Info on Houston

Just a note to teams that will be coming to Nationals. Team 118, the Robonauts, is putting together packets for the teams coming down that will have information such as places to eat, visit, and some Home Depot stores in the area around their hotels. It's just one of our ways to congratulate you on getting this far and to welcome you to our home city. :D - Heather

miketwalker 26-03-2003 22:13

Thank you very much! :)

ngreen 26-03-2003 22:54

Will the packets be ready for the Lone Star Regional?

If so, I would be really interested in getting one. I know we plan to visit JSC on Wednesday but we haven't put much thought in to anything else. Someone from 624 mentioned some things in one of his post but we haven't planned anything other than JSC and getting there and competing. I really just hope we find some place good to eat. I know after building the robot for six weeks it seems like you can go without food, but it would be nice to eat. Only another 6 days before we leave for LSR! I look forward to seeing you there and hopefully finding some food.

heather118 26-03-2003 23:18

Unfortunatly we won't have all of them printed and ready by regionals, but any out of state teams coming down can feel free to e-mail me and I'll get them the info we have together then. Just let me know :) - Heather

234EP 26-03-2003 23:19

very cool. thanks to you and your team for getting the information for us

ngreen 26-03-2003 23:38

That would work good. I know my gifted teacher really freaks out about these things so having an idea before hand might relieve some stress for her.

My email is willie_nelson_03@yahoo.com if you would like to send me the information you've gathered so far. Thank you for anything information about Houston you'll send.

I'll see you in Houston

PS Your robot looks scary from what I've seen. Good luck, I hope we are on the same alliance because I don't want to go against that thing.

DirtyBird213 28-03-2003 21:30

Has anyone from the Houston area eaten at The Stables? Our hotel recommended them for our team (213 Dirty Birds) and we have reservations there on Thursday for a team dinner. We were just hoping we didn't book ourselves into a bad restaurant!

LSevcik 30-03-2003 23:38

Just a note for anyone competing at the Lone Star Regional. Your team coach has been email information on the purchase of parking passes, concession box lunches and a map of Houston with eating places, grocery stores, home depot locations, radio shack locations and entertainment places. In addition, although we aren't having a team party we do have a special surprise on Friday afternoon for all teams. See ya next week! Lucia - Regional Director

Ben Mitchell 31-03-2003 06:23

Thanks for the info, Heather - where can we pick up these packets once we are in Houston? Will they be availible in the pits on Thursday?

Matt Attallah 31-03-2003 15:11

How pimp!! Tell me when i see you (just yell at the guy from team 5 w/ the red hair!) and i gotta come and give you a hug!! Sweet!

heather118 31-03-2003 18:22

What we were hoping to do is get the packets to the hotels for them to hand to the teams when they arive so if they want they can plan a few things. We might hand it out in the pits however so we can meet everyone and hand out our other things as well. Right now we're worrying about regionals so the details will be fixed after this Sat. -Heather

Specialagentjim 31-03-2003 21:00

I noticed @ UCF one of the teams that did this left thier packets over at the pit admin station...it didnt get much publicity but It was a pretty good way to distribute it to at least one person per team, as almost every team goes there at SOME point...

Ben Mitchell 07-04-2003 22:04

Any more info about this packet?

My team has never been to the area, and we would apprecuate some tips for good places to eat, things to do, etc.:)

Joe Matt 07-04-2003 22:09

Us too! If you can just upload a few good places to eat that arn't very expensive and a sight or two would be nice! :D

heather118 07-04-2003 22:28

A great place to check out (shameless plug b/c I help here) http://www.houstonmuseumdistrict.org/ the Museum of Natural Science is very great. Also if you want to head over there by the zoo also there is a nice park you can just hang out in. The weather will be nice, 70s. :) you people get the nice weather... :p Also I don't really know of good resturants that are in the area you will be staying at (1 I don't live there 2 I don't know what area you will be near), however there will be maps for food in the packet for each hotel and the Relient area. I hope that was some good info for you. If you need anymore just write back andI'll be seeing you guys in 3 days. - Heather

I enjoyed Bennigan's. The Monte Cristo was superb, a little pricey though. We ended up at the Golden Corral twice which was a little pricey for my appetite, and the Shoney's by the Radisson. Bennigan's is my top choice though, everything looked good and the service was great, and the meal was under 10 unless you got the slab of rib which one of our team members polished off. Good Luck though.

heather118 07-04-2003 22:40

Bennigan's is a good resturant, and if I remember correctly Shoney's has a wonderful breakfast buffet. You might want to try that some morning.

Elgin Clock 07-04-2003 23:18

Shoneys???? Oh YES!!! I remember those from my trip half way across the country with my dad visiting relatives when I was younger...

Where is the nearest one??

heather118 07-04-2003 23:22

It's pretty close to the actual arena. You'll prolly pass it sometime when you're down here. - Heather

Citysearch Houston

If you guys are looking for info about places to in Houston, I would reccomend the Citysearch Houston site i have linked in this other thread. Also in this thread I posted links to differnt things to do and other tourist resouce websites.

http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...070#post157070

When you are on there if you want to find the places that are arround the Reliant Park area select the Medical Center/Dome neighborhood.

Its not the best site out there, and it sure doesnt have everything. (When I selected the dome neighborhood i couldnt even find the Joe's Crabshack next to Astroworld across 610 from the dome.) But it does have still has pretty good information about resturants and ratings about places.

Courtneyteam330 08-04-2003 08:29

You guys seem to know a lot about Houston so I only have 2 questions. What time zone are you guys in and did you observe Daylight savings time? Because I don't want to get there and be really tired! I got up at 5 this morning and I am gonna go to sleep at like 8 tonight because we have to be at the airport at 4:45 AM tomorrow! (AHHHHHHHHHH I am not a morning person! lol) I am in CA so we are in the pacific time zone so how many hours do I have to adjust? I think it is two hours but I am not positive.

118 Tech 08-04-2003 11:50

We are in the Central Time Zone and DO observe Daylight Savings Time and are curently in daylight savings time. From Califonia you need to set your clock AHEAD 2 hours.

Here a list

Here is a list of "Importnt Places in Houston"

just sent to me by NYC Team334.

Take a look- it maybe useful.

118 Tech 08-04-2003 12:51

Out of that list I would add that some other 24 hours places to are eat are Whataburger (if its late nignt try the breakfast taquitos) and Jack-In-The-Box both of these are nomal fast food chains and are everywhere in Housoton. esp Jack-In-The-Box.

I believe there is a Whataburger, Sonic, Luthers BBQ, and other fast food places on Main Street which is the street one block west of Kirby dirve. Kirby Dirive is the street that is the west boundry of the Reliant Park complex. On Old Spanish Trail there is a Jack-In-The Box and some other fast food places. Old Spanish trail connects to Main and is north of the Dome

On both of these roads there are a few grocery stores i think. I know there is one if you take Old Spansih Trail. Going from main to Almeda on Old Spanish Trail, it is on your right and between fannin and almeda. It should be a Krogers which is 24 hours i think.

Also that if you need something qick duing the competition the best places to go are the Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowes that which are the closest places to the event site

Home Depot
Gulfgate Mall
6810 Gulf Freeway
Houston, TX 77087
713.649.1108

Lowes
South East Houston
1000 Gulfgate Center Mall
Houston, TX 77087
713.645.5550

Both of theses are in the GlufGate Shopping center wich is Where Loop 610 and I-45 meet on the south side of Houston. Going East from the dome On 610 Exit on Woodridge and go north on Wood Ridge and you should see a Lowes on the Right. IF you want the HomeDepot Keep going on Woodridge till you hit the I-45 feeder road, Turn right onto the feeder before you go under the freeway and keep going on this road it should be on your right.

The Walmart is on north bound side South Post Oak, on the part that is south of the 610 Loop. You can get there by taking Gettign on 610 and exit on South Post Oak Or you can take Main which is one block west of The dome, and go on that till you hit South Post Oak, from there you go North On South Post Oak.

Great suggestion!

Now that I'm lost- can someone from Houston get
some tourist maps for the out of towners.
A good reason to visit your pit.

Thanks.
:)

Are there any places with a mechanical bull? my team was just wondering...

118 Tech 09-04-2003 03:31

LOL

I laughed the first time i read that. First of all im one thats far from one who would go to a country bar. The term "Hell No" comes to mind for some reason ;) . I wouldnt know where to find something like that. I think one club on Richmond has a Western Theme and may have that. Its called Wild Wild West. It is a club and it may be 18 probably 21 to get in. Maybe one of the
Dave and Busters, but I dont think we have many places that have that, I could be wrong, but Im not going to one any time soon.
