At the Natioanls

There are few teams that are signed up for the Nationals from Canada.
I was wondering if there are any more teams from Canada attending?

jonathan lall 30-03-2003 12:55

I believe Mowat (Team 783), that has an excellent robot, is going, but I'm sure many more odd-numbered teams from Canada will too. We'll go if we can, however the likelyhood of that isn't particularly high.

J Flex 188 30-03-2003 13:49

Not just a money issue either..

TheLastOne 30-03-2003 17:10

We are going. The only question is, how many banks will we have to rob?

Alaina 30-03-2003 18:03

I counted 4 Canadian teams on the team list for Nationals the other day. I think it's awesome that Canadian teams are coming at all. But that's jut me....Yeah, I'm American...

MORLET 30-03-2003 18:16

Fundraising

The Kinetic Knights (781) and WARP7 (865) faced a similar situation when they won with us last year. You might want to compare 'emergency' fundraising strategies with them.

Congrats, Mackenzie!

Chris P 30-03-2003 18:20

We have our plane tickets set along with our hotel booked. We will definately be there. But now with the opening of registration and the great Regional Winners, there will hopefully be more.

Chris

MORLET 30-03-2003 19:26

Travel Arrangements

How will the Canadian teams be getting to the Championship? Is anybody driving like last year? :)

We'll be flying direct to Houston on Air Canada flight 688, on Wednesday, April 9th.

D. Gregory 30-03-2003 19:45

We would be going but the Iraq war has made things difficult.

Greg 30-03-2003 19:46

We'll drive... if we are able to go (we are on the waiting list :))

Shanan 30-03-2003 21:27

S.W.A.T. (team 771) will be going to the championship this year, so there will be a bunch of girls wearing kilts and blue t-shirts bringing a little extra spirit to the event. After our success in the Canadian Regional, we can't wait to get back into action in Houston. We'll be flying down on the 9th (7:20 flight on Air Canada I think). I hope to see you all there!! :D

Chris P 31-03-2003 17:56

After our 24 hour bus ride to Florida last year we decided on flying. We are going to be flying out of Detroit early Wednesday morning (8:55 I think) on American Airlines I think.

Chris

jpren 31-03-2003 18:02

We should have a Canadian party in houston, or maybe just a place for all canadian teams to chill out at the team party in Astroworld. I'm canadian myself but I currently reside in the states (NJ).

Hope to see you all in Houston in 9 days!

JP
<aim: jpren2025>

Mike Yan 01-04-2003 00:21

Well we know Crescent [Us] and SWAT are at the Hyatt....

Two Canadian teams in one hotel ....
and the playoffs :yikes:

!!!PARTY!!!!

jpren 01-04-2003 10:02

Team 75 is also staying at the Hyatt. See you all there!

JP
<aim:jpren2025>

Harrison 01-04-2003 10:27

783 Will be there.

We're flying with Continental Airlines 7pmish on the 9th, direct to Houston from Toronto.

The hotel we're at is in the Hyatt Regency (I beleive).

Thats 3 Canuck teams at the Hyatt! Watch out!

CANADA REPRESENT!!!

(psst: Everyone bring your Canada flags)

Shanan 01-04-2003 10:45

whoa! 3 Canadian teams in the same hotel?!? rock on! I'll do a little search for a canadian flag, though we've already been told by a bunch of teams to take the canadian flag off of our robot. So the chances of our teacher letting us bring an actual flag are slim to nill. We'll probably just end up painting it on our face instead or something.

Harrison 01-04-2003 11:20

Our robot is plastered with Canadian Flags, and we have a few big, real, flags as well.

We did all that in Michigan, it went over really well. At one point on Saturday at the GLR we had an an entire section chanting 'Go Canada!' We were the only Canadians at the GLR.

Who all was telling you to take off your Canada stuff???

Shanan 01-04-2003 13:46

some people from a few different teams mentioned that we should remove it when we were at the Canadian Regional. A couple of my teachers have expressed their concern over it too. I don't think it's THAT big of a deal, so I'm hoping that we'll be able to keep it on. Besides, that flag took us like 2 hours to cut and put on, so I have noooo desire to take it off!! :ahh:

MORLET 01-04-2003 16:42

The division list has been posted.

1114 - Newton

<edit>See below. Simbotics was on the official FIRST list, but not the spreadsheet I was looking at. Thanks Dinush!</edit>

Team 783 will be at Pearson by 5 a.m. (yawn) next Wednesday
and hope to be relaxing by the pool at the Holiday Inn Gateway
just after lunch (ahhhh)

see ya'll there, eh!

Shanan 01-04-2003 20:46

I'm in the same boat as you as far as school goes. I've been sick for almost a week now. I was sick the day before regionals, so I missed school. Then I missed 2 more days of school because I was at the regionals. And now today my little flu has decided to appear once again, so I've missed yet another day of school. YIKES! I've got like 8 days of craziness to get through before the regionals, with tests, assignments, ISU's - it seems everything is due this week/next week. Everyone on SWAT seems to be suffering like this, but Houston is the light at the end of our tunnel. We all seem to be in robot withdrawal or something. All we can think of is things we should get/buy before we leave for the championship. Which reminds me....I still have to go out and buy gifts for the mentors and teachers who helped. Oh my...it's gonna be one looooong week! :ahh:

But it's worth it! :D

gumby 01-04-2003 23:38

Playoffs start on Wednesday night... Leafs should be in Philly.. as long as ESPN2 broadcasts the series, I will be happy... :D *crosses fingers*

Now... 3 Canadian teams in the same building should make for interesting nights during Leaf games... I remember the chaos that we caused (just 610) last year in Florida. After every Leaf goal, everyone on the team would go running out of the room yelling... Anyone who's not on Crescent Robotics remember that?

I plan on finding a flag to bring... If not a Canadian flag, my Leafs flag is coming to Houston... and going up in our pits... :D

I'll be mighty upset if they don't have the series on.

And my nice big 4'x6' Toronto Maple Leaf flag is definitely coming - along with my collection of big Canadian flags.

Lets start the chant now.... GO! LEAFS! GO!

Steve W 02-04-2003 10:52

I hopen we can add 1 more Canadian team. Team 188 is going to West Michigan this week and if we win then .....
Canadian teams on Currie field will get a little extra from the announcer(me) being Canadian and all, EH. Lets show them that we can make the Championship as exciting as the Canadian Regional.

robbyg 02-04-2003 18:25

Our team is attending the Chamionship In Houston.
Our Team Number Is 1114
Our team name is Simbotics
Visit us at www.simbotics.net

Shanan 02-04-2003 21:26

wow! 4 canadian teams staying in the same hotel now?!? Hyatt will probably be the loudest hotel in Houston!

Good luck to 188 on their upcoming regional. It would be great to see you at the championship!

MissAbi 02-04-2003 21:49

Hey! How do I get in on the hockey action? We'll be at the Hyatt too. I'm from a Michigan team (near Detroit) that's almost Canada.

MichalSkiba 02-04-2003 21:58

Team 854 (Martingrove, Winners of the Delphi Driving Tomorrow's Techology Award Winners) are going to Houston as well. We're leaving Tuesday morning on a bus with Hill Crest C.I. (1088 i think), and arriving in Houston @ 4pm on Wedneday. 30 hour ride  . We're leaving right after the social on Saturady, driving all day Sunday and arriving at our school @ 3:30 am on Monday. Just in time for school!!!!. (ya right).
Anyone else staying at Hyatt Regency (Downtown location)?

S.W.A.T>Too bad we didn't win that last match against 48. Would have put us in 7th, and you girls in (10th?).

Good luck to all Canadian teams.

The bus sucks... And, I think there are 4 other Canadian teams at the same hotel... Unless I'm reading wrong, that makes 5 teams from Toronto in the same building... Hockey Night in Houston... :D (Well, it doesn't have quite the same ring to it, but meh..)

Simeon 02-04-2003 23:26

heh
i think school board banned like all school trips for us

no idea.
either way, we have no money to go...

lol
i suppose we can send the robot there...
lol
no drivers.. just the robot
haha.
^_^

Shanan 03-04-2003 08:55

5 canadian teams at Hyatt and counting - I can't wait!

yeah, it's too bad we lost that last match, but it was really close! I think 48 only won by one box or something. I like really close matches like that - really gets people pumped up! We'll have a re-match in Houston I'm sure!! I'm STILL working on strategy...I must be obsessed or something hehe

robbyg 03-04-2003 15:59

Team 1114 is staying at the Hyatt.
We are flying down 2 Houston on Wednesday Morning @ 8am on American Airlines Flight Number 603 and 1303.

Cya in Houston

The TDSB banned all school trips as well...The simple workaround: "This trip is in no way affiliated with the Toronto District School Board"....Thus we're going :)

As for hockey action....Just look for all the Maple Leaf flags, and you'll know where the hockey action is ;)

As for 30 hour bus rides.....Yeah they suck.....But so do 6:40am flights....be at the airport by 5am (when it opens), so I'll have to get up about 3:30am Wednesday morning in time to get ready and to get to the airport. But I'll be relaxing in the hotel's Spa by about noon on Wednesday :)

Simeon 03-04-2003 19:19

well.. either way, we have no money to go...
besides, most of the members of our team are graduating this year, which means we have tonnes of assignments/ISUs and exams to worry about. Already too much damage to my marks have occured... too bad.. sigh.. failed my physics test today, but hey.. it's robotics. anything for that... hehe.. nehoo.. best of luck to all canadian teams down there! Bring back up the FIRST awards.. hehe (just like olympic hockey) heh

Kane_da_slayer 03-04-2003 20:42

Anybody still counting canadian teams staying at the Hyatt, cause Mackenzie will be there too. Can anybody say huge party? We're flying down wednesday night, but because of problems with cash we only have 12 members going and those 12 member have to spot half the cost, the remainder of the bill goes to the school. Anybody know of any companies who will be willing to throw over some cash on really short notice or just cash for that matter. So far everybody we've called said either try back next year or just said no.

But at least 912 will represent!!!

see you all there

good luck at the border

Shanan 03-04-2003 20:49

looks like 6 of the 8 canadian teams going to the championship (last I checked) are all staying at Hyatt. woo hoo! :D

Kane_da_slayer 03-04-2003 21:25

six teams....that should be cool

has anybody else felt the stress that this trip is causing.

cause we are just having one heck of a time

Canada Represent

I will be so wonderful to see all those Canadian Flags at the Championship. For the past few years it has been mostly a very small group. But this year, even with a travel ban, many team are going down, good for you all! You will all have a great time.

Hyatt = Canadian Party Central!
Crescent has been down to the championship two times prior, both times the leafs have been in the playoffs, when the leafs score, we all run out of our rooms and go running up and down the hallways screaming GO LEAFS GO! I encourage all other Leafs fans down there to join us in watching the games.

The issue I think we all are thinking about it how will our demonstration of Canadian identity (aka flag waving) be taken by our American friends. We all know our government’s position on the war, and no matter what your personal thoughts on it, it may be best for all us Canadians to be gracious and understanding to all of our friends down south at the championship. If we act respectively to their demonstrations of national identity, the same respect will be extended to us Canadians.

Any thoughts?

Harrison 03-04-2003 22:55

I think you're right - but I also think a lot of people (teachers, some students, etc) are getting a little over-concerned.

I must admit that before we got down to Michigan for the GLR that I told the people on 783 to not bring up Iraq or anything, cause I wasn't sure how 'the Canadians' would be received.

Well, long story short everyone loved us and seemed to love our flags - at one point an entire section of Americans was chanting 'Go Canada!'.

The group of people involved in FIRST are definitely the most welcoming people in the world (Americans and Canadians), and everyone supports everyone else. I expect more of the same in Houston.

Go America! Go Canada!, and GO LEAFS GO!!!!!!

MissAbi 03-04-2003 23:00

As an American, and a member of the military, I'm totally fine and think the Candian flags are cool. (fond memories of GLR coming back to me). We'll be displaying our US flag in our pits. You all should go on and do the same. Besides we're all one big happy FIRST family anyway.

PS: I'm coming over to watch the game

MichalSkiba 04-04-2003 21:13

We are taking 11 students and 4 parents (not teachers, stupid TDSB situation, why is it that we can't go with an affiliation with TDSB yet they paid our enterance fee?). Most of the parents are going shopping (complementry shuttle service from hyatt to malls). Our team is bringing LOTS of canadian flags, curtousy of Allan Rock!

Indeed, the Hyatt is going to be the Canadian headquarters in Houston, good luck tring to get into the pool!

ZACH P. 04-04-2003 21:51

team 321 is staying at the hyatt also, i guess this means i shouldnt bring my DVD of the south park movie. (joking) seriously, i love Canada, its gonna be cool.

Ah yes, Blame Canada! Blame Canada! I blame Canada for all our bad weather... all that cold air must've come from you guys...

Just kidding... I like Canada. It's a cool place. I just like joking about it...

Chris P 05-04-2003 00:33

8 Canadian teams. This will be awesome. The stands...all one area packed with Canadian flags. :)

It looks like the Hyatt is quite the distance to the Radisson...too bad.

See you guys in Houston (we'll be there around 2pm CST Wednesday).

Chris

MichalSkiba 05-04-2003 13:33

I'm going to bring my collection of DivX movies (over 50), to the Hyatt. In order to have movies nights for the Canadian teams we need a laptop (our team 854 already has one), and a projector (I think the meeting rooms in the Basement of the Hyatt will have some, just that we're gonna have to beg the hotel staff) or a DVD player and a T.V. (Hyatt again?)

Good luck to all Canadian and Archimedes teams

Chris P 05-04-2003 17:58

It looks as if since Woburn (188) won today, they'll be going too. 9 teams!! Woo!!

Chris

Shanan 05-04-2003 18:20

Ohhhhhhhhh Canadaaaa

whoa! Looks like Canada is coming out in full force this year! It's gonna be a blast. Only 4 more sleeps until the championship is in full swing!

By the way, doesn anyone know where you can buy some huge canadian flags? I've been to a couple of places, but they only sold those dinky paper ones on little sticks. I'd like something that might actually be seen more than 10 feet away hehe :D I'd also like to try and get some little fake canadian flag tattoos, so if anyone has any info on that, hook me up!

Mucho Gracias!

Robb Gerber 05-04-2003 18:33

To All you Hyatt crazies...since we booked WAY early...
we got into the Holiday Inn Greenway Plaza.

We'll have vehicles and we may just come over and check out the digs at the Hyatt.

Good Luck to y'all!

Mike Yan 05-04-2003 23:00

DivX movies

Movies sound good..
BUT why don't we use the projector for a better use, mainly HOCKEY!!!!

MichalSkiba 06-04-2003 16:25

But yeah, like Jeff said, we'll be looking for your updates both here and on our site every day :)

Kane_da_slayer 07-04-2003 17:53

Congrats Woburn, good come back, we were worried that woburn wouldnt be coming, that final at FCR must have been an upset, but it looks like you guys and girls are determined, good luck in Curie and see you in houston

J Flex 188 07-04-2003 18:12

thanks alot for all the votes of confidence and congratulations =)

lol.. that would be great if 188 ended up staying there too... maybe some speed(hotel)ball in the corridors again hmm?

Good Job Woburn!

Crescent Robotics, Team 610, would like to congratulate Woburn Robotics, Team 188 for winning the 2003 West Michigan Regional. As THE Original Canadian team, Woburn has been a pioneer in spreading FIRST across international borders. Woburn has been a model team for not only Canadian FIRST Teams, but to all the teams involved in this incredible competition. Last year, they were awarded the 2002 Canadian Regional Chairman’s Award for their work in expanding FIRST to Canada, founding the Canadian Regional along with our team, helping to create 20 new Canadian teams, and doubling that figure this year. Woburn has consistently had an extremely competitive robot, but this is the first Regional Championship win, after being a finalist in this year’s Canadian Regional.

Great Work Woburn! You guys sure deserve it!

See you down in Houston!

Your friends, Crescent Robotics

oh you know it.. this'll be like the third year in my recent memory at least when the leafs faced the flyers... at least in the first round.. our record is pretty good :D see what we can do without home ice

Justin 188 07-04-2003 22:52

Thanks Crescent!!

To aBoris26 and the rest of the Crescent team: thanks for your support, especially during the finals at the Canadian Regional. You guys were awesome yourselves, and should be proud. Also, hats off to you guys for winning the Chairman's Award this year. To quote one of your alumni, Alan - "we won it last year, this year it's your turn." :D

Hinkel Y. 07-04-2003 22:55

Do we get to choose our teams or is FIRST gonna decide for us? I would like to see all of the Canadian Teams together...

PhillyRobotics 07-04-2003 22:55

Hyatt Teams

Hey Guys,
I am captain of team 321, and we should be at the hotel at about 10am. I was inquiring if any team would want to get together after the hockey game and have like a team "party" or something along those lines. I am willing to hang out and meet some new people, discuss anything. Just like a huge hang out. Maybe get some food. A FIRST Nationals Eve party. Just an idea, if anyone has any better, let me know. I would enjoy doing something with all the teams at the hotel.
Shrey

I have also found out that we are equidistant from 2 taco bells (approx. 12 blocks each) and about 2 blocks from a Taco Cabana.
Most excellent.

Erm... Are you sure you want that?? I mean, you're from Philly, which I'm going to assume means that you're a Flyers fan (you posted in here, right?). I'm not sure that you understand quite what you're getting into by saying that you want to talk to a whole bunch of hyper Leafs fans... ;) But hey, could be interesting, I'd prolly go...

As for watching the game, this will be great if we can organize it well... Everyone's got to badger the hotel staff so we can get a conference room or something, cause that would make it so much better... EVERYONE has to bring a Leaf jersey (if you own one).. :D

BTW - Woburn - Congrats on winning, it'll be great to see you guys down there...

Harrison 08-04-2003 14:50

Leaf Jersey is packed - as are the Leaf flags.

But I'm staying at the Holiday Inn Greenway Plaza!!! :(:(:(

Looks like I'll be finding a map and walking over to the Hyatt to watch the game with all the other Canucks...

Map anyone???
