The Obscure Old Show Thread

Alright people let's get to remembering. Whenever a group starts to talk about old shows in real life the conversation just takes off on its own, so here we go.

I'm talking shows from the past, elementary school and earlier, before kindergarten even, all those obscure ones that you don't remember until someone mentions something about it.

The Popples - they were like possums that roll up into soccer balls. I don't remember much more than that about them, but my brother had one.

The Wuzzles - strange animals that were combinations of 2 animals in one. I just looked this one up recently. Bumblion and Moosle. Yeah! I sort of remember the show.

Today's Special - the one in the department store where the manequin came alive when he put on the hat, and there was the crazy security guard and that mouse.

Muppet Babies - I don't think I have to explain that one. Everyone loved Muppet Babies!

Weinerville - What a weird show that was. Mark Weiner and all his huge-head-little-body puppet people. Crazy! It wasn't on too long I remember.

Anyone else got any really old shows just dangling on the edge of their memory? Nickleodeon had a ton of them.

evulish 02-03-2003 22:45

Fraggle Rock.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The Smurfs (kids haven't even heard of that these days...ahh...my old IRC alias: Evul-Smurf :P)

There are others...

Brandon Martus 02-03-2003 23:51

Pinwheel.

WEINERVILLE!!!

THATS SOOOO GREAT...TOTALLY REMEMBER THAT SHOW!

Amanda Morrison 03-03-2003 12:10

Come now. It was all about Beakman's World, was it not?

Team238-aholic 03-03-2003 13:19

BEAKMANS WORLD!!!!! THATS AN EVEN BETTER SHOW!

Brm789 03-03-2003 15:34

Ok, I was an avid tv watcher when I was younger so here is the list.

The Sercert World Of Alex Mack: about a girl who had blonde hair and had some weird chemical get on her and was thus able to transform into a metallic silver liquid. She also had some special powers but I can't remember what.

Wishbone: I saw this not too long ago so it might not be that old. About a Jack Russel Terrior (that's a dog) whose name was wishbone. He used to "jump" into books or imagine atleast that he was in the story. Very Good show for the kiddies.

Space Cases: This was one of those Nick ones that only lasted a very short time. I don't remember the plot or anything save for the fact they were in space and one of the main characters had rainbow colored hair and was female. (does anyone remember this show??)

The Elephant Show: Ok, this I barely remember. All I know is the theme song. "Snicker-a-rickiedenk denk..snicker-a-rickie ado..I love you..I love you in morning and in the afternoon..I love in the evening and underneath the moon" I am not sure those are spelled correctly but you will just have to sound them out like I did. Hehe. There was even a dance, which I sorta remember.

Are You Afraid of the Dark: Scarey Kiddie Show that came on SNICK.

Speaking of SNICK, whatever happened to that?

The Orignal Double Dare, Carebears, My Little Pony, G.I. Joe, and Speed Racer also come to mind.

Team238-aholic 03-03-2003 17:26

SNICK is still on...it still shows All THat and some other random shows....

Watch yourself, Adam :P

I watched Pinwheel regularly.

DanL 03-03-2003 19:03

oh man...two come to mind just off the top of my head

Get Smart - the classic spy tv show!

Ren and Stimpy - It's loo-oog, it's looo-ooog, it's better than good it's great!

MBiddy 03-03-2003 19:17

Oh, I just thought of some more!

Square One - That old math show. I used to watch it before school in kindergarten.

DinoRiders - I don't ever remember actually watching it, but the idea is total genius. Let's make a show with dinosaurs, and give them ARMOR AND GUNS! YEAH!

Dinosausers - Only saw this a few times in Arizona. Alien dinosaurs. Weird.

Denver the Last Dinosaur - I think this was a series but I only saw the first episode/movie or something. Many times. I think it's on a tape somewhere in my house.

Wow, dinosaurs were popular back in the day.

sub-show... MathNet! (math-based dragnet spoof)

Ben Mitchell 03-03-2003 20:56

David the Gnome is still the best. Ever.

Brm789 04-03-2003 06:38

David the Knome kicked butt but do you remember who the fox was that he rode around on? Muhahaha..Swift. Like I said..avid tv watcher when I was younger.

I remember Doug when Doug was cool and was still in Junior High. I think Disney bought him now but he was with Nick.

The Orignal Power Rangers! Yeah, I'm old.

Full House, which I think is now in reruns, and Two Of a Kind.

I remember when you ahd to PAY *scary thought here* for Disney and Nick was just one channel.

Weren't those both sub shows of 321 Contact?

Oh and I got some for you all,
Pee Wee's Playhouse,
The Go Bots, Pound Puppies,
The Maxx- On mtv,
The MC Hammer cartoon with his talking magic shoes,
F-Troop, Lost in Space - the original show,
Kids Incorporated, Funhouse-Double Dare type kiddie game show,
You Can't do that on Television, Punky Brewster,
The Fall Guy

Ok I'm done for now. Those are just a few I used to watch regularly

edit: Ooh I got one more, "Romper Room"

FAKrogoth 04-03-2003 20:14

Not as old, but certainly forgotten: Earthworm Jim! (He's such a groovy guy . . .)

Of similar age, slightly more longevity, but still forgotten twice: The Tick (Very awesome show, both times. Sad both shows were cancelled)

Also a good show, but I think it's still on occasionally: Rocko's Modern Life. ("What are you doing?" "Watching you sleep -- you're weird.")

From way back in my childhood, I remember Gummy Bears (they drank juice and bounced around), Maya the Bee (I hated that show, yet never quite realized I didn't have to watch . . .), Fat Albert, and that one on Nick with "Picture Pages."

Who could forget Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and Bots Master?

And before my time: Mork and Mindy. I love Robin Williams acting.

John Bono 04-03-2003 21:15

Well, at least some of you have the idea. I beleive the word here is OBSCURE, thus my nominations: Samaurai Pizza Cats and Battletech.

Michael Murphy 05-03-2003 00:13

Samuri Pizza Cats-loved watching that before school.

...Transformers and their Hanna-Barbara copies the Go-Bots;

Dino-Riders, ExoSquad, both He-Man shows (the original and the one where he's in space) the Star Trek animated series

umm...VR Troopers, UltraMan with one of the Lawrence brothers (can't remember which)

And I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers Gummi Bears. I once spent a whole Sunday at work convincing people that it existed-ended up having to "sing" the theme song.

oh...Captain N, the two Star Wars cartoons with the Ewoks and the Droids...Stingray...Gargoyles

Every day at 11.

Take a TV break from 12->1. I think re-runs of Taxi were on..

1:00 pm : the A-Team

MacGuyver was on sometime in there too. I loved summer vacations and the quality daytime TV. :)

Koko Ed 05-03-2003 09:41

And Levar Burton of Star Trek Fame was on Reading Rainbow as a book dude as well!!

I thought of another one as well; Voltron!! Volton is exactly like power rangers but just animated. There wasn't enough budget or technology (ha) to make it real enough I guess!

Oh, and who can forget The Care Bears!! Yeah I had one.

And did anyone mention M.A.S.K. yet??

FAKrogoth 05-03-2003 21:57

Two comments on previously listed shows:
1. Reading Rainbow was a good show, until I entered second grade and they started showing it to us. After that, it was interminable until I was released to middle school. They just never covered any sci-fi. For that matter, they never showed any book with more than forty pages. I was reading those things to second graders when I was in kindergarten. When I was your age *goes off mumbling*

2. *returns to topic* Voltron was only like Power Rangers in that the 'bots linked up. There was much more plot to Voltron. I was a fan of PR, for about three months. I didn't have much patience for stupidity when I was eight.

As for a show that is like Power Rangers, I submit Thundercats. It had the same feel to it, similar characters, and similar roles. The only stylistic differences are in the relative ages of the heroes and Power Rangers' overuse of roboticitry. Oh, yeah, and Thundercats was actually watchable.

I must admit, I didn't.

Brm789 06-03-2003 11:03

Scruffy was not the dog's name. Bain was. The neice was Penny.

Scruff Macduff *or something simular* was the cartoon dog against drugs. Maybe that's why?

Take a bite out of crime!!!

Another obscure one that no one seems to remember, Pirates of Dark Water. A show about the crazy pirates that had to stay on the ship cause the "ocean" was made from some weird killer black ooze!

FAKrogoth 06-03-2003 19:39

Actually, Pirates of Dark Water isn't completely forgotten, it's still on Cartoon Network at some strange time.

Second, Inspector Gadget was never a very good show. It was too predictable, even when I was a child.

Third, Babylon 5 is neither obscure nor old. If it were, however, it would be a fantastic addition to this thread.

MBiddy 06-03-2003 20:34

I think the Inspector Gadget dog was named Brain, since he was smart.

Remember Gumby? That was surreal.
I remember tons of Warner Bros. cartoons too.

2 Stupid Dogs! That was crazy!

Anyone remember the Nintendo show?? It had Mario and Luigi and I think there was some cartoons too.. My memeory is fuzzy on that one.

I remember Nintendo cereal too. Did you know that the Nintendo cereal was the only cereal that was in a black colored box? It was actually two cereals, super mario and legend of zelda, leading the song on the commercial to state,
"Nintendo, it's two cereals in one".

Oh and while we're on the whole dog's name idea, in Fraggle Rock the dog's name was Sprocket.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about her dog. lol Punky Brewster aka Soleil Moon Frye, I had such a crush on her at the time. She's actually on Sabrina the teenage witch now and still looking good!! She doesn't wear two different color shoes on that show though! lol

Another show I remeber is the Sarturday morning cartoon Little Rosie. It was a junior version of Rosanne Barr.

You are probably not thinking of the show "Super Mario Bros. 3"

You speak of the Super Mario Bros Show. I have vague memories of it, but "Do the Mario!" will be forever etched into my brain. The show featured both Zelda and Mario Bros. cartoons and came out along with the cereals. I could get you a link to the cereal's commercial if you want it.

Space Cases was pretty cool and is mostly forgotten. I remember when (Susie?) was replaced in the show by her imaginary friend. It didn't last long after that.

I remember a ton about Alex Mack, most of her friends, the evil plant people (the guy, the woman, and the driver of the truck), etc...
Her two special powers (which any kid would love to have) are (1) telekinesis and (2) the ability to make herself into goo that could still see at floor level and move around. That got her out of many-a-jam.

My show contribution? Oh, darn, I forget it now.

Oh, yeah! The adventures of Tin-Tin! a comic book series and good animated action show on Nick. That Scottish Terrier was so cool.

Rev. Lovejoy 11-03-2003 19:49

Does anyone remember the science show? Where they did different science experiments, it wasn't bill nye, it was something else, and they did little things that kids could do.

321 Contact came on right before Square One, and at the end of Square One they had Mathnet, which was the best show ever, except it was almost always a repeat. I can't say FIRST turned me onto math and science because it was most definately Square One.

What about Perfect Strangers? I loved Balky.

Brandon Martus will hear me on this one, I think - Captain Kangaroo.

And now that I think back, I was destined for FIRST - my favorite show, back in the VERY Dark Ages, was Small Wonder. The robot girl that lived with the normal family? And she slept in the closet, and wore that white and red pinafore?

I am SO old.

Can't say that I've ever seen it.

Anybody remember 'Out of this World'? The 1/2 alien girl who lived with her human mom, and talked to her dad at the end of each show. She could stop time by putting her two index fingers together, and start time by clapping.

When I discover Beakman's World I just couldn't stop watching it! Unfortunately here in Brazil just a few people knew about it but it helped me a lot to understand Science. Do you remember Lester?

It used to be on after school (here, at least... Chicago television is apparently way different from the rest of the country). I would run home just to make sure I didn't miss the beginning.

I know I posted about Beakman's World back in the beginning of this thread, but to maybe get this going again...
Has any show changed your life by watching it? I can think of two examples.

1. I was watching Beakman's World one morning about why your stomach gargles when you are hungry, and the network interrupted it to introduce Desert Storm. Crazy, huh?

2. Watching 'Empty Nest' when I was around 11 or 12, they had Garth Brooks as a guest. The next day I went out an bought his first tape (ha! before CD's were even around!), and it's been history ever since.

She could also unfreeze people by touching them, after time was frozen. She talked to her dad through a crystal (probably plastic) cube, on a small table, in her room.

I remember one of the characters' alter egos was Mosquito Man, or something like that. Rather funny. This brings back a lot of memories, too.

Fraggle Rock, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Smurfs were all some of my absolute favorites. And Shirah and He-man. And Mighty Mouse. You Can't Say That on Television. Ch-ch-ch-chip and Dale!! Rescue Rangers...hehehe wow I'm a dork...what else...I definitely was a fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles though...big time fan!! Mork and Mindy, Get Smart (did anyone else ever watch that show?? It was so good!! With the detective...on Nickelodeon at night...) the one in like the 60's...with the soon-to-be Marilyn Manson...he played like Paul or something, and the main character had a girlfriend who was really smart...grrr...can't think of it...The Wonder Years!! That's it...sorry. Ducktales, with Hewey, Dewey, and Louie (sp?), and of course Donald Duck!! hehehe Umm...there are others but I forget them...I miss those shows!!

Now I thoroughly enjoy Spongebob, Family Guy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Simpsons, Futurama...the good ones:)
