that's good to hear... we gave away excess Mardi Gras beads in St. Louis that were left over from a French Club party at our high school.

They flew out of our hands, and kids were begging for them by Friday afternoon. We ended up getting rid of a couple hundred.

Which sparks another question - girls with jewelry?

I am saying a big no-no. Necklaces and bracelets get caught (I'm talking like expensive stuff, not some plastic beads), but I wear two rings that I never take off. Also, I don't know if hanging earrings would be any good, but most of mine are small hoops that I can't take out (I just had a lot of piercings done).

What do you guys think?

Jeff_Rice 26-03-2003 12:57

A myriad of topics.

Jewelry + FIRST = BAD!

I agree with AmandaBean. We are dealing with moving parts and electricity here. For example, necklaces could choke you if they got tangled in a motor. And if you are wearing metal bracelets or a metal watch, current can arc through it and make it very hot.

Anyway, on the subject of acting dumb, don't. Be yourself. I have to deal with girls acting dumb every day at school. They seem to think it fashionable. I don't. I will be very happy if I get to talk with a girl who at least respects herself. Besides, I will talk at length about my- I mean our- robot to anyone who so much as glances at it.

Flirting- it is great, but don't do it to try and get information. That is once again self degrading.

And as for fashion? I would suggest jeans + hickory shirt or team shirt. Spend as much or as little time as you want on your appearance, but remember, you will be dealing with grease and stuff like that, so I wouldn't suggest taking too long.

I like smart girls, and I am sure there are many other guys who agree with me.

Katie Reynolds 26-03-2003 13:40

The only jewelry I ever wear to competitions is my celtic knot ring (which I hardly ever take off) and maybe an extra hairtie around my wrist! ;) Otherwise things just get in the way. If I get a lanyard or mardi-gras beads from a team, I'll wear them ... other than that, nothing around my neck.

angier314 26-03-2003 15:37

i have long nails too. i dont do much but be careful. when they brake yah they hurt but it not going to kill me they grow back anyways. once at robotics i broke my nail when it was really long and it started to bleed, i just showed the guys and laughed about it. you can buy a certain kind of nail polish that helps you grow strong nails that is about all.

Josh Hambright 26-03-2003 17:04

I wear more jewlery at competitions and in the shop then most all of the girls on my team... I have all of my bracelets and random necklaces and such.

The advisors yelled at me once cuz they said my bracelets were dangerous...but the last time i took them off i broke 2 so i refuse to take them off anymore.

Hee hee! Do you also decorate your jeans and shirts with random pieces of duct tape? I heard that metal scraps are good for your skin also. As for everybody, I do believe a general first uniform should be issued and a general makeup kit with instructions. :ahh:

utishpenguin 28-03-2003 02:08

hmmmm

duct tape cloaks

Elgin Clock 28-03-2003 12:14

Duct Tape Cloaks??? no no no... Search on ChiefDelphi for Duct Tape Kilts... Now that's where it's at!!

There was a lot of talk about that last year for Nationals!

Amanda M 28-03-2003 12:22

Ah! The power of Duct Tape! hahaha! I made duct tape pants for Nationals this year. To-night I am making my friend a skirt to wear. It will be awesome! haha! If you want to sugn them, look me up!

utishpenguin 30-03-2003 13:31

nice...

duct tape pants..... awesome.... sometimes i cant stand the smell of duct tape... any counter methods?

Alaina 30-03-2003 17:40

There was a team at SVR with duct tape vests. I think they were from Alaska.

haha, for some reason I juss imaginged having the flow chart from the manual in wtih that kit:

1."Could said necklace be caught in a transmission?" Yes/no. If yes, go to question 2a, If no go to question 2a....

lol..yeah...

heh, and motor grease does look great anywhere! (At least to me ;))

A. Snodgrass 05-04-2003 21:15

Elgin: that same group was the ones who were trying to get me to wear a kimono. I remember them!

lol!! hm, you'd have loved the way i looked today then.... between random grease stains and code red, i'm pretty splattered

Amanda Morrison 06-04-2003 13:29

Duct tape is a great idea at FIRST competitions, although I did not see a whole lot at the West Michigan Regional. I kind of missed teams like 648 and their duct- and electrical-taped ninjas.

Considering this year's kit, you kids would have to be messing around with more than just motors for grease - the van door motor, drills, etc. don't have any grease, just the Fisher Price, and that's clear!

Elyse Holguin 06-04-2003 18:41

::shudders at the thought of our cursed fisher-price motor, and the robodawg's fisherprice motor that was ripped apart in semifinals (they got it changed before the finals)::

the fisher price motors supply enough light orangy yellow grease. trust me.

as for the beaded necklaces, they were cute, but i didn't wear them, even those get in the way when you're in the pits, the human players were wwearing them, but they gave them to me during our matches, and i ended up making another teammate hold them. they were a very cute idea, but not practical. same goes for those leis. the only thing i wore were a pair of screwback earrings that i can't ever take off, and they're studs so they don't exactly get in the way, and two rings, but i think i'm leaving one of those at home for nats for fear of death if it gets damaged or lost!

but the duct tape.... we cover part of our team shirts with either duct tape or a button... the school city's administration put something onto our shirts without notifying us and we REALLY dislike it, enough so that the engineers and parents designed and ordered their own shirts. (if you really wanna know i'll show you it @ nats)

Josh Hambright 07-04-2003 09:02

Weren't you guys told not to wear your new shirts to competitions or something like that?

I saw them and i was pretty flabbergasted and can understand why the engineers wont wear them.

The grease on the motors isn't that bad! When it gets on your hands its usualy clear...unless you get the whole GLOB of it.

OHH! I came up with a new tip over during the regionals this year... I dont know is anyone else is a dork and still wears their SME cards but i do...and my old team IDs...and a few buttons from a select teams i really like or that i admire...and a las gorilas bannan i have had since we won Ford Sweet Repeat with them a couple years ago.... anyways i kept getting it stuck in stuff when i would bend over so just throw it under your shirt and it keeps it outa the way! Seems simple but it took me awhile to figure this one out!

Amanda Morrison 07-04-2003 15:03

Haha Josh.

I was so sad they didn't give out SME cards this year. I still have mine from last year, and the tons of ID's that were made for us. I'm still one of the only Team Hammond members/alumni to have their very own IRI Zone Zeal Team Hammond ID.

no, just the engineers were told not to wear them, we have to, since pepsi won't pay to give us new shirts. but enh, we cover them up, we don't like them, i might just end up wearing last years... oh wait... those things are HUGE! so... gr. yeah, i guess i'll deal with it...

Go sigmaC@T button! juss about the right size to cover it up (at least i thought so...heh)

Elyse Holguin 07-04-2003 22:26

yeah! that did work well. however, if i wanted to cover the entire sleeve, there's always the motown livewires button i have, those things are HUGE!!

utishpenguin 07-04-2003 22:54

mmm

ever try out different kinds of ties and clips?

Josh Hambright 08-04-2003 09:26

Just take a sharpie and draw a smiley face where the offensive stuff is.

That way you take care of business and you make sure that your not offending anyone! AND IT MAKES THE WORLD A HAPPIER PLACE!

Sorry i'm in an excessivly good mood due to the fact i only have 22 hours till i leave for houston!

Amanda Morrison 08-04-2003 13:20

What we should do on this thread: give Josh tips on his mohawk. I still say you should have grown a trihawk... kinda like Luis and RUFIOOOOOOOOOO!

I've yet to see a girl with really noticeable hair... maybe the girl I met last year on Holland Christian with the spikes, but she's really the only one who stands out.

Josh Hambright 08-04-2003 13:28

there was a girl in cleveland with sorta a mohawk...

helen on our team put green in her hair but she's a wuss and used temp dye...so now it looks moldy!

Dude trihawks...omg i could never...its enough work dealing with 1 let alone 3!!!!

I have to decide tonight if it shall stay gold or turn magicly either green or purple before houston!!! Tonight is my last change to dye it!

Amanda Morrison 08-04-2003 14:47

I told Chris to have you keep it gold but add some thick black chunky stripes, ala 461 colors. that, and get some clothespins, color them yellow and black, and put those in there. I think that would look awesome!

I just put my hair up with a clip before comps... it's way too much work to do anything else. That, and I had to be up first to wake up the kids, so I didn't really leave myself much time. :(

utishpenguin 08-04-2003 20:14

hmmm

hahah or i will try my hardest to wipe it off!

Josh Hambright 09-04-2003 00:14

ohh man i wish i woulda read the black and gold message earlier today...
i coulda wipped out the spray paint and made some black and gold clothes pins for the mohawk....

Bah.

Theres always IRI

Elyse Holguin 09-04-2003 00:23

i'm redoing the bright red i had in chicago with manic panic at the hotel... they're gonna kick me for dripping red on towels... but oh well, they didn't do anthing to us in michigan when we had blue all over the place from doing everyone's hair.... yeah.... hmmm... i think a sharpie would work.... then again, i might get my head chewed off like last year for altering a uniform. hahahaha

To me, the fashion at the regionals aren't about being pretty, it is all about team spirit and creativity. Whether it is dying you hair orange or, LOL, wearing yellow and orange board shorts to match the orange shirt. A team mate did it. It looked, umm, great! LOL.:D

Elyse Holguin 17-04-2003 00:29

did anyone @ radisson see me walking around in 2 towels, pants, and a showercap while redying my hair, and quite possibly have a picture of it? there were a lotta ppl around, and that'd be the best who am i picture CD's ever seen! lemme know!

Elgin Clock 17-04-2003 17:16

Just be thankfull that you have a team setup that allows you to touch the color of your hair..

In our rules and bylaws of the team it says "No un-natural hair color is allowed during competitions..."

It really sucks to say the least!!!

really? wow, we're encouraged ... actually i think our advisers do it more then the kids

Amanda Morrison 17-04-2003 18:40

Is there any way that you can have that amended - possibly only for competitions?

A lot of mentors and advisors get into this to get as involved as the kids... Just look at Andy Baker's picture with Tim Railey, the picture Ken Leung has up, etc. Different colored hair at competitions is a little more crazy and a little more fun.

Nope not at all, the rule was written specifically for competitions...
Like I said, it sucks! Unfortunately our team tries to run itself as a business and that is "not acceptable" for a business like environment... :(

2) before you go to bed, try to get at least a general idea of what you might wanna wear the next day. even if you change your mind in the morning, for some reason, it still takes less time than just tryin to decide right off the bat in the morning. again, this also leaves you more time for make-up.

3) do your hair up in a ponytail or braid or something. 'cuz first of all, it won't get caught in anything if you're workin in the pits. and second of all, hair up is less likely to get knotted up or messed up bad.

4) go easy on the make-up. just do cover-up, mascara, and lipgloss. if you wanna put on a bit of eyeshadow, go for it. but remember, guys are gonna be more worried about the bots than yer looks during the competitions (so save your great make-up for later) plus, the more make-up you put on, the more chance of getting it messed up there is.

oh yeah...and always, always remember to put on deoderant. Nobody wants to sit next to a deoderant-less person who's been sweatin all day.;)

The girls on my team don't have to worry about what were gonna wear cause it's planned out for us already.

Re: Girls: What beauty tips do you give to other girls for Competions?

Oh Yeah here's anohter tip. I've never been to a competiton before but I did this when I went on trips in Juinor High. Make a list of the things that your going to bring, so you won't froget them while you're packing. At least that's what I'm gonna do anyways.

A team trying to pass itself off as a business? I could see how a FIRST Robotics team could be a business trying to get money through sponsorship, and fundraising, but that is about it. It is not like your a company that builds or even sells robots for the rich and famous. I guess you need a more "business" like approach for convincing them about the hair color changing rule. Just say that it would be easier to appeal to your target audience (potential sponsors, students, and parents/mentors) by changing the color of your hair for competitions. Just imagine... teenage geeks with crazy hair color having the time of thier life at a robotics competition. Not only are they having fun, but they are learning in a safe, yet educational environment. This organization helps students take what they are learning from school, and apply it in a real world setting. So on and so forth. Also mention that coloring your hair will boost team spirit, and moral. This may help your team win a couple matches. I would keep on pursuing this, and discuss this further with your team's "big kahuna." After all, guys have to wake up really early before competition and comb there hair, in order to look dead sexy for competition. Coloring it, would instantly guarantee all robotic's chicks to hook up with you. And now, I think I'm pushing my luck. :p

As for beauty tips for girls from a guy's point of view...

Rumor has it that girls who dye there hair PINK will instantely look hotter. Period. Well that is my opinion anyways...

Zimee 02-03-2004 12:51

Re: Girls: What beauty tips do you give to other girls for Competions?

I dunno about pink hair, but, as I discovered this weekend, if you're going to use temporary green hair dye, don't wear a black tshirt... Oh, and don't fall asleep, that stuff is pretty manky on pillowcases.

The only other suggestion I can make (though I think this goes without saying) is keep clean. Feel free to wash your face if you have time to run to the bathroom. Also, those little grease papers are amazing. It may take a couple sheets to get off all the sweat, but you'll feel much better because of it. ...wow, I just sounded like such a bimbo...
