Torches for movie?

Anyone know a good way to make a torch or a realistic looking torch for a movie? We're shooting a movie for lit class, and we need a good economical way to make classic handheld torches.

Oh, and it needs to be safe.

Birch bark torches are out-- not enough birch trees in the area to be able to find them being cut down.

Wrap a kerosine soaked rag around a stick and LIGHT IT UP.

roll of toliet paper, doused in white gas or something of the like, on a metal pole. my boy scout troop uses these for a "burning of the greens" (we're sponsered by a church) every january. works wonders :).
