What in the heck are those wheelie lookin' thingies sticking up on the side of the robot?

maybe some sort of booster drive that drops down when needed?

Our Thunder Bot has two speeds that are shifted "on-the-fly" using pneumatics. We can shift "seemlessly" even while the robot is under load. In the picture, we are in low gear and able to push about 400 lb.

just out of curiousity, is that metal on your big back wheels?

that's probably not metal - they look like zip ties to me (and as long as they settled into grooves or something and not actually touching the floor it is perfectly legal)
