Hartford is not a bad spot for a regional, but the meadows is not the greatest place due to lack of space. There is the Hartford civic center which is like the Verizon Center and the Worcester Centrum. The reason FIRST does not use it, is because the managment staff at the Civic center said if a paying event come along then we would have to drop the competition. Asking a venue to go 5 days without events is tough. Many of these arenas have minor league hockey team which also makes it difficult.
Good places to look into would be colleges with large arenas, like Uconn or Umass, where they dont need the arena every weekend. WPI is not large enough to hold a full regional, even with only 30 teams. For anyone that had been to BattleCry you know that only have the stands are open and the other half are for the pits. If it was a full size regional then you would have to use both sides for seats which means you would lose the pits and there is no other place for them. It is a good idea to move the regional to a better facilty, but lets just be happy that there is a place willing to hold even if is not the best. |
I agree with the Worcester regional. First of all, it's not in a big city..let's face it, a big city is nice, but easy to get lost in. The centrum isn't in a bad or unsafe place, and there's food places all around the area.. unlike the meadows. And how many teams are there in MA? Come on guys.. we need our own regional, these guys from CT and NH need to know what it's like to have to travel to another state for a regional. Not to mention, there are hotels all around the area. For sponsoring, we have Raytheon, EMC, Intel, and other big name sponors... I think it's a great idea. :)

As the creator of this thread i thought it was a good idea, but someone told me that they have been trying to get a MA regional for 6 years. i don't know if it is true but there seems to be alot of talk on this thread so keep at it and maybe it will happen.
Thanks |
That is true I know for a fact they have been try to have a regional in Worcester for sometime. I have lived here for 19 years now and I know it would be a good venue because of the size, location, area restaurants and whatnot. There still lies the problem of holding it for five straight days. I also know to rent out that building at anytime will cost you a cool $250,000. Obviously FIRST could never afford that for five days.
Like I had said in an earlier post to hold a venue of that size to no events and no profits for an entire week is very difficult. I agree it would be cool and convenient to have a regional in my home town, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. |
Im still wondering where you get 5 days from? 4 is more likley Wednesday Move in and set up thursday-saturday compition and saturday night move out. Its not that much I mean we can take down a concert in about 3 hours and First would be much less work than that.

From what I hear there is a big chance that there will be a Boston regional.
