Under the Radar Teams

There has been a lot of talk about a few certain teams that haven't posted pictures yet (71,111) and I as much as anyone am dying to see these two bots I’m sure I will be amazed with them as I have been with some of the other amazing bots this year. However there are a few other teams that seem to have slipped under the radar that are remaining quiet and I am dying to see their bots.
365
188
267
19
38
254
66
308
311
233
69
716
175
118
151
237
33
88
That’s just to name a few off the top of my head.
So anyone from these teams want to speak up?
What bots haven't been shown yet that you guys would really like to see?

We aren't showing ours until competition. Maybe I'll post an autocad teaser sometime this week.

comet22 23-02-2003 15:01

you forgot 141, believe me it will not be a repeat of last year.

Ed Crammond 23-02-2003 15:05

im kindof interested in the thinking behind keeping robot pictures secret.
Its not as if people are going to make changes to their robot ont he basis of them (they would be very foolish if they did). There is an arguement that people may adjust their tactics after seeing them, but its not going to make very much of a difference as they cant see how effective the robot is until the competition. Which is when it matters.
As i see it, good driving is where victory lies and posting pictures isnt going to affect that.

You are well within you rights to withold images of your robot, though i think if everyone posted then it would reduce over-competativeness. It's also akin to what happens in the real world - open science - where scientists share their findings with everyone else, so everyone benefits.

Swampcoder2 23-02-2003 15:24

I'm interested in 312, 168 and 147. In fact I'd be willing to show a deployment vid of 179 for those ;-)

Radar

I noticed that MOE365 is at the top of the wanted list. hehehe. There is not much that I can tell you about our robot other than that...

1) It may or may not have a drive train that involves treads, worm steering, wheels, or walking thingys.
2) It may or may not be able to go under the bar.
3) It may or may not be able to climb over other bots.
4) Teams present at the Chessapeake Regional will be the first to see the Miracle Workerz' 2003 creation.

Sorry about the vaugeness, but I am sure that everyone will like our bot this year.

sanddrag 23-02-2003 15:26

What ever happened to 696? :D

Just a couple weeks and all will be revealed...

mav 23-02-2003 15:33

I'm interested in seeing what team 126 is doing this year

Joe3 23-02-2003 15:58

GeroniMOE (I don't like the name either, but it was either this or Tipy the Wonderbot) will be revealed in a picture or two either on Monday or Wednesday. Untill then, you'll all just have to marvel at some of these other great robots.

Andrew Rudolph 23-02-2003 18:56

You all should check out http://www.firstrobotics.net the gallery is coming together nicely this year, you can see 168 on there, now make with the video!!!

Pin Man 23-02-2003 19:03

Well you can forget team 88... You can see us at the competitions... We are not going to post pictures nor talk about our robot until the competion... We are gonna come in and surprise everyone...

sevisehda 23-02-2003 19:21

Its a veritable brass ensomble in here with everyone tooting their won horn.

wow, pretty harsh....if people are proud of their robot and want to brag a little? so what? it is harmless, talking to other teams about their accomplishment and what they are proud of is a part of FIRST. if team's didn't self promote It would probably be pretty hard for judges to give out the chairman's award or any other for that matter.

sevisehda 23-02-2003 20:01

Its a veritable brass ensomble in here with everyone tooting their own horn.

I didn't mean to be unnecessarily harsh but the teams have already posted a picture and a brief summary of the bot. It's just being gracious not to nominate yourself. Back in the Revolutionary days it was customary to vote for your opponent instead of yourself. Even today in sports polls coaches don't vote there own team number 1.

soezgg 23-02-2003 20:28

yeah, sevisehda, i get jokes too.

Chris 23-02-2003 23:59

As for some of the negativity happening on these forums, I started this thread with the absolute opposite idea in mind. This thread is supposed to be about other teams you want to see. Teams who always produce quality stuff but maybe get swallowed up with all the big name teams. Every one of the teams I named came right to my mind when I think of good teams.
So lets talk more about other teams and less about ourselves.

I usually post the pics from my team (237) but I have no pics this year cause my digi-cam died!! I'll try to find one and post it eventually. If my teammates let me that is!! :D

Jay Lundy 24-02-2003 04:46

I'm not sure if we will be posting a picture or not. I wasn't the one taking all the pictures so I don't have any.

I am very happy with how our robot turned out this year, though I'm not sure any pictures of it would be particularly impressive. So don't expect anything like Truck Town's robot out of us.

I'm still waiting to see what Gunn has come up with this year. They were supposed to come up and test their robot on our field but they never showed up!

Ash 25-02-2003 17:34

hehe

Well, as for why we ahvent posted pictures of our VERY pink robot, we, uh, are sorta lazy...:D

Its not unheard of for teams to copy another teams design or make something similar to it.

every year something like this happens. thinking back in 2001 after beaty had its amazing off the ramp stacker alot of teams showed up to later regionals with strikingly similar designs. Last year alot of teams (461 included) added tape measures for last minute scoring options after the first regional.

I know our team posted pictures but there are a few parts that we didn't want to give away just yet to keep them a surprise and slow other teams down in making similar devices.

Now is this in the spirit of first? Is it gracious professionalism to not share information about your prized device? Or is it not in the spirit of first to copy another robots design?

And i do think that teams probably look at another teams robot just in pictures and say 'what can we do to beat them'

I know that when our team saw Truck Town Thunders bot we all went "ohh crap what can we do to still go under the bar?" and when we saw some of the wall robots which can take over the top of the ramp we said 'can we push them off? what can we do to minimize their ability to dominate'

Our team has already begun scouting other teams much of which is based on pictures posted online and information posted here. I know alot of other teams scout before competitions too. So yah there are totaly reasons why teams wouldn't post pictures.

Not to say that it isn't still fun to look at other peoples bots and its not fun to toot your own horn a bit and post your bot and say WOW LOOK AT THIS THING I SPENT 6 WEEKS OF MY LIFE ON.

Okay i ranted long enough thats my $0.02.

I heard that Gunn didn't go up to Ames for the same reason 258 didn't; because we never received confirmation that we could get past security at the gate. As for GRT, they've got an interesting robot to say the least. Good drivetrain, and custom circuit board. I'm not sure how successful the rest of their robot will be, but it'll be a fun compeditor/ally at SVR for sure. See you in a few weeks Jay.

<edit>
Oh. I'll tell Jim to post a couple more visible photos sometime soon.

<edit#2>
To stick with the thread's theme...
I'm looking forward to seeing 71, 111 (I'm actually desperate to see Wildstang), 116, 236, 254, 330, and 383.

I'm curious: is there any particular reason you're desperate to see our robot? Are you anticipating a certain design or strategy from us?

Stang puts out quality robots, year after year...
I use you guys as a benchmark for quality.
Plus... you always have something cool.

That's why I can't wait to see it!

Plus, I'm curious what the 111 idea of the winning strategy is...

Rook 26-02-2003 00:27

We have a strategy meeting tomorrow night, and I will ask if it's OK for me to post a pic or two. Our robot design is purely offensive. It's not a King of the Hill type thing, but moreso a KOH-Killer. There's not much a team can do to prepare for us until they've seen us play.

I don't think this forum and the pictures are damaging to the teams that post pics. It's not nearly as bad as the rest of FIRST being able to watch complete matches of earlier regionals, and that's not even that damaging.

Kris Verdeyen 26-02-2003 09:41

Ok I think a few teams that are flying low under the radar are the following(Yes this is going to be biased due to me competing in the Northeast)
7 (Impressive robot last year beat us in Jersey and in Florida)
25
56
95
131
151
157(Teams from Mass get no respect)
173(Ok there the champions but nobody has mentioned them yet why I have no idea)
175
176
190(See Aztechs)
293???? I'm going for Spike here
303
885(very good young team and hey we had alumni that helped them of course I'm going to list them)

I don't have a particular design/strategy in mind for your robot. I'm excited to see your robot because for as long as I've been involved in FIRST (2000+), I've always been in awe of how your team deals with the given tasks each year. I personally think that 111's robot was the best robot of last season.

Many of the robots you listed above, have already been released... including 173... no one is talking about them, because we already know what they do. Same with 190.

ColleenShaver 26-02-2003 12:43

Yeah- we've already posted some pics from 190... you can see them at:
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...threadid=18317

There is also a link in that thread to some videos of our robot in 'action'

Jason Rudolph 26-02-2003 15:19

Quite a few of those teams do have pictures up, just go to firstrobotics.net and check out the 2003 robot gallery. There are already 154 robots there, which is quite good in comparison to the previous years seeing as how we only shipped the robots last week! Don't complain so much guys, most teams don't put out a picture of their robot for one reason or another; a majority of the pictures we end up with come from pictures that people like me take at competitions and post them. Just be patient, and whatever we get, be happy with.

Forsaken85 26-02-2003 21:07

you crazy?

What about team 303. Does eveyone not want to see what we will be doing and what our robot will be doing. Come on remember what happened at the nationals last year, record of 11 and 2. no one else had that one ouch. Anyway also the off season ones aswell so what about us. Unfortuneatly no one will be able to see what the robot looks like till Annapolis but we might post pics you never know. Hope to see what everyones can do. Lets go 303.

Steve W 26-02-2003 22:13

We have some server problems but you can see our robot at the following link from media day(1 week before ship). Other robots also seen. Ours has the red light.

... Yea, I'll see what I can do, My team is hell bent on not releasing anything on our robot till people see it at BAE Regional, I honestly dont feel this way, I'll see if I can get some pics. Plus were not that good this year...

Ed Crammond 27-02-2003 11:59

So yah there are totaly reasons why teams wouldn't post pictures.
I understand. I'm not trying to be negative or somehow spiteful that other teams havent posted pictures, im just genuinely interested in other teams designs. As are many others who are posting here.

Maybe teams are fearful of copying their designs, but thats a shows that its a great idea in the first place.

Some teams will have robots that have mechanisms that are just too hard to copy from photos, others will have simpler ones that have the potential to be copied on the day of the competition - like the tape measures.

Although I'm still not convinced of the protectionist arguement, i do accept that teams may wish to keep their designs away from prying eyes.

Todd Derbyshire 27-02-2003 13:27

I totally agree in not posting pictures of robots until after the first Regional. Too much can be copied from a robot with a picture out. For example last year the tether. After Jersey we had dozens of people asking us how we built our tether. By the time CT rolled around everyone had a tether and they pretty much were copies from other robots. So due to this and all of the secrets our robot has Team 88 never has and never will give out any info on the bot previous to a Regional.(We don't even take it to mini-comps!!) Oh and my list of teams are people to watch out for I don't care if I see pics of them or not I'm just saying these are the more underappreciated teams in FIRST that don't get credit when it is due to them. I have a feeling that my list of teams will prove me right at the Manchester Regional in a week.

Gee Todd- so secretive. Team 25 typically waits until the last few days to show what we built but we like to share our ideas with the other teams. If a team can make a major modification in the pits in mid season then more power to them. I leave the legality of it up to the FIRST judges. Isn't imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

BTW- the TJ2 tether last year was a neat idea- simple and effective (and fun to watch unroll!). Thanks for the addition of 25 to your list. Our machine is a beauty and both fast and powerful. Hopefully it will play the way we plan. We'll see at Annapolis.

See you folks at Rutgers!!

Rook 27-02-2003 14:54

This is the first year I have come to these forums. I regret missing the past two years. A lot of fun conversation goes on here.

My take on posting pictures is... I don't think it's too harmful after the robot ships if you post a pic or two. If you are worried that you may give away some secret, simply don't post a pic of your robot from that angle or in the act of doing the secret thing. You don't have to go in to all kinds of details about what your wheels are made of, or what you have hiding under the hood.

Still I don't think it's bad if a team doesn't want to post a pic. It's like waiting for Christmas day. If you open all the presents early, then you got nothing to be excited about.

I don't actively seek other team websites to see what they've posted. I get enough off this forum.

Actually I look forward to seeing your bot, and Wildstangs. I've always been impressed with Wildstang.

As for the Mini-comps comment, I'll probably get beat for this, but we have competed in them before. Exactly once. and that was because that was the only time we were finished before the deadline.

We ususally ship the robot with the paint still drying.

18voltMilwauke 28-02-2003 20:33

What about team 9 the roboriders. We saw team 111 robots at there invitational now i dont know if that was there robot or not but it was nice.

Venkatesh 28-02-2003 21:41

Team 1

I want to see team 1's robot. It has to be cool being team number 1. And also team 42. Their robot is the answer to everything. :]

we cant take pix of our bot

i would love to post pix of Team 19's bot.. but.. we cant.. due to the fact that this year it has a built in cloaking device.. and well.. sad to say.. our programming team (GOYA!!!!!!) messed up and lost our robot.. its wandering around our high school right now.. we are still looking for it...

Best Regards,

It looks like you fall down to start the match huh? Do you find that helps you get to the ramp quicker? How much time does it take you? That thing looks quite ferocious, great work. See you at UTC.

Due to the fact that i live in the hometown of one of 267's schools (Coral Springs, FL) I have a pic from the paper of their bot, so it is getting around, of course, im not entirely sure where it is, looks interesting tho

JMastahFlex19 05-03-2003 12:41

that is correct

yes.. that is correct.. we do fall down.. :)

and we cant really release our times as of right now.. you'll have to wait and see at the regional :)
