Who won at VCU??? I liked the animation from The Combat* team. I thought it was very original how they set it up.

Soukup 11-03-2003 17:44

who won at st louis?

Chris Nowak 12-03-2003 17:40

heh....this is terrible....we just now found out that we won 2nd place at St. Louis.

RachelOfMars 15-03-2003 22:36

Déjà vu

Cybersonics, #103, won again, this time at UTC.

Their animation is certainly awesome. Awesome enough that they quite probably even deserve to win at Nationals.

But I do wonder who'll win at the NY and Long Island and J&J regionals, eh?

Maybe if I heard that 2nd and 3rd places were different between the two regionals, I wouldn't feel so bad. It would also help to know whether 2nd and 3rd place were going on to Nats. I emailed the guy in charge of the BAE regional listing concerns from here, and he passed it on to someone at FIRST. They're doing something about all this, for next year at least. Although Autodesk is adamant about keeping this conference system.

EugeneMarinelli 15-03-2003 23:57

Chesapeake

Team 651 won the animation award at the Chesapeake regional. 2nd and 3rd place went to teams 116 and 836.

Royal Assault didn't take the animation :(, but we did pick up the chairman's award and "Driving Tomorrow's Technlogy" :) !

Soukup 18-03-2003 08:00

in response to someone's post about 2nd and 3rd at nats. Yes second and third place, do move on to nationals to be judges. But no qualifying points are earned by even scoring first...so possibily you could win the animation at 5 regionals but because you didn't have enough qualifying points, you wouldn't be abel to go down to houston to accept a possible first place trophy.

jessjank. 18-03-2003 16:43

Winners

From what I've been able to gather, these are the winners of the Animation Awards at Regionals so far:

BAE Systems Granite State Regional: 1st-103 2nd-? 3rd-?

Buckeye Regional: 1st-1038 2nd-? 3rd-?

NASA/VCU regional: 1st-343 2nd-? 3rd-?

Sacramento Regional: 1st-192 2nd-100 3rd -114

St. Louis Regional: 1st-? 2nd-74 3rd-?

Arizona Regional: 1st-192 2nd-? 3rd-?

Chesapeake Regional: 1st-651 2nd-116 3rd-836

Pittsburgh Regional: 1st-? 2nd-? 3rd-?

UTC New England Regional: 1st-103 2nd-? 3rd-?

Does anyone know who won at Pittsburgh and/or St. Louis, and also 2nd & 3rd places at any of the Regionals with question marks?

Just checked FIRST's site and found that awards for each regional are now being listed:

http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2003/rgevents.htm

They're only posting first place winners for Animation, tho'...:o

How can a team win an award at one regional if they are competing at another one???

Yet again the winner was 103 at NYC but their team was at another regional this weekend, I don't know which one off hand, but I just don't understand?!?!

Can someone clarify this for me?

dude, how else are they supposed to do it? Some regionals would only have like one or two animations if they did it regional by regional. Autodesk has said that they are adamant about this system staying in place because of this. They obviously have put a lot a though into how this works, and seriously, it just gives you more chances to win.

On another note, We won it at Great Lakes!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our team is not competing there but we were there to do scouting!!! Anyone who was there probably saw the 5 members of our team who were there run down and grab the trophy!!!

I just saw the awards for St. Louis, and it looks like 1182 is our biggest competitor b/c they took first at st. louis and got an "honorably mention"(2nd or 3rd, it doesnt say) at Great Lakes.

Rich Kressly 22-03-2003 21:30

clarification

Actually, 103 was not competing at all this weekend. The conference system was devised by Autodesk. Once you enter your animation at a regional your team attends, you automatically compete at all regionals in that conference.

Oh and if anyone feels that this is just a personal attack on teams that win this way or Team 103 in particular just because my team didn't win, that is not the case at all. My team did not enter an animation this year. But if we had, I would be saying the same thing that I am now..

The system they have in place for this is just weird and needs to change. IMHO.

Rich Kressly 23-03-2003 07:22

Elgin,

No offense taken. The system has confused many along the way, including our team.

Wow! Three teams to make a winning animation...

Soukup 23-03-2003 12:43

woo-hooo!!!!!!

we won great lakes, it was really cool too.

Umm.... let me see... second plave was the thunderchickens 217 (the batman themed animation)

third was 1182. there animation was about the first symbols (circle, square, and triangle) building a roobt to reacxh the top. Kinda cute, and nice for a rookie team.

soo....we'll see you all in Midwest, whoever is going, and please stop by team 74's pit. We'll be there (myself and chris) and we really want to meet alot of you guys.

NORTH EAST RESULT TO DATE

Well I have the official results from the NORTH EAST Regional- This excludes the New Jersey- Mid Atlantic Regional wich I think is this weekend.

If you go to the Regional Results on the usfirst.org site you can find the first place winners. No other animation results are listed. I got these from the Autodesk AVA coordinator- (Kelly) and she only answerd my request with a list of the teams that are moving on and not what place and where they won. I thought this might cheer up a couple of teams- as it did mine.

103, 75, 288, 166, 500, 230, 271, 151, 178, 270. (THESE TEAMS ARE MOVING ON TO THE Championships) Congrats to all.

RachelOfMars 25-03-2003 15:30

Initial response:

WOOO-FREAKIN' HOO! Bwahahahahaaa.... Thank you to everyone who voted us high points....

Delayed response:

Is that even possible? There are ten teams in that list... Unless they started skipping the duplicate wins in their count of top three...

*giggles*

cyberbro85 25-03-2003 16:08

i dont know about the rest of you...

i wasn't so much disappointed with the method with the whole confernce thing. It was actually the implementation.

I don't know about the rest of the regionals. The two I went to, the animation judging was in the PIT. On a regular TV. I couldn't hear a thing. The volume was maxed out and I had my ear up against the speaker, and I couldn't make out what they were saying. It was ridiculous! Teams using dialogue to convey their message, or even just part of it, were screwed!

The Verizon center has special booths for people to watch events. Why couldn't we go up there to judge the animations? And there can't be only in two rooms in an entire building. There has to be someplace else where the judging can take place.

It came down to whose looked the best.
And from what I saw, that was 103 by far.

...You guys got told who you're second and third place was? They just announced the first place at both regionals. Left the rest of us hanging as to who else was moving on.

I found this year's animation judging to very upsetting. It seems to me that the Animation judging was thrown in as an afterthought. That it was a blow-off type thing. "Who cares what they think, they're just animation"? I hope they improve upon it future years. This was just absurd.

Well I know 103 three won twice in our conf. and I'm sure there was another duplicate. I'm surprised there were 10 I thought there'd be less. It would seem that the cream should keep rising to the top. But the judging is very subjective and (no Offence) but some of you are not fully trained to evaluate these. It takes years of experience to do that. Even many professionals have trouble in this area. And given the conditions of the viewing for judging that just adds to the ability to focus and hear and truely evaluate all the entries. The main reason I think some of you may have been unprepaired is that Autodesk assumed that everyone reviewed and fully understood the catagories and many other students pointed out in other threads that they wondered if some teams even read the entry form because they couldnt identify the answers to the required element- What Does FIRST Mean to Your Team?. These Animators are the same ones that are judging the animations too... Dont get me wrong- I feel that you can all do it- if there is time spend learning how to evaluate.

In our conf- there were 10 teams that are going on to the Professional Round of Judging- That doesn't include the NJ regional that is this weekend. I dont mind that there are 10 teams because I want as many teams as posible to get the opportunity to win. But- in theory (based on my oppinion which is based on my experience) there should only be 5-6 teams that continually rise to the top, if all the criteria are followed for the catagories. Technically there should be the same 3- but the system allows for the a subjective eye which exists in all of us. Anyway I hope three more teams are added to the list just to give more teams the opportunity to move on.

Good luck to all the other conferences as wee wind down the last few weekends and approach the Championships.

I got an email from Kelly at Autodesk- The email was based on my request and not from any official document. It was part of the answer to a larger email addressing many of the other concerns we all have/had.

I coppied and pasted from her email- So As long as she didnt miss type then ITS TRUE. CONGRATS- If we find out that there was a mistype- then I have a copy of the email to prove I wasnt making it up!!

:)

Obviosly they failed to read the title of the post here.

Those were the winning alliance members at NYC, not the winning animation team. 103 won @ NYC... :ahh:

Um...this was supposd to be about animation, which you listed, but nobody has a clue of what regional. So for everyone that follows, please post only about animation, because we're having trouble finding out who is winning and getting 2nd and third in the visualization awards. thanks.

Solon Jhee 26-03-2003 17:17

yeah and second of all im on team 302 and the only thing weve won at two regionals (buckeye and GLR) is that we won the GLR Regional with the help of 67 and 226....err do we have a clone team masquaraiding as us?

I think the problem is the people are posting from the portal. By the time they notice(if they ever do) it's too late. It would be nice if they deleted the post.

Chris Nowak 29-03-2003 22:12

maybe they should just close this thread...FIRST finally has the results up on their page, and they seem to be updating them quickly.

stevek 29-03-2003 22:26

Cosing this thread?

That would be great if only they announced the runner-ups- Other wise keep it open and if and when teams get notified, they can let us know- Also make sure you put a link to the animations on the "Post a Link toyour Animation" thread thats locked to the top of the Animation Forum Home Page.- That way we can all see them. If anoyone needs a place to host it- I'd be happy to- Contact me for details- AND PLEASE DONT SEND ME A 10+ or 100+Mb file- Compress and Optimize it!!!

Kevin Thorp 31-03-2003 11:27

We (Team 342, Charleston, SC) won the AVA at the Central Florida Regional. Sorry, I don't know who got 2nd or 3rd.

It sure would be great if Autodesk could post the ALL the winners & runner-ups on their web site.

stevek 03-04-2003 22:52

Here is the Offcial notification from FIRST via the "FRC Public Announcements" email list that they use throughout the season. In case you arent in contact with the people on your team who subscribe to this notification I figured I'd post it here. This does not include the final Regionals taking place this weekend.

They pointed out that since there were a lot of repeat winners they actually decided to advance the top 5 animations and not just the top 3. That means that all the student judges must have liked the same animations because even with a list of the top 5- it still seems pretty light. I counted 43 teams.
Good luck to all!

Congratulations to these teams:

192 100 114 60 253 8 957 1038 651 461
340 836 288 449 135 357 303 103 75 228
166 500 230 271 151 178 1182 74 783 217
537 247 919 967 1091 1063 343 116 807 342
281 510 34

Congratulations to all the teams!

Autodesk

Kevin Thorp 04-04-2003 07:40

Don't forget - there are 5 more regionals this weekend.

Soukup 05-04-2003 17:49

this is sweet.

we just won our 3rd trophy at West Michigan!!!! Thanks to everyone who voted. More thanks to the guy that set evrything up. This is even sweeter.....it was in it's own little room, off to the side with about 10 chairs, and the autodesk rep took time to EXPLAIN to ervyone the judging process and what all the categories are. Autodesk really went out of their way.

Soooo....we'll see you all in Houston, and hopefully (Nowak or Myself) can find time to load the animation up online now.

Eric Bareiss 06-04-2003 22:22

Gunn Robotics Team 192 won the Autodesk Visualization Award in the following places:
