2003 Long Island Regionals
 

Whats up everyone, its been fun.. Started a thread on this years LI regionals for all who wanna share. Team #1203 pandemonium here and our robot MOVES!!!

so does ours when the wheels aren't broken

we do some of that 'moving' too, except when our auto code goes the wrong way... or actually works and speeds over the ramp smashing into our wall knocking the oi on the floor with 3 seconds of auto mode to get it back up

Meh its the luck of the draw. Our robot moves very well and actually works very well. Unfournatly we are not doing very well. My teamates also have a tendancy to scare the hell out of me. Teamate walks up to me:
We broke a gear.
Me:Huh??? How the hell did we do that??
I walk up to the gearbox and realize that the gear did not break but the spacer on it needed to be fixed which is an easier(yet pain in the $@#$@#$@# considering how we built the thing) fix. They were doing that all day to me. :)
I am a littled annoyed that the team that won the spirit award was actually breaking the rules on noise makers. At least it was not as bad as what happened last year. We had floyd on one side with the same wooden blocks and part of the marching band on the other.

we do a pretty good job as long as our auto mode works but its been a little sketchy. We are currently in 4th so we arent doing that bad, but of course we can always do better...can we maybe top our 233 qp???

Hey guys, great job today. This competition is awesome! Just curious, which rule on noise makers are you refering to? I'm trying to convince people to give up the wooden blocks if that's what you mean, I know they're really annoying. heh. GOOD LUCK TOMORROW!! : )

Btw.. I'm the LI rep. for RCU (Robot Chicks Union) so if anyone is interesting in learning about it, supporting it, or joining stop by 287's pit station or ask anyone on the team where you can find Kelly.

i was thinking....and one thing that we do not have, is any bridge blockers at this regional. we have no huge robots like 229 or 68 that can block the entire bridge. i dunno if anyone else used thier stacker besides us, i haven't been able to watch a lot of matches because i've been working on things and making sure the autocode works

I havent seen much stacking either...one round our partner was port jeff and we made a stack during human mode and then they came over and grabbed the stack and sat int eh corner, protecting the stack and brought it out at the end. But we have not used our arms at all to do stacking. Our arms have come in handy for knocking down boxes and sweeping them.

we weren't able to stack at all because our arms exploded in our first qualification match. anyone see it? we took them off, and seem to be doing better without them.

i really enjoyed our match with 353, the Pobots. i liked it so much i even did donuts on top of the ramp!!! anyone see that? we have another match together tomorrow and i believe we can beat our previous score of 233.

Hehe, I think we should've gotten the jduges award for our auto mode, it was very creative, it found a new way to fail every time :-). Well me and my co-programmer dan are doing pretty well, we got all the major bugs out (such as bad labeling making a right turn instead a left...oops). I think the coolest failure was when our automode had too loose a turn, missed the ramp completely but managed to knock down the other alliance's HP stack. ;-) If anyone asks, it was supposed to do that. Well see ya later all.

Mannnnnnn I am so depressed, we ranked 14 out of 32 in the regional, were a rookie team that never broke down once, and made it to the top of the ramp 10 out of 11 matches.... We had an autonomous mode that was very reliable in getting up on the ramp to get to push the boxes, we were powerful too, the only robot there that overpowered us was from team #42, everyone else tried but we overcame them, our only weakness was that we were slow, i guess thats why we didnt get picked for the playoffs. Well we thought we deserved it but oh well. At least we got a rookie allstar award which didnt mean much, i dont get how 2 of out of 3 rookie teams get an all star award. It was fun though, so if u have any replies just hit em up.

263 won the motorola quality design award for our skids and huge wheels, and 271 won the gm industrial design for thier 4 wheel drive and 'twistable' robot chassis

871 took home part of the regional finalist award with 566 and alliance captain 545. ... i can still feel that adrenaline flowing.

Seriously, congratulations to everyone. And I mean that. I'm surprised we did so well. We really bombed it at BAE and UTC, but we took 5th at SBPLI. So, we're all pretty psyched about that. I mean, I'm excited. I was the human player and all. I know I didn't do much and stuff, but I'm feeling pretty good. And as for what Longwood said about our noisemakers...what rule are y'all referring to? Plus we advised against the blocks this year after we all went deaf last year. But they passed them out anyway. Yeah, so, great job to everyone, and good luck in the future.

As a representative from FESTO Corporation, and a mentor on team 358, I just wanted to say thanks to all the teams for a great regional event.

After attending the BAE Regional, I felt we had "pretty big shoes to fill" as far as matching the excitement, energy, and spirit of FIRST, and I would say we did it!!!

Congrats to all on a great event. Hopefully, we'll see some of you in Houston, otherwise next year on LI.

thanks 287 for making us your first pick, and setting up a good alliance with us and team 28. too bad we ran into a few problems with seeing the robot, and your chain fell off, then 28 had a little drive problem at the end of match 2. in all, we learned exactly how to work our robot now, so we feel we can do very well at nationals, congrats to the winners

Never mind there is a rule but it wans't enforced at all and I retract my former statement. After reading it I realized that all of the teams broke that rule in one form or another including our own team.:) I do not remember one team that did not hang a banner off a bleacher. Also it was in the shipping section.
Bah only death. We went death mute and blind at the same time. I think we were won of the most photographed teams out there.
Also thank you for lending us that saw tool to cut out our robot. It really helped us out to fix our robot.
Whoopeee team 564 won the chairman's award. I was jumping so much hehe. I looked down and thought to myself,"Where is my medal????" Then I realized that it fell a few feet back. Do not feel so depressed. We were a third year team that broke down once and we placed last. Does anyone recommend something to place over our tires to improve traction. I believe that our shredded tires and our sensitive controls is what gave our team problems moving

yeah, long island was awesome (my team wasn't actually there, but we jumped on the RAGE bus and went up anyways).

ummm, yeah, that wasn't actually part of the meaningful post. (Its called a random moment for a reason.) Just think Halo parties at 1 in the morning.

As for the regional, I must say that even if it wasn't quite as competitive as the UTC one (the only other one i've attended this year), It was a lot more fun to watch. And the finals match was amazing.

The only thing I was dissappointed at was that 810 never used their stacker thingamajigger. (supposedly they go under and over the bar at the same time so that they can carry a stack with them). It sounds really cool, but they never used it.

I must say, it was truely a great regional. We were up at UTC last week, thought it was challenging, and SBPLI would be easier, boy was I wrong. The bots there were amazing, and really put up a fight.

I must say thank you to teams 514 and 569. We had an amazing alliance, not losing a single match during the entire final matches, and we pulled it off.

Unfortunately, we will not be going down to Nationals in Houston this year because of it being denied by the board of ed. Being a Senior, I'm truely dissapointed about this, but it was definetely an amazing year for FIRST.

Actually I was mistaken, the only reason we aren't going to Nationals is simply because the 2 mentor leaders on the team did not want to go, why? I don't know. It's just really disappointing because I feel we had a very good chance at doing well in nationals :(

Team 30 didn't use any noise makers and we didn't hang a banner off a bleacher. Then again we usually only had 4 people in the stands at any given time. I guess it comes with the territory of being a small team from an even smaller school. Some of the teams brought more people than we have in our entire school.

I was really disapointed to see no big screen nor camera crews at SBPLI this year... =(

However, it was still fun, even if we didn't get chosen for the finals. We worked out the last of the robot's kinks (unfortionately, that doesn't do us much good because the school board cancelled our big trip to San Jose: -$4000 for us), watched some good matches, and played some Ultimate (thanks to everyone who came out during lunch and played some rounds with us today).

I also got to ride a Segway! The Segway person was giving out free rides yesterday after the awards ceremony.

Being on the SBPLI FIRST Committee that sets up the LI event, this was not something we wanted to do. I comes down to having the financial support to do "everything" in a very, very difficult economy.

The Long Island FIRST Regional is like no other, in that the single largest corporate contribution is "only" $25k (which was the case even when the economy was good), then it goes down quickly from there. Many other events get upwards of $100k (or even more) from a single company, then the donations from other companies on top of that.

Our LI Regional is truly a "home grown" event, for which if it were not for the coordination and fund raising efforts of Fred Breihut of SBPLI (which is a not-for-profit organization), we would not have.

I agree the big screen would be nice, but I would ask everyone to keep the big picture of the whole event in mind.

There was a camera crew from one of the teams this year. They were wearing blue shirts. Of course that does not help you much because there must have been quite a few teams wearing blue shirts. I was doing the docy-do with our lion as he was filming us.
Yeah I meant there was quite a few teams that did it. What school do you come from??
I am also quite surprised at the fact at how much of a work out I got walking/running around the place.

We're from High Technology High School in Lincroft, NJ. We're a magnet "pre-engineering" school with about 240 kids total.

Lol that is a small school. A really small school. Longwood is about 1000 kids i think in 11th grade.
Anyway I have a funny story:
I ask a mentor what is the robot supposed to do in autonomous mode. He goes,"Well it is supposed to follow the line but as you can see we downloaded a new code into the robot?"
So I go,"You have no idea what is going to happen do you?"
He says,"Yes"

Who is popek????????? I am so lost and I was at that regional.

Actually it was enforced. RAGE went from no spirit because we were doing badly on Friday, to too much team spirit on Saturday. We had those bottles on poles and we were hitting them on the bleachers and, well, i guess one of the FIRST people in the pits came up to us and said we could no longer use them because the sound amplified through the bleachers and was to loud in the pits.

wysyswyg, its ok, popek is a kid from team 571, paragon, who, along with like 4 other paragon kids hopped the bus with RAGE, just to come have some fun, its just one of those long, drawn out inside jokes that is only funny to those of us who played halo like all night. Hey, jk2005, thanx for bringin that to light, i hope everyone heard that, thats right, 173, probably the least spirited team... EVER, got yelled at for havin too much spirit, yea baby!

Sigh what great timing I have with school. This regional landed on a day in which I have a math project and a seven page english project due on the same day.

No.. team 30 wins the award for least spirited by far. We never had more than 6 people in the stands and half of them spent the whole time talking about how much we sucked. We only had like 2 team signs and most of the time we only held up half of one.

haha, RAGE may not have much, but ragelax has tons of it! In fact, I do believe he recieved an award all by himself! Maybe I should give colin a call and see If i can digitize some of his award winning performance for public consumption here on CD.

very funny jake, dont go startin that again, or there may not be room on the rage bus next time the paragon kids get bored for the weekend, p.s., the award is sitting on the shelf at our practice facility already, and in a strange way, im proud of it!

ive got to admit, 30 just might win for least spirit, with 2 signs, 1 saying fu and one saying ry, it was putting across an interesting message to the crowd

We actually had another set of signs that had each individual letter in FURY and the number 30. But the FU RY ones are the most popular and due to mass laziness on the part of our team members in the stands they were used most often. We used to have signs that said Team XXX(30 in Roman numerals). I have no idea what happened to them but I'm sure if we found them they'd be popular too. You gotta love all the fun you can have with our team name and number.

team 263 had the 'official' video board set up in the stands, i don't know if you saw it, but we had the camera set up fpr Soap 108, and rage came by to plug in thier vcr

Can you private message me if you do?? That would be really cool if I could get a copy of it on the computer. Im betting that there would be quite a few pictures of us on the internet pretty soon.

i saw them do it in the pits...it worked but very slowly...

My understanding is that they were running the pivot at 1/4 of its designed operating speed, so that would slow down the process significantly.

thats correct, were running two robotics demo's and a breif informational session on what is FIRST. anyone on a team should come down during the demo, should be fun. we're bringing our 2002 bot, and maybe our 2001 bot since the new one is on its way to nats

I don't remember the exact number, but at full speed, we had that nasty tendency of stripping gears and having to overnight replacement ones.

I want to add my congratulations to all the teams at the LI Regional. Special thanks go to 173 Rage & 467 Duct Tape Bandits our alliance partners for well fought matches.

505 Saunders made a great play against us (358) on Friday by coming under the bar and ramming us during autonomous mode. They were faster than we were and that made them quick enough to accomplish that move. We did avoid it neatly the next time they tried it.

My favorite part was when 373 Locust Valley built and protected that stack of 6 bins during the seeding matches. I'm glad you got your autonomous mode working too. That's a lot to do while the matches are going on and you had to deal with those pins coming out of the motors at the same time.

Congrats to 564 Longwood for winning the Chairman's award. You are a great team and stood out for all the spirit you demonstrated all the way through the Finals.

Ian you should be proud of the award you recieved. Of which the name I shall not mention due to the fact you could very easily kill me.

And to Mark McLeod, you were a great alliance partner as well it is a shame we could not have gone as far as possible. Oh well there is always nationals to have another title shot.

I just wanna thank the alliance partners of 871. Without you guys, we'd have ended up in 27th place. Everybody at the competition did a great job. Congrats to 870 and the winners of the LI regional.

yeaa, LI regional was intense. Teh qualifyin matches were ok but the finals were intense as all hell. And what a day saturday. We went from finishin 27th afte rthe seeding matches to 2nd and teh regional finalists. thanx to our alliance partners teams 545 the robodawgs and team 566. We dominated, knockin out teh #1 seeded alliance of 358, 173(RAGE) and 467. And argueably the best two robots there, 173 and 358. Def an amazing day and one that will nto be forgotten. See u guys in the nationals.

GREAT COMPETITION!! I had more fun this year at LI than I did last year at Nats where we were 2nd seed and divisional finalists, and here we were 2nd seed and only Quarter-finalists!!

ah yes, she's not joking. However, you've only proven that you can fly while your attempting to forcibly remove someones throat, not when your running away...

any large rush of emotion, be it fear or anger, i can fly, and sometimes pure joy, we'll see how i do on flying in houston :D

In 68, the reason you guys took on two robots by yourselves was because one of our pit guys forgot to close our pneumatic release valve while we were fixing our wheels - no pressure means transmissions designed to be locked into place by air pressure don't stay locked, and robots dependent on those transmissions don't move.

Quite disappointing for us. Nevertheless, you guys played a good match ;-)

Sorry about match 5, my friend who is hosting the server forgot to give global permissions for those in linux.

Match 60 runs fine for me in Media Player, right after the human player goes it pauses for about a second. But it goes again fine. It plays PERFECT in DivX player, they were compressed with DivX4.03 in case that might be the problemo.

And I do aplogize for the quality of the CAMERAMAN, it was one of our more spastic members. The point of the video is to see what our robot is doing though, so if you keep that in mind, hopefully you won't get too dizzy :yikes:

During our first match against team 505, they hit us in the first few seconds of autonomous mode and knocked us off during the rest of us. So during our second match we changed our autonomous mode
