St Louis Notes
Here is a quick update from the St. Louis Regional:
(I am currently at the team party, at the St. Louis Science center) Robots at St. Louis are running pretty well. There are alot of first and second year teams, but many look like seasoned vets. One of the best highlights I saw was when two Indianapolis rookies got together in an alliance... team 1018 was on the HDPE, and they deployed a ramp behind them. Team 1024 rode up on their ramp and both were awarded 25 points. This round is surely a strong candidate for "play of the day"... and it was by 2 rookies! Baxter Bomb Squad looks strong as usual. They are very quick. Team 547 is consistently knocking over the entire stack in auto mode... very efficent and effective. There are many robots with huge honkin' wheels here... very nice. Team 868 is stacking pretty well... but they have a low seed. There are not too many stackers out there. The ones who are doing it seem to be getting better, but a few are giving up on the stacker mentality and simply pushing totes. I am mostly amazed by the quality of the teams with only 1-2 years of experience. They not only have robots that work well, but they also have canopy pits, overhead projectors, and they are sharing their scouting data. This is our first trip to St. Louis, and these teams over here have a good idea what GP means. As for team 45, we are doing well. Things are getting tweaked and we are having some fun. Hopefully, things will go well tomorrow too. later, Andy B. |
Thanks for the update! Do you like the St. Louis Science Center? I was there about 3 months ago, and it was pretty enjoyable. I bet I know which section you're in, too...
|
how much time does 547 do this in? sounds like fun, I know St. Louis was fun last year....
|
After seeing so much discussion on the Technocats' robot, how well did it perform?
|
From: http://www2.usfirst.org/2003comp/events/MO/
45 (with partners 447 and 1018) was knocked out in the quarter finals by 525, 356, and 16 the Kat's seeded 11th with a 108 average QP |
How about some details?
|
My own team (1067) didn't do that well, but I was rather proud when our robot, the programming recently modified by me to combat 547's entire stack push-over, but untested, reached a standoff at the top of the ramp that was literally a battle for the wall.
|
CIA!!!!
I'd like to thank both teams in our alliance for giving us a chance to be in the finals on our first year...We were elated! |

St. Louis Wrap-Up
Ok
I just got back from St. Louis about 30 minutes ago, overall I'm pretty pleased with what we figured out about our robot. Our arms work, woohoo!! after adding an extensive amount of latex tubing the arms go up and down with ease. This allows us to keep them up or down to let people on the ramp or to the other side. Our suction cups never got used. After dealing with other problems or just trying different things we never sucessfully attached to the HDPE. Our autonomous mode and our robot are being really screwy. After dieing in numerous matches we've come to the conclusion that we need to do something about our wiring and programming mode so we can be up and running at 100% for both Pittsburgh and Chicago in the upcoming weeks. All in all i'm pleased, we did come away with the Johnson & Johnson Sportsmanship Award, which we have never won before. I'de also like to thank the guys from 111 for the many suggestions on fixing our robot over the weekend, 547 and 171 for loaning us the many small things we forgot, and team 447 for picking us for the elimation matches (the CIA (Central Indiana Alliance - 447, 45, 1018) had a really good chance, but things just didnt go well). Next week, Pittsburgh, the week after that a break, and then Chicago. More updates to come! :D |
I just want to congratulate the Kats on a great regional performance. We had a blast strategizing with you guys in our qualifying match, and you had our teeth chattering before our quarterfinals match.

Re: St. Louis Wrap-Up
we (1028 -- the übergeeks) did quite well for a rookie (outside of our drive train busting a couple of times), but some of our alliances had some major problems. that's ok though...most of them got them fixed and went on to perform quite well. in one match they disabled us for no reason, claiming our light didn't work (even though i could clearly see it). oh well :)
the one team i really wish i could've seen perform was 1020. i don't think anyone could've moved them had they gotten on the ramp. if you went by their pit and looked on the underside of their wings, you'd know what i mean. Quote:

Anyway to clarify Clark's post: We had problems all day today. We would make it up the ramp anda then we would get a solid low battery light and a Basic Error on the OI. Around the time this happened, our pump came on right above the HDPE like normal. After much discussion on the way back from St Louis, we believe that the pump somehow contributed and the static electricity from the HDPE, which zapped our robot controller and pin 4 (The reset pin on the programming port) was zapped and reset the robot. Wildstang had a similar problem and many of their teammembers were there scouting this weekend and took the time to come and lend us a hand (thanks guys!) We sat there dead, sometimes we regained control, other times we didnt. This problem was most likely the cause of all of our other problems from the weekend, with exceptions from earlier on Friday. We have a list of ideas on how to fix it that will be ready to try next Thursday in Pittsburg. Now that I think about it, the times when we didnt have problems, we didnt make it to the top of the ramp. I'll have to check the log book on Monday to verify... |
Team 45...
I thought that you performed well. Like any good team, you took a problem, and continually worked to make it better. Many times did I run to your pit to find you all elbow-deep in tubing or random robot pieces. Congratulations on making it to eliminations, and I know you'll be back up and running for the next regional. I'll be looking forward to your performance in Evanston! |
Now that you mention it, we were getting odd low batt lights in St. Louis. I did not notice whether or not there was any correlation between seeing the low batt light and being on the HDPE. But other than that we had no problems with static on the HDPE.

St. Louis Notes
I'm a driver on Team 547 and I would like to commend all the teams at the St. Louis Regionals this year. Everyone was so awesome to us! I feel that every team gets better with age, and I know that we've come a long way in our first three years. Although we were paired up with rookie teams in all the qualifying matches but one, I don't feel that it was very much to our disadvantage, we got to help many rookie teams out, and that's what matters. We've also learned a lot from you guys about scouting, strategizing, and counter-strategizing, which also comes with age. Good job on your planning, building, scouting, and all the things that got you there like fundraising and mentorships. Good luck at nationals "ya'll"!

We also got a low batt. light alot the time.
We'd go over the ramp, then get to other side and get a low batt. light. It was really weird. We could still use on motor tho so we usually tried to use that to reach the top of the ramp. *jeremy |
To begin with I would like to say how happy I am that I was able to participate in the St. Louis regionals with so many fine teams. I really liked how involved many of the rookey teams were and how well some of them performed (way to go 1098)!! I'm even more happy that my team (525) was able to compete in the finals. Thank you all for a great time and the fun that we had. (especially teams 16 and 356).
However, I would like to bring up one downside that may have effected my teams performance in the quarterfinals. I do not want this to be miss-interpretated as poor sportsmanship or as a sore losser. But as most of the teams that were there know our autonomous mode was working great until someone figured out how to disrupt it. (whoever did this I congradulate, for we hadn't thought of this problem ourselves). By placing their boxes in front of us and mostly outside the scoring zone, the other alliances were able to deviate our intended path. Since I was the alliance captain I discussed this issue with the judges on it's legality. They had decided that this was fine as long as the tub was touching the scoring zone. However, if you look at the following link you will find that FIRST had ruled otherwise in a previous question: http://jive.ilearning.com/thread.jsp...ge=3256&q=6875 I do not want anyone to think that I believe that we should be given another chance nor that I'm saying that the other teams won unfairly. But that I would like to make sure that this was reconized and inforced at Nationals. Congradulations to all of the winning teams, you deserve what you recieved for your hard work. Thanks again for a great time. Good luck all at nationals!!:D |
547!!!!!!!!
we can usually knock down the boxes in our auto mode...and we can usually get it if a team doesn't beat us to it...so that's cool...the regional was good...and had a lot of fun
|
Gosh, no one has even mentioned the winners of the Chairman's Award...
Anyways, it was a great Regionals, and I had a blast. I was getting scared when they had reached the 15th Seed team for final's alliances (because 538 was 16th, and we hadn't even thought about who to choose) but the 15th seed team (sorry that i forgot your number) did a really good job selecting. Congratz guys... |
looking through 447's pictures, i saw this picture..
We would have won if it wasnt for our driver leaving the ramp at the last second. I thought i was going to kill him. As a lesson, don't go against your coaches wishes, and you might come out on top... |
The 16/525/356 alliance was eliminated somewhere in the tourney, too bad, we wanted to repeat last-years undefeated streak.
Anyways, this is about 356...They are incredible. They aren't too fast, but they're incredibly strong, but here comes the cool part. In our final match(even though we lost) 525 flipped over in a pushing match. 356 came along, and using their moveable wedge they flipped 525 back up!!! Greg Mills is a 7 year Bomb Squad veteran and said he has never seen a robot right their alliance partner!!! Those drivers are great. |
haha, that's funny, i was outside packing when that happened. That would have been great to see. I was shocked when i got back inside and saw yall in the pits. Ah well.
|
Wow. I'm from 356. Thanks for the compliment. It means even more coming from Baxter since you guys are one of the most respected teams out there. & I definately have to agree that our driver was amazing. Crazy kid kept insisting he did badly when we went to Applebees after the closing ceremonies. Right before he fell asleep at the table waiting for his food.
|
I just wanted to say thank you to both of 525's final team mates(16 and 356). We gave it our best and still cannot believe that 356 was able to tip us back over (awesome driver!!!).
I cannot stop thinking about this weekend because its only Sunday. We can always say what if our alliance was not on the top at the end of the match, but will not help to improve our teams. We should take this time to congradulate each other on an awesome weekend. Team 356 you were awesome! To 16 I would just like to say it was an honor to be paired up with BBS. I personally feel disappointment that we were not able to live up to Baxter's reputation. 525 hopes you do well at your future regionals and plan to see you at nationals!!! :) |
Yeah, I can only second my teammate's comments, since he beat me here. But 356, you guys were a great team, and seeing you guys pick us up was one of the coolest things that I've seen in 3 years of FIRST. The thing that beats it was probably that first time that 16 and us (525) went through our autonomous mode in the quarter finals...seeing them go flying up right in front of us was great.
16, I remember seeing you guys at St. Louis and being in complete awe of your robot. If someone had told me on Wednesday that we would be working with you guys in the finals, I would have laughed at them thinking we were good enough to work with you. It was an honor to work with you, and we appreciate what you did with us in the final rounds. I'm sorry that we weren't able to keep it going to the finals. 356, you were a great ally in the end, very dependable, happy to work with us on strategy. I have to admit that I didn't personally know who you were when my team decided to pick you, but when I saw your robot, I knew you were a good choice. I hope that my team has a chance to work with both of you in the future, and good luck at any further regionals. Oh, and after looking in the rules and on the official FIRST boards, the way that our opponents were placing the boxes right behind our robots (16 and 525) was illegal. The FIRST people clearly said the boxes have to be all the way within the scoring zone...but it only results in a minor penalty, so it wouldn't have done anything to them for that match. |
Wow. It's really cool to see people giving us (356) props. I called our driver & told him what you guys have been saying about us. He says thanks. Thanks for picking us to be your alliance partner. I started shaking when I heard you guys call our number. & during the elimination rounds I was so nervous I couldn't even chew gum without getting nauseous. It was definately a great experience. & I love the sign on the bottom of 525. That was pretty funny. Glad we could help you out. Kristin
|
All I can say is, the St. Louis Regional turned out to be great. We saw a lot more robot action towards the end, which was great. I think 356 flipping 525 back up was the highlight!!! That was great...... And Nyack was great to watch, cheering all the time. Thanks to all the other teams, making it such a great experience for us rookie teams!
|
525, this is Scott from team 935. We were the team that put the boxes in front and on the side of your robot and disrupted your autonomous mode. We ended up losing in the final round, but it was very, very fun. I have now realized the error in our ways and would like to say that we are sorry. I will talk to the rest of my team on Monday and tell them that we cannot do that at nationals. On another note, you're guys' robot was really good. Are you going to nat's? If so, I'll stop by and say hi. Thanks for pointing this out.
Scott |
Hey Scott, glad you had fun at St. Louis, and we will definetly see you at Nationals. Don't worry so much about the autonomous mode thing, it happens, we knew we had a bit of a weakness in that, we just didn't expect the judges to let them get put in the grey zone. To be honest, our team was surprised people didn't think of trying that on Friday. Anyway, you guys did well too, and I'll be sure to stop by your pit down in Houston.
|
i didnt think anyone would be able to get a box in a position to disrupt auton mode, but when i was it, i tipped my hat. I was in que for my last qualifieing round the first time it happened, or either the first time i saw it...

We actually had the Innovation FIRST guy come and mention the low battery light to us before one match, even though it was a fresh battery. Our controller was mounted on plywood, and we weren't doing anything strange to it...2 analog inputs, 5 PWM outputs, 2 digital outputs, power and radio. I don't really know why, but he told us about problems with the processors if the battery drops too low. Strange... I wonder if it was related at all to all the other equipment problems they were having at the beginning of the practice rounds.
|
I think the static was a large problem for most teams, and I wonder what FIRST will do about it during nats...
I wanted to send a HUGE THANKS not only to the teams that helped us out in the pits (probably all fifty-some of you...) but to Baxter Bomb Squad, #16. I think I need to bring something to your attention. One student of mine, a rookie named Matt Musial, was enthusiastic about FIRST, but a little unsure as to his role on the team. At first, he regarded it as a geek competition, and decided right off the bat that technical work on the team was just not his thing. After arriving in the pits on Thursday, Matt proceded to hand out give aways and cheer for other teams. All weekend, he walked around, just looking at other robots and talking and trading with team members. On Friday, Matt went to BBS's pit and asked a question about the robot. They ended up giving him a full demonstration of the robot, answering all his questions, and taking an hour or so out of their busy day to help him understand a little more about FIRST. He was ecstatic! For the entire competition, all I heard about was how great BBS was and how incredibly generous and gracious they had been to him. He loved competition and is thinking about attending the Chicago regional with me to cheer other teams on. This is one mentor thanking you for inspiring a student that I couldn't reach. Baxter's outreach just planted a seed which will blossom quickly to a lifelong FIRST member. Thank you. |
while designing our robot, we made it a stacker because we thought that would be what won the matches... turns out only one or two people tried stacking. i was really happy with our bot though, especially being a rookie team (1104). not a single robot there could push us, we could go under the bar, and we could stack if we needed to. i was the teams programmer, and there were quite of few people that sounded impressed that i'd written over 15 different programs for our robot. i ended up writing programs for 3-4 other robots, allies and opponents alike, and looking over a couple other teams programming. we ended up tying for 17th place, and two other kansas teams ranked under 40th (washington and newton) went to finals. i was disappointed, but there's always next year. i'm curious as to our design flaws, though. what do you think was bad about it that we could've done better? i'll end up printing off the replies and using it as a team discussion. thanks for a great time in St. Louis, and good luck to whoever's going to Houston.
Matt Torrey Programmer, Axtell TechnoEagles #1104 Friday's Rookie All-Star Winner :P |
Thank you Amanda, the Baxter Bomb Squad appreciates the recognition. Our main goal is to spread the spirit of FIRST, and we are always joyed to hear how we have impacted the lives of others. We are always willing to do whatever we can to enhance the experience FIRST provides to anyone.
On another note, we will also be attending the Chicago regional. Hopefully we will once again have the chance to meet Matt. |
CIA
Yes the CIA (central Indiana alliance) did face a tough first round against Baxter but we did have a lot of fun. The real fun though will be at Chicago!!11 Can't wait to see you there!

Team 967
A couple things on St. Louis Regionals.
#1 Who would have thought that the #15 seed would end up picking and alliance and win the whole shabang! #2 Those who own the ramp own the match! #3 Does any one have any good pictures of our robot? (967). #4 Rookies this year Rule!!!!!! Holy cow, I mean the rookies were woopin' it up and down the field! #5 This year's compitition is the roughest, Example: The practice field after thursdays practice was littered with aluminum shavings, tub shards, and had holes and tape fixing those holes all over it. #6 Autonomous mode is good but box score manipulation after that is better to be good at. #7 Don't expect your 1/8" aluminum bars to hold up to a 130 lbs. robot coming down the ramp to block you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #8 This years St. louis competition was AWESOME!!! Good luck to the Dragon slayers in Houston! #9 Ubergeeks, Nyack, BBS, Adidrons, Hellas angels, etc. That was fun, was it not? |
#10 A box of krispy-kremes is worth the chicken dance and public humiliation. :D
|
Quote:
Meeting Dean Kamen later in life, and hearing him say, "Weren't you the one doing the chicken dance?" Am I ever going to live this down?! |
Quote:
|
Amanda...You should have given us more of a warning...we would have had our robot do the chicken dance with you!
|
Your robot could do the chicken dance!? That wasn't in our scouting sheets!
|
Yeah...We had an extra auton. mode that we could have, so I threw together a chicken dance!
|
did you tell anyone you had programmed that? i wanna see that.
|
What's up with the standing that are on first's website? Are the scores for qualifying rounds? are they for overall score? Just wondering because we were the # 5 seed and they have us listed at #3:confused:. Dunno
|
Great Time
I like seeing all of the positive comments coming out of the St. Louis regional. It was a blast. I met a lot of new friends most of whose names I can not remember - part of getting older. Doing the field set up all day Friday aged me even a few more years - boy was I glad to see the extra help on saturday. If I find some pics of different robots in our stuff I will try to send them on. I saw some incredible machines but most important I saw and met some fantastic students.

yes ya'll team NYACK was crunk!!! They represented to the maximum, and they deserve tha spirit award HANDS DOWN. . .
congratulations to everybody that got an award. and congratulations to everyone who didn't because we're all winners |
upset...
well i had fun at the st. louis regionals..but there was just one thing that really upset me. there was a team there that disrespected my whole team and was rude to us over and over again. however, i do know that it wasn't the whole team...but there were people there that were extremilly rude towards us even when we were in our pit minding our own business. we tried to be friendly to everyone..and we cheered a lot of the people on..including this team that keep being rude to us and disrespectful. however, we didn't let them get us down and we still were nice to them and cheered them on even when they put us down. i guess it's all in how you carry yourself and how much you respect not only your team but others as well. they will get what they have coming to them eventually but that's ok. i do not have any hatered or anger towards them because i know that they can't help who they are and it wasn't the whole team so you can't put the whole team down for what a few selected members of that team did.
other than that i had fun...there were teams there that were fun to be around and joined us in our craziness..*laughs* our dancing and screaming and in cheering people on...i can't wait to go to nationals GO TEAMS!!!!!!!!!!!! |
regionals
Regionals was awesome! Our robot did great and I am really proud of our team. Congratulations to everyone who won an award, and those who didn't, don't worry about it.
:D |
st louis regionals
I had fun at the st. louis regionals, we cheered, had so much fun lol
fun fun fun I wish I could have stayed in st louis because it was tight. I loved the city. the arch was fun too it was scary going up to the top. I also want to give a shout out to teams: 442,1210, 648, 476 and I want to give a special shout out to team 931 |
Kansas Teams
I want to congratulate all the teams at SLR from Kansas. We are a rookie team from Paola, KS but we're going to Lone Star. Nonetheless, several members of are team made the trip to St. Louis (I so wanted to but Sub-State Basketball weekend). I have heard nothing but positive comments about the efforts of the team and they were especially impressed with the play of the Kansas teams. Go newton, osborne, axtell, central height, washington, and lawrence. We hope to represent the state as well as you all did in MO.
|
Thanks Robohyo,
I'm from the Newton team, 935. We just wanted to give that same shout-out to all teams from Kansas and hope that we are represented very well again and again. For those of you that don't know, Kansas teams had their first year last year. Up to that point, no Kansas teams existed in the FIRST program. Now our team is even thinking of putting on a regional in the near future. Again, thanks to all teams for such a great regional. Scott 935 |
This was my first time at St. Louis and I thought it was great. My heart is still partial to the Midwest Regional though. Thanks for a great competition from all the teams. I never thought we'd be picking, things would have to fall in such a way for the 15th seed to pick. I still laugh about not having a list done for picking though, I'm glad our representative made good choices. Thanks to all our allies over the three day period and a special thanks to 650 and 755 for working with us. My one disappointment is not seeing #45's ball bot running about.
|
yep.... team 1104, Axtell TechnoEagles here.... i think the kansas teams really shook the place up.... we were a rookie team, and we were in the standings most of the day around 15th. didn't make it to finals, though. really wish we had, but, that's life. i think overall we had a good robot... it stacked, it went under the bar, and we could push ANYONE we went up against. we helped tons of other teams, heck, i programmed a couple other robots for people (remember the wilsonator? that was one of em lol) and ended up with the rookie allstar award on friday. i come from a town of 150 households, the ENTIRE highschool has about 70 students, max... i think the fact that we did so well really shook up our town, woke some people up. it doesn't take a lot of money or tons of brains to do something innovative and educational as competing in first robotics... just initiative and a little motivation. i'm headed to college after this year, but i plan to mentor axtell's team next year, if we manage to get NASA's grant. if we don't get it, there's no way we can do it... our school literally doesn't have the finances to buy books in the library, let alone come up with 10 grand to support a robotics team, but i think we should be able to get the grant. several people are interested in joining next year, and most of the students that went are bragging to other schools and all their friends... i think FIRST is starting a great thing, and the fact that it's getting around to small schools like axtell's is wonderful. if it wasn't for this competition, and nasa for the grant, none of us would've ever been able to have the contact with technology and engineering that we were able to experience building the robot, affectionately labeled the "NerdBot" due to peer criticizm... but i know jealousy when i see it ;) anyways, thanks for everybody that helped our team out, and for any team that mentors a rookie team or takes the initiative to start a new team.... it's really a great opportunity for us (students) to get involved in something besides sports.

More notes
Kudos to all of the great teams in St. Louis... especially the awesome rookies.
The TechnoEagles (1104) were definitely impressive. We got a chance to partner with them and they are an amazing team. Another extremely impressive team are the Ubergeeks. They not only have a robot that can dish it out with the best of 'em, but they also had the whole marketing thing down... they have the "look" of a seasoned vet FIRST team. Their uniforms were tight, their pit was organized, and their team was working as a group... they had the "U" flag, the "U" hats, and a good overall presence. I was mostly impressed with the perseverence of team 1020, the Prank Monkeys from Ball State. This group was led in St. Louis by 1 teacher (full of heart but non-technical) and 1 freshman college student (amandabean). Sure, myself and some others helped them out... but to only give these monkeys some tips. They are self-supporting and very capable of competing in FIRST. I look forward to seeing them in Chicago when both of us will have more time to visit. Lastly, I gotta say that team 171 was awesome. These guys who were 15th seed went on to lead the winning alliance. They were very patient with my team as we were pitted right next to them. We crowed their space most of the weekend and they never said boo. They have an awsome robot that simply wins matches. Look at their robot and team and you see an effort in reliability, robustness, and efficiency. Kudos to 171! Andy B. |

Your comments mean a lot to this struggling rookie team. Your help in St. Lou was wonderful and it was generous of you to lend us your time. Just talking to some of your drivers and kids on your team, you can see the positive influence that FIRST has had on them. I'd be satisfied to be half the mentor you are to your kids and the FIRST community. p.s. - See you in Chicago! Amanda |
I have to give props to all the alabama teams (except us :p). they all made it into the finals.
lee high school (442) did very well considering their condition at the pre-comp. they really pulled it together and did very very well. 538 (the dragon slayers) did an amazing job all-around. nice bot, nice site, and obviously nice chairman's award. (not to mention all the raether attractive girls they had! :yikes: ) 547 was one of the most thrilling teams in st. louis. knocking down all 29 boxes over and over was probably one of the most entertaining things i've seen. even though they didn't seed first, i hope they do well at nat's and i hope we can see them there. all in all, good job everyone :) other teams i'd like to note on are 1020 and 967. 1020 (if they would've been able to perform the whole time) probably could've seeded very high. they could've easily taken the ramp. even though they didn't function, they kept working on their bot until it did. very nice job and i hope to see you at a later comp. 967 was one the most amazing bots i've ever seen. their powerful drivetrain and sleek design added to the great team dynamics they had. that was one of the prettiest bots in st. louis...nice job :D the übergeeks and i hope to see you all in houston (we aren't competing, but we'll be there helping everyone all we can) *jeremy |
THANKS!!!!!!
The uber geeks rule!!! by the way did yah see the picture of the coop. stacking we put up. You guys had a very unique design also! Thanks for the complements have fun at nats!:D
