check out our new site(prepare to be wowed)

Here is the site our web team created. Pretty good if you ask me.UHS Robotics 849

mod edit: i can.

evulish 23-02-2003 00:33

Huh. I see a whole lot of nothing. The flash movie didn't load or something. *shrug* And that first image is not very dialup-friendly. From the little bit I saw of it, nice.

D. Gregory 23-02-2003 00:34

Give it time, the one thing our web guys forgot about was the competition testing situation, give it time.

Daniel Brim 23-02-2003 00:44

Good formatting and programming, but it needs a lot more content.

Martin 23-02-2003 00:55

:)

slow server .....kinda not alot of content......WOW, hehehhe

tchescow 23-02-2003 02:55

Beautiful design!

Clanat 23-02-2003 04:11

I like the design. It looks really good. As you get more content to add, it will be even better.

Stephen Kowski 23-02-2003 08:13

Your work should be commended because I know what a pain Flash can be, but I always think less is more. Good work none the less.

kristen 23-02-2003 09:35

Wow, impressive design. It's deff original :) Not much content though, which is the downside for a page about your team/robot. But the flash is awesome!

Greg Needel 23-02-2003 10:34

very nice the one thing I would sugest is making the page viewable by other browsers....I use phoenix ( a mozilla offspring) and I can't see the flash page.....just a thought other than that very cool page

Jack 23-02-2003 14:33

i'm running on cable, and it still took like 30 seconds to load. Personally, wayyy too far on the flash. ;) - You aren't making a movie. But, I gotta give whoever made it a heck of a lot of credit because that's a ton of flash.

Brandon Martus 23-02-2003 14:35

I thought maybe it was just taking a while to load, which would be weird on my broadband. After a few minutes, I gave up on it because it wasn't loaded.

tarbell's post reminded me that I am also using Mozilla. I'd check into why it wont open in browsers other then IE.

I'm on a 1.5 meg DSL connection and it took a bit to load (around 30 seconds, which is bad). Nice flash stuff though.

FRANK(WGH) 23-02-2003 22:53

nice site

Good design but very slow.
more content would be nice too.
but other than that very nice. esecilally the graphics:]

AJ Quick 23-02-2003 23:01

It took a while here as well.

The site looks great though, but there are too many problems with the speed, and content that will probably get you marked down. What regionals are you going to?

The splash screen was made for 1024x768... but the standard screen size is 800x600, and well the image was way too big for 1024x768... resize that.

Other then what has been said, your site is great! I hope we're not going to the same regional.

activemx 24-02-2003 02:03

lot of eyecandy:yikes:

but little content. You need a lot more!
i Would recommend a seprate Non flash page

cptnshiner 24-02-2003 16:07

Well done. The only thing that bothered me was the horizontal scrolling because of your image on your index page. Maybe make it a little smaller to compensate for different resolutions? Other than that, it's design was crafted and integrated with the content very well. Was there a team on your website or was this just you?

Raven_Writer 24-02-2003 16:08

There's a screen resolution detection script on the internet. It might come in use for your site.

gliebowitz 24-02-2003 18:19

It's a little too cluttered and clunky for my liking. Then again, how someone views interactive design, like any other art form, is subjective. Practically, though.. the playback was poor on my PowerBook using Safari. The site lacks a consistent interface and is unattractive, to say the least.

Spend time considering your audience and study the key aspects of effective design. Realize that you don't need to fill up empty space with senseless images (white space is good!)

Team 75's site is so clean and professional. Is this an example of student work or did a sponsor assist in making this site? The flash is very clean and attractive, with attention to many good design elements (as you mentioned). It is also easy to navigate.

Jeremy_Mc 25-02-2003 17:03

i agree .. both this team's and 75's sites are very nice...

we very rarely used flash on our site [ www.firstubergeeks.com ] as to avoid compatibility problems.

it even looks good in links/lynx ;)

that might be something to aim for with a non-flash version of your sites

gliebowitz 25-02-2003 17:26

Nope... Entire site was designed, programmed, and hosted by the student web site team (myself and JP Ren). IT Media is a company of mine, btw.

Thanks :)

reisser 25-02-2003 17:32

Team 75:
Did the website team have a mentor or art director who helped them produce the concept, layout, and color scheme for the site? Is there a person with a degree in design concepts providing assistance of any kind?

Good luck to all

jmort03 25-02-2003 17:35

that looks cool....flash...ahhh:D

gliebowitz 25-02-2003 17:49

I was in charge of design and programming (I am in 9th grade at Hillsborough High School) and JP took care of the content planning and overall strategy. Some of the other sites I've done are at http://www.itmediaco.com.

Not exactly. The site was student designed and operated with hardly any involvement from our engineering mentors (which explains why we have not yet transfered our domain to the official URL: www.roboraiders.com) Anyway, we had to do a bunch of tweaks before our mentor/advisor approved our design

As far as the color scheme goes, Greg and I tried to give our old site a major facelift. Our old site used red as a dominant theme because there was red in our original logo. Luckily, grey seem to have worked with the red in our logo to produce something better than before. Oh yes, most of you wouldn't believe that we only used a library of 15 or so images (total) from previous years to make the website, so our choice in which image to use was basically nil. What you see on the homepage (the background) is actually from an inventor model submitted for the Autodesk Inventor award from 1-2 years back.

Glad you like the site. Now I'll have to spiff up the "design showcase."

And give greg all the credit for his arts & crafts :p

EIROBOTICS86 25-02-2003 21:08

Nice Graphics

RobDeCotiis 25-02-2003 22:20

i don't wanna know how long that took.. i've been using flash for years and.. hahaha thank the lord i didnt make that.

Kevin Smith 27-02-2003 21:56

Original Poster: Nice eye candy, but its kind of big/slow loading, even on cable. Also, the font is kind of hard to read.

To gliebowitz: I like the site.. If you are only in 9th grade, I can't even imagine what you'll be doing in college and beyond.

Munkaboo 27-02-2003 22:14

Holy crap, you guys got ATI as a sponsor? What did they give you?

<3 my Radeon 9700 Pro.

D. Gregory 27-02-2003 22:31

They gave us 2k. I begged for an AIW 9700 ( i need it to effectively CAD the robot=)) to no avail. They are our 2nd largest sponsor and their headquarters is about 10-15 minutes from our school. Thanks for teh comments, I talked to web team about the slow loading. Content will be going up in the next week.

He has a major point w/ this. There is absolutely nothing on it basically.
