impaired sight

how are your operators able to see the robot on the other side of the field when boxes are up. We have a low robot and have trouble seeing it on the other side of the field when boxes are in the way. I was thinking about a camera but it seems that that was deemed ilegal. Maybe flags? HAs anyone thought about this or are your auto modes perfected enough to not have to worry about this?

Daniel Brim 25-02-2003 19:34

Right now we are hoping our autonomus is good enough, otherwise we just drive blind :-)

Josh Hambright 25-02-2003 19:46

when the big stacks are up yes that would be a problem for most any driver....

one of our backup drivers is just barely 4 SU's high...so i am predicting that tall drivers will have an advantage...atleast thats what i kept telling the advisors who were picking the drivers:)

Maybe thats why are drivers are both over 6' tall...

my team was thinking about making some school flag that we could put on top our robot so we could see it easily... then a teacher heard the idea, went out, and bought a retractable antenna.... so now we have a retractable antenna to put on our robot

by the team it gets up the automode will be half over, and we probably don't need it, but hey, it looks cool, and thats all that matters.:]

I have heard a good method can be using the big screen that is showing the match if you cannot see, if it's showing your bot.

Eric Bareiss 25-02-2003 20:25

I wouldn't count on the screen this year. FIRST said that some of the events are being "streamlined" which means no big screen. But that's only for some events.

Search, there is a thread about this.

does anyone have any clever ideas? how about one of those rc hovercrafts witha camera

Gadget470 25-02-2003 20:32

That wouldn't be allowed anyway. No digital imaging is allowed to your driver station. We may have a plan if I can get it built

evulish 25-02-2003 20:35

Make your own big screen. DV Cam -> laptop - > projector -> bed-sheet. :D

Ohh...and a flag like that may be considered illegal. It's not exactly a "nonfunctional" decoration.

do you think that boxes will all be knocked down in auto mode, and worrying about this would be pointless. I was just thinking that one of the reasons I could not see the bot was because at the scrimmage wood was used as the walls of the ramp

edomus 25-02-2003 20:38

if the flag grows it would be legal. it would start in the legal hight and be spring loaded for the bar

Austin 25-02-2003 20:44

Well, it may be VERY hard. But there are small gaps between the totes. So if all else fails...i guess you could try to use your "Telescopic Macrovision" to know where your robot is. lol :D

....or....shhhh....don't tell anyone....install a spy cam on your robot that sends a radio signal to a heads' up display discreetly mounted on your oi....shhh....don' t tell anyone...hehe

edomus 25-02-2003 20:49

I like that idea.:]

evulish 25-02-2003 21:08

OR...you just watch for your bright rotating light. Hehe. I really don't see it as that big of a deal. You should have a general idea of where you are...you don't really need precise movements if you're just going to go knock over all the bins. If all else fails, just sit and wait for someone else to knock it over. :P
