Andy Baker Wins the Woodie Flowers Award!

I think if any of you in the FIRST community have ever met Andy Baker, you'd know that he is one of the most giving, inspiring, and wonderful individuals involved with FIRST. He deserved this award very much, and I know as a mentor I'm proud to say that I know him. Andy has helped countless teams, especially ones in Indiana. Because of his help and collaboration with other teams, we have events like the IRI, the Kokomo Kickoff, the Indiana workshop every year, etc. He truly exemplifies the meanings of FIRST and we are surely lucky to have him in the program.

Congratulations to Andy Baker!

Dbell5555 12-04-2003 19:37

Congradulations Andy!!

What better man than Andy to win this awesome award! I had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with Andy several times and I full heartedly agree with FIRST's decision. Andy is one of the BEST mentors in FIRST and he truly deserved this recognition.

Congrats Andy!!

Our team was watching together at our "Future Academy", the tech center at our school. When Andy's name was announced I happily said, "I know him!" *chuckle* I know him from Delphi. So glad to hear a familiar name. We have a student who's posting on Delphi, and another lurker student who said she LOVES these forums. Wonderful way to become familiar with names across the nation.

Congrats from our team to you Andy.

Wetzel 12-04-2003 20:02

Wooooo!
Hurray for Baker!

I shall meet him one of these days.

Congrats from Team 1020!

Andy,

I wasn't the least bit surprised to see you get the Woodie Flowers Award. On behalf a team #1020, the Indiana Prank Monkeys, I would like to congratulate you. Your help in St. Louis and your tireless dedication to the spirit, purpose and joy of F.I.R.S.T. is worth so much more to us than the cool twisted metal.

Matt Lundberg 12-04-2003 22:21

Congrats Andy! Glad to see you finally got it.

David Kelly 12-04-2003 23:57

If it couldnt be somebody on our team, I dont now a better person in FIRST that this award could have gone to. You are not afraid to give teams advise and dont even hesitate to help another. Andy, you are a great guy and I cannot see FIRST without you (that means you are NOT allowed to leave FIRST :p). When you came down to get your award and you were on the field and I was standing on the field by the scorers table and started yelling you name to get your attention, but you obvously I didnt get your attention. The guys sitting behind me asked why I started yelling your name. I said "thats the great Andy Baker!" They didnt have a clue who you were :yikes: I watched D.J. give you a hug and everybody did an "awwwweeeee". It also look liked you had a few tears in your eyes. hehe, its alright. :)

2 Indiana teams have now had their engineers awarded with this award. First Mr. Beatty in 2001 and now Andy Baker in 2003.

Once again, Congratulations Andy!!! :]

Jeff Waegelin 13-04-2003 00:59

Congrats! You deserve it, Andy. With all the hard work you put in, you definitely deserve that award. I was looking for you to congratulate you in person, but I couldn't find you. Anyways, when I heard them start talking, I immediately thought of you. I can't see anyone better to receive this award. Congratulations!

MrsT 13-04-2003 03:18

I lurked by the 45 pits twice Sat AM with the intention of introducing myself to Andy Baker, "the CD poster that ALWAYS spouts wisdom and is the voice of reason"!

Chickened out both times! My loss.

Congratulations Andy.

Raul 14-04-2003 10:02

Congratulations Andy!

Ever since our first alliance in 1999, I have been very impressed with the way you represent the ideals of FIRST. It would be hard for me to list all the great things that you have done that I have witnessed. DJ obviously did a great job of this and I'm sure he has witnessed many more. It would be great to see the submission posted in the white paper section so everyone can appreciate all that you have done, not just for your team, but for the FIRST community.

Hope to see you again soon.

Kyle Hughes 14-04-2003 10:02

You're fantastic!

Andy -

Live it up! :D Winning this award is a once in a lifetime experience. I remembered feeling like an instant hero in one day. A celebrity in the lives of mathematics, science and technology! It is toooooo cooooool!

Absorb every minute. Write down your thoughts - keep them for a "rainy day", for this is truly the greatest experience and you need to remember it forever!

Andy, I am so proud of you! ;)

Congrats to Andy B for winning and DJ for putting it all together!

WOW!

Mike Soukup 14-04-2003 12:12

Let me join in the long list of people congratulating you Andy. This thread alone should be a sign that you are more than deserving of the award. You have touched and inspired so many people, including me. I look at your team as an example and a model for all FIRST teams. I constantly wonder why we can't be more like the Technokats. You are the reason team 45 and many of the other Indiana teams are so successful. I strive to be as good a mentor as you are. See you soon, and don't be surprised if I call or email you for advice this summer.

As a few others have said, this means you can never quit FIRST :D

Christina47 14-04-2003 12:41

congrats andy. deserved it. =)

Kit Gerhart 14-04-2003 12:54

I had the chance to congratulate Andy when his winning of the Woodie Flowers award was announced, but want to congratulate him here as well. Andy has done so much to make TechnoKats what the team is today. He joined the team in 1998. and those who were around at the time know that the previous few years were not good ones for our team. Andy's various skills, including engineering, game strategy, and coaching helped us win the Championship in '98. There were others, to be sure, including Mark Coors who designed the arm on the machine, and Tim Railey, the team's lead teacher since 1992. Also we had an awesome driver and equally awesome button pusher, and many other people too numerous to mention who contributed to our success in '98. Still, Andy was one of the most important people in our competition success in '98 and subsequent years, and Andy may well have done more to "bring the team together" than any other person after some not-so-good years for our team.

Since then, Andy has turned TechnoKats in a team known throughout the FIRST community for helping other teams. He publishes our designs, gives away spare parts to other teams who need them, and helps new teams get started, and not just those near Kokomo, Indiana. Also, on a number of occasions he has been seen in other teams' pits helping them fix their robots when they need and want help. Andy is responsible for Kokomo's remote kickoff, and the list of his contributions to the FIRST community goes on.

Andy, you deserved it, and DJ Fluck deserves lots of credit for presenting Andy's case well enough to win out over all those other good candidates whose cases were presented in that pile of letters the judges had to go through.

Ellery 14-04-2003 13:06

All you!

Andy,

On behalf of the Xerox FIRST community and the Rochester FIRST Coalition I'd like to Congratualte you on your Woodie Flower's Award. You have definitley been a major contributor to the FIRST community for all these years and a great guy in general.

Andy,

As I said on Saturday, I will say it now: There is no one more deserving of this award than you. You are what this world needs: a hero kids of all ages and backgrounds can look up to.

I am a better person today than before I met you, because of how you touched my life. I thank-you and a great big congratulations.

Your Friend,

P.S. - Did anyone else notice Andy wearing the Thunderchicken hat as he went up for the award?

Congrats! I know I've had a chance to talk with you a few times already, but I must say it again. You have truly touched my life and I have become a better person because I know you. You are a true inspiration as an engineer, man and human being. You already won many years ago by making an impact. Now that impact has grown to the people who have posted here and to many other's who will benefit from all we have learned. You deserve this.

Congratulations!

Thank you! My intent is not only for me to get to know Andy better, but our students, parents and mentors too. When I see a particularly pertinent wonderful post, I put the link in our team email, and it's inspiring, I think, new lurkers and new cd members.

Holy cow you must really deserve this! LOOK at all the people in line to say WAY TO GO ANDY!!!

You are the shining example of what makes FIRST such a great place to be. I hope you are thrilled with all the love in here, cuz its real.

And you can SING? Amazing....

I'm proud to know you,

Mark Pierce 14-04-2003 21:17

Congrats also Andy

Some of the TechnoKat adults joined me as I finished my meal at the team party. Since I basically only know Andy from the forums I didn't realize it was him sitting across from me at first. He then proceeded to spread credit for his successes to those around him who allow him to do all he does for all of us.

Maybe someday they will put up a big TechnoKats sign next to that Delphi sign. If so, it will be largely due to you and your efforts. I gather from this thread and others that if it's the team that makes what you do possible, you continue to inspire them to do it. Congratulations again and I hope next time I have a chance to talk longer with you.

Jeff Sharpe 14-04-2003 21:47

Andy - I wanted to congratulate you in person, but we left fifteen minutes after closing ceremonies were over. Ah, well. Anyway, awesome job! I've been wondering since my freshman year when you were going to win that award. :) You are exactly the type of person FIRST needs. Keep up the great work! You rock! :D

Carolyn Duncan 16-04-2003 17:20

More than Congratulations and you deserve this I want to say this to you Andy, Thank you. Thank you for being exactly what FIRST is all about. I can't imagine not having ever spoken with you or meeting you. You are the example I have given whenever anyone asks me what FIRST is all about. You give everything you have and then some more. I can only hope to be half the inspiration to others that you have been to me. So again I say thank you. To your wife as well for putting up with all that you do for all of us I give an even bigger thanks. I knew the award was yours before it was even mentioned that's why it was so fun when I got to attack you in the pits afterwords.

John Prather 16-04-2003 19:05

Congratulations Andy!!!!!!

For the three years I have been in FIRST, I have heard your name come up many times and more. I have even had the chance to talk to you a few times. You have helped out all of the FIRST teams in many unexplainable ways, and it is appreciated greatly. You live according to FIRST. You have been a great influence to many, and I congratulate you and wish you well in the future!!!!!!
