IDs for Boarding Plane
Hey I just wanted to know what you guys are bringing for ID's just in case they ask for one when you try to board your flights.
I am taking a Non-Driver State Issued ID with me and a copy of my Birth Cft. If they "Terror warning" goes up another notch the airlines are sure to step-up security. |
I'll have my driver's license. I don't know if I'm bringing a copy of my birth certificate or not... do you think I should?
|
I wouldn't think a birth certificate is necessary if you have a government issued ID
|
passport should do for all. (if you have it)
|
I didn't think I would, and I did okay with just my driver's license last year.
|
In MN (I assume the same other places too), a school-issued ID is acceptable for anyone under 18. For those 18 and over, it has to be some form of government-issued ID, whether it be a driver's liscence or something else. A passport is overkill but would do in a pinch, whereas a birth certificate is nearly worthless (I would guess) as it doesn't have your picture on it.

In my expierience, if you're under 18 (sometimes 16), you don't need an ID... you just need to show that you're traveling with someone who does.
Even if you take your school ID and show it to them, well I've never had them put up a fuss about it. When you're going to have 20 kids all boarding at the same time with teachers, they're not going to bother all that much. Long story short: use a driver's permit or license. If you don't have one, you're probably too young for them to really care. If you want to be certain, take your school ID - I've never really had a problem with this. |
Passport + Drivers Liscence for me.
(I have brown hair in both those pics tho....now my hair is Blue...lol) |

Hehe if anyone wants to see a great drivers license foto...find me at nationals...
I have a 5 inch tall blue mohawk in my picture... thats me for a few years as far as the government is concerned:) |
-Non-drivers ID's
-Learners Permets -Drivers Licences -Passports -Any Government Issued ID Those are the guaranties. Here are the sometimes, so contact your airline. -School IDs |
a passport is definite overkill if you already have a permit/drivers license/ non-driver state ID. I've flown from NY to VA without any problems several times with just a drivers license recently. If you dont have one of those then a passport is probably your best bet, even if you are under 16, just incase. School IDs are not concidered legal ID anywhere except at the school that issued it. Of course, if you dont have either of those then bring anything you can to ID yourself with. A school ID paired with birth certificat/social security card should be fine, although with that many people together (assuming you have a good portio of your team going) it shouldnt be a big deal.
|
they like a drivers licence, though a student-id will do if you're under 18.
theoretically if you're under 18 they're not supposed to check for an ID, but if you look sufficiently old they'll ask you for one anyway. |
Yeah, you should definately bring 2 government issued ID's with you. Your School ID does count as a government issued ID, so bring that with. Then bring either you drivers liscense, state ID, passport, or birth certificate.

You do have to Identify yourself, if your under 18 (as stated earlier in this thread) you just need to prove you are traveling with someone over 18 (they vouch for you). If your over 18 you do need a government issued ID. I suggest everyone brings ID anyways, its much easier to just prove your own identify and be done with it. Quote:

I personally have a DoD ID, that im bringing with me, i can go anywhere with that. Also, to my understanding a School ID is not considered a goverenment issused ID, but if you are underage and traveling with you school it might do- if you plan to do this do not take my word for it, check it out for yourself.

Bieng from Houston and going to school in Lubbock i have to fly in and out of Houston's Hobby Airport alot.
Recently flying in and out of Houston's Hobby Airport ive only had to show my id when checking in my bags and at the x-ray/metal detectors. A state issued Driver's Licesnse or ID card with a picture is sufficient. I think that birthcertificate would be overkill. If you are worried about security the be more worried about setting of the metal detectors or having someting in your bags that the security guys dont like. Deal is with the metal detectors is if you set it off, they immediately take you aside, sit you down and make you take off your shoes and they will manually scan you. They wont let you take things out of your pockets or whatever and try again. This will take forever if you are in a large group if everyone sets it off. If you have any laptops or cell phones, make sure the batteries are charged or you can turn it on. Many times if you have any of these, they will make you turn it on and change the sceen. If you cant do that then they wont let you take things on. My friend living across the hall from me had to leave his PS2 in Dallas with his parents because he forgot the powercable and couldnt turn it on. |
In the times I have traveled when I was under 16 they did not request an ID, and on year when I was 16 the school ID worked because I did not have a driver's license.
|
Do you think it will make a difference if you look arib or have a Middle Eastern Last name?
Its not that I look arib, but my last name is arminian |
is a YMCA id ok?
|
they tend more to judge based on looks than names. I have one of the most benign names in existance, but if I dress with baggy pants and spike my hair, they tend to pull me aside (in taiwan, anyway)
and it's really odd. I managed to make it past the security checkpoint with a pocketknife in SJC, but not in Denver. (didn't realized i brought it until they caught it in denver) and in SJC, they took my computer out, wiped off a sample with a pad and scanned it, but they only made me turn it on in denver. ::shrug:: |
Yeah security is an intersting deal these days.
Flying to nationals last year I was preselected in the computer to be screened both leaving Lubbock and going back. In lubbock the lady at the secuity counter opened my bags and stuck her hand down the sides and then cleared me. Then at the gate they did another metal detector scan and then looked in my bag. In Orlando at check in my bag was brought to this area where they took out everythign in your bags you were going to check. This took a while becuase i pack alot into one bag. Then i had to guide the dude how to put everything back in so everything would fit. During the whole time. I wasnt alowed to touch anything of mine. After everything was federalized security in Lubbock seems more strict than in Houston. Flying home from spring break i noticed they got new x-ray machines. while Houston Hobby Airport had the same old ones they always had. Actually in Lubbock at the baggage counter nor at the gate they didnt ask for my ID. The only time I had to show it was at the security checkpoint. In Houston Hobby the only time i had to show my ID was at the curbside baggage check in. At the security checkpoint and at the gate my boarding pass was good enough. In that case get your boarding pass at one of the automated Kiosks which you can use if you have a frequent flier card and dont need to check in any baggage, you may be able to fly without showing your ID at all. |
We contacted Continental directly for this question. It's quite simple, A state issued drivers license, or school issued photo ID were both acceptable. We were told that if a student was under the age of 16 and did not have an ID that would also be fine because they are traveling with a school group. We are advising our students to pack very lightly especially their carry on luggage. That is where they are the most picky, and we don't want any delays at check in.
|
Team 1011 also contacted Continental directly because of the yougness of our team and because the teachers and a few students are from Turkey.

About the ids they told us that if students could get school ids it would be fine but a copy of their birth certificate would also do as long as the teacher vouched for them. They did tell us that we should have them though. I wouldn't worry about bringing more than one because when teams check in they usually just look to make sure everyone has an id. Last year they didn't even look at my pic or name! |
Just FYI, if you are under 18, you do not need a government issued ID. Any photo ID, whether it is a school ID or a Disneyland Annual Passport, is okay. However, if you are over 18, you do need either a Driver's Licence, Passport, or non-driver ID (which you can get at your local DMV, RMV, etc. for around $20).
|
Technically, if you are under 16, you do not need a government ID, as was said before, if you are travelling with somoeone else. However, due to recent security concerns, it's a good idea for everyone to have one anyway, just to avoid the hassle. If you don't already have a license or a learner's permit with a picture (i don't know if all states have started making them just like licenses, with pics and everything, but i know indiana has), a non-driver's ID can be obtained from your local license bureau. I think in Indiana it's like 12 or 14 dollars (I know its gone up from the $10 I paid when I got my license 2 years ago. To get just an ID, you usually just have to prove your identity, usually through birth certificate and/or social security card, and your address. Documentation needed varies, but if you call your license branch, they will tell you what you need, and then, depending on length of lines, it only takes a few minutes.
All Team Hammond students were required by the team to obtain an ID, and if you think about it, it's worth it, because you never know when you are going to need to be able it, whether to cash a check, for a job, or whatever. Bottom line -- get the IDs. Better to have it than have to deal with MAJOR issues at the airport.:yikes: |
Yeah got to love the trips out of the country last year. Since I went to London last year I had to get a passport so that will be my ID since I am to young to get a license yet.

what you actually need...
I just flew from the east coast to the west coast and then from San Jose to LA, the type of ID you have to have is a form of photo ID that has your birth date on it as well as your name. The best thing to have is a government issue ID but if you don't have that you can use something else as long as it has the birth date on it. Your birth certificate is useless because there is no photo on it likewise your school ID is useless because most don't have a birth date on them. In most states you can get a photo ID card at your local DMV (or similar institution) that is not a driver's license and can be used for boarding. when you get to the airport just put it in your pocket where you can easily reach it because it will be checked at least twice. Also if you are flying from a large airport you will most likely have to remove your shoes when you go through the medal detectors. I had to when going from VA to CA but not from Oakland to LA. Hope that helps. See you guys in Houston!

FYI, its probably a good idea to take two IDs if u have them...a girl on our team lost her license last year...it wasn't good ;)

The US Customs when flying from Toronto to Detroit were definitely the biggest pain - But even then it wasn't a very big deal...mostly "Whats in your bag?" type stuff. I am not expecting any problems (or smelly feet ;)) at the airports flying down to Houston - Just make sure you have some Government issued photo ID (passports always work). Just think, this time tomorrow we'll be in Houston...YAY!!! |
From my recent experences is that they do make you take off your shoes if you set off the metal detector. You get ONE shot to walk through without setting it off. If you pass, then you wont have to, if you dont they will take you aside and manually scan you and in this manual scan, they make you take off your shoes.
Now I dont know what you would have to do if you were randomly selected to get searced at the gate, or someone just walks up to you and wants to search you, but thats my recent experences with flying, and flying in and out of the Houston airports. |
A lot of shoes have metal shanks in them for rigidity which sets off the metal detector.
Clothing Advice You need one photo id. I could not find a defintion of 'photo id'. Access Requirements To get the offical word, check the TSA website for travlers. That swab was run through a Explosives Trace Detection machine, "ETDs work by collecting samples and detecting vapors and residues of explosives. The human operators collect samples by using swabs to rub different areas of the bags. Swabs are then dropped into chemical analyzers that separate and identify any threat explosives present in less than 10 seconds. ETDs are characterized by small weight and size, and relatively low cost (about $40,000 each). " Wetzel ~~~~~~~~~ www.tsa.gov |

I had my laptop done at Long Beach on the way home from the LA regional. Wipe a thing across the screen, the back, bottom and keyboard, insert swab into machine..few seconds later I was good to go. If I recall correctly, a Ion Track Itemiser was used. Boeing Products Wetzel ~~~~~~ dootdoot |
why do the swab laptops?? doesn't make sense...
|
It has to do with the way things look in an xray. I think it is the battery, they went though my other bag and found my spare AA batteries, then said I could go.

Last year going to nationals I had ma CD player w/ headphones in a small shoulder bag inside my carry on, and also I had a pair of drumsticks. They just swabbed my bag and let me go. The reason is I assume that they way they were positioned it looked like a bomb.
|
the entire situation is still iffy in my experience.. flying down from toronto to LA this summer (15, no parents or guardians accompanying) i had to check my CD player into my regular baggage because it wouldnt work when i was going through customs in pearson.. but on the way back they didnt care.. though i did have to take my shoes off on the way back
it still seems incredibly subjective right now |
