A famous qoute that means something to you

Hey guys share a quote that is important to you. Like mine is from civil war general Robert E. Lee.

"Alone we fall..
Together we shall prevail"

Or maybe this one from FDR

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself"

Or maybe JFK's famous speech

"Don't ask what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country"

Or maybe the oldie but goodie

"There is no I in team"

I will let you guys and girls out there tell me your favorite quote.

I have an entire speech....

“What General Weygand has called the Battle of France is over. The Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour."”

- Prime Minister Winston Churchill
House of Commons, 18th June 1940

Jack Handey favorites:

"Is there anything more beautiful than a beautiful, beautiful flamingo, flying across in front of a beautiful sunset? And he's carrying a beautiful rose in his beak, and also he's carrying a very beautiful painting with his feet. And also, you're drunk."

"In weightlifting, I don't think sudden, uncontrolled urination should automatically disqualify you."

"I wish a robot would get elected President. That way, when he came to town, we could all take a shot at him and not feel too bad."

"Sometimes when I feel like killing someone, I do a little trick to calm myself down. I'll go over to the person's house and ring the doorbell. When the person comes to the door, I'm gone, but you know what I've left on the porch? A jack-o-lantern with a knife in the side of its head with a note that says "You." After that, I usually feel a lot better, and no harm done."

"If I ever opened a trampoline store, I don't think I'd call it Trampo- Land, because you might think it was a store for tramps, which is not the impression we are trying to convey with our store. On the other hand, we would not prohibit tramps from browsing, or testing the trampolines, unless a tramp's gyrations seemed to be getting out of control."

"If you saw two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked dolphins the most? I'd say Flippy, wouldn't you? You'd be wrong though. It's Hambone."

"I bet the main reason that police keep people away from a plane crash is they don't want anybody walking in and lying down in the crash stuff, then when somebody comes up act like they just woke up and go, "What was that?!""

"When you go for a job interview, I think a good thing to ask is if they ever press charges."

"One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my little nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. "Oh, no," I said, "Disneyland burned down." He cried and cried, but I think that deep down, he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late."

"I bet for an Indian, shooting an old fat pioneer woman in the back with an arrow, and she fires her shotgun into the ground as she falls over, is like to top thing you can do."

Firewolf 07-03-2003 17:03

a serious post.... ah!

"Seek not the depths of your knowledge
With a staff or sounding line
For self is a sea boundless and measureless
and the soul walks all paths."
~Kahlil Gibran

I picked this as my sr. quote. 'Why?', this post asks would this mean something to me. well, as time goes on, and hardships come and go, you see your self facing so many new challenges that you would think you would never accomplish, you begain to doubt what you can do.
And for one thing the whole time I had been looking for a sr. quote, or trying to make one up, they kept coming out cynical; sarcastic; apathetic; and pessimistic (really? ) But when I came across this I paused and thought (:ahh: yes, it happens). I'm always 'preaching' to people how you should never limit your self, or doubt what you can do, there is so much out there, and so much potential in people, you should never limit yourself.

Go for things, push the limits in yourself, see how far you can go,
and see how exhilarating it will be.

'and the soul walks all paths.' ? well, I'm rather one of a romantic (lit. term) and that line is rather fascinating, that you can try so much, and there are no boundaries, that even your soul wanders upon every possibility.

((OK, i tried to make it serious ... sorry if i failed and many times i said 'you' i also meant it as a reference to myself, but as i said, i mean it to everyone, for Kahlil Gibran's words where to everyone. And this is just the way I see it, you can take it as something else.))

I like the quote I found in a "new age" store.

I bought the bumper sticker it was on just to put somewhere I can look at it always.

It says,

Honor the past
Live the present
Create the future

It rings true to me for multiple reasons. I study my family's genealogy and am always finding new things that ancestors have done that are interesting. As for the present, I just try to live one day at a time. But, I do realize that you do have to create your own future and that the past, present future cycle will start all over again someday - or sometime.

Time is a true mystery.

There's a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17. "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you." I been sayin' that s**t for years. And if you ever heard it, it meant your *ss. I never really questioned what it meant. I thought it was just a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherf***er 'fore you popped a cap in his *ss. But I saw some s**t this mornin' made me think twice. Now I'm thinkin', it could mean you're the evil man. And I'm the righteous man. And Mr. .45 here, he's the shepherd protecting my righteous *ss in the valley of darkness. Or it could be you're the righteous man and I'm the shepherd and it's the world that's evil and selfish. I'd like that. But that s**t ain't the truth. The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin'. I'm tryin' real hard to be a shepherd.

I'd like to paraphrase a quote: Play every match like it were your last, because one day it will be.

Here's a fun one: Frisbeetyrianism: the belief that when you die, your soul flys up and gets stuck on the roof.

And of course, the one in my sig: the third verse of my school song, and it only took me four years to get it to sink in.

I kinda like this one:

'Remember Maine, To Hell With Spaine' - American chant before or after WWII (forgot which). I like it because it rhymes ;) But for real, it actually works now to...but now it'd be:

'Remember us, to hell with war' - just because i hate war.

And a quote from Eminem's song: "White America":

'The women and men who have broke their necks for the freedom of speech the United States government has sworn to uphold.' - This is because of the many things told on T.V. One minute you hear one thing, and then you hear another...which makes me believe that the government is trying to keep some stuff above the microscope.

These quotes aren't inteded to cause flames. If you wish to though, PM me.

And 1 more before I leave: 'Guns don't kill people, people kill people' - I'm not exactly sure who said this.

This is a very good quote, Libby. It all depends on what the interpretation of winning is. It is also ironic, because winning means so many things.

Winning is working through tough times to find success. Winning is seeing a student go from a person who would rather cheat to a person who defends values and principle. Winning is knowing that you did the best you could possible give. Winning is receiving a "thank you" from a parent who knows that you made a difference in their kid's life.

FIRST *is* about winning, and it has made many of us winners... I am glad to be a part of it.

As you can see, I am a "glass half-full" kind of guy. Optimism is contagious.

Andy B.

"Play to win or don't play at all, but if you lose, take it graciously."

That's a saying heard often around these parts within FIRST teams.
