"Heeeyyyyyyy!!"

I have no idea what team started the whole "Hey!" thing, but I think it's great.
Walking around Six Flags on Saturday, you see any team and go "Heyyy!" and they go "Heyyy!" back. And another team close by hears you and goes "Heyyy!" as well, so you of course have to respond...It could go on forever. It was awesome.
Maybe it was just me, but I think that was among the funnest things about Houston.

Rob Colatutto 13-04-2003 18:32

everyone did it last year at epcot, i dunno what year it started but it was a lot bigger last year than this year

Andrew Rudolph 13-04-2003 18:35

yeah we had a whole thread on it last year, at epcot leaving the team party a few were making fun of some guy who was trying to get someones attention and yelled eeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyy!! then like 400 people said it back the rest is history....i wonder if that guy ever got that persons attention....

Alaina 13-04-2003 18:42

Really? Hmm...None of my team mates ever tell me anything about previous years (it's my first year).
I mean, 814 was at nats last year, they could have said "Yeah, there was a 'hey' thing going on last year too" but nooo...just leave Alaina to be naive and clueless...

IsabelRinging 13-04-2003 18:43

Yeah, it started last year.

It's actually an "ehhhhhh"... they were originally making fun of the Canadians.

It kind of morphed into a Fonzie-esque "ayyyyyyyy" and even a "heeeeey", but now you all know the truth. :D

Ah, it's all clear to me now. :D

moogleslair 13-04-2003 19:09

This has to be the closest thing to an urban legend that FIRST has. Everyone has their own version of this story. Everyone claims to have started it, or that it is eh, hey, yay, ayy etc. I know for my team we used to say "hey" 3 years ago at universal city walk when we went over on the weekends. When we got to nats that year we decided to bring it along. We have pushed it every year since. Truth is it is simple enough of a joke that i'm sure it has been around as long or longer than most of us to be alive. The important thing is everyone has fun with it.

Making fun of us!??? We thought they were trying to fit in :( (:D) I remember it being really big when after the team party at Epcot, when everyone was waiting in line for the buses... :D

pauluffel 13-04-2003 20:17

I remember taking part in the "ehhhhhhh" last year while we were waiting for the "boos," and at least we didn't have to pay a "dole-er" to get on them. (The guy who started my rookie team last year was from Canadia, so we had fun mocking his pronunciations.)

J Flex 188 13-04-2003 20:31

lol exactly.. no matter where you trace it back to, its the canadians : P

eh!!!!!

Matt Attallah 13-04-2003 20:52

eeeeeehhhhhhhhh!

LOL! We also did that (team 5)! Cool and fun!

Yan Wang 13-04-2003 20:54

nay an idea what they're talkin aboot, eh?

jonathan lall 13-04-2003 21:32

If anyone puts 'Eh' and 'Y'all' in the same sentence, I'll know FIRST is having some strange effects on culture...

D.J. Fluck 13-04-2003 21:38

Heh our head teacher said that he can remember that going on as far back as 1998 ;)

heh this teacher has been on our team for a few years...since um 1992....

Amanda Morrison 13-04-2003 21:58

I know last year a bunch of teams at the MMR did that... No clue where it started, but we kept the tradition going.

moogleslair 14-04-2003 00:04

my favorite is when we threw up a "heeeyyy" and we got a "hooooo" back

Chris Nowak 14-04-2003 00:21

yeah on every roller coaster a six flags, on every drop, we got most of the people on the coaster yelling "Heyyyyyy!". It was cool, especially on the wooden one with about 12 drops.

tenfour 14-04-2003 00:44

We didn't start it...we just killed it!!

activemx 14-04-2003 00:51

HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.......SHuttupppp....haha jk...

Yea it was good for a while.. but later it started to piss me off. Speically at six flags.. were every other person used to yell..
Good Times!

You're all wrong. It isn't "heyyyyyyyyy", or "ayyyyyyyy", or "ehhhhhhhh". it's

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I wasn't on the team yet, but this thread was here last year and mike explained the story: (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...&threadid=3975)

Quote:

Yes, 862 was the team which started the "AAAA!!!" chant (and yes it is the letter A and not Hey but its all good). We actually started this last year at the Great Lakes Regional. At the time we were team 465 ( we lost our sponsor this year and found visteon along with a new number, 862). If anyone was there they might rember that. A team had a beach ball and various things that they were throwing out into the crowd. We started shouting "AAAA!" to get their attention. It worked and a phenomenon was started. We did this all through nationals last year and continued the tradition this year at the Western Michigan and Great Lakes regionals, and of course, Nationals. We actually concidered changing our name to The "A" Team but it got shot down. Many people who stopped by our pit (*cough* 128 *cough*) may have seen our "AAA!!" sign and our "AAA!" buttons, one of which had mr. t pittying fools who didn't say "AAA!!". So that is the history of "AAA!". Hope you enjoyed the story and will spread the truth throughout the community of first.

tatsak42 14-04-2003 05:53

I just remember that coming out of Epcot last year after the fireworks that in the mob I was in, nobody was doing it until two of my teammates saw another team they knew and yelled hey and it kept going for... oh, a long time. :D

Good, set them right, I hate when people would say WHY DO YOU SAY THAT ITS NOT YOURS... that happened at great lakes this year... bah...

GIMMIE AN A.. GIMMIE AN A.. GIMMIE AN A.. WHATS THAT SPELL!? AAAAAAAAAAa

evulish 14-04-2003 15:37

I got my team into doing the whole 'Hey' thing at Epcot last year. I thought I had started the entire thing...but I guess yelling 'hey' isn't all that original :P

(At Six Flags...there was the pirate ship that went upside down...I started chanting 'up Chuck' which was an old chant for our robot 5 years ago...hehe)

ngreen 14-04-2003 19:18

Did anyone ride the "greezed lightning" when they made you say "to infinity and beyond" when they were hitting the all clear?

Suike 14-04-2003 19:27

Well in line for the Batman stand-up coaster (crap) our driver, Jason, and I started the "wave" and had it going through the line and around corners and all... it was pretty neat... and then there was of course the "Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey!" in the ramps leading to and from the Astrodome and all... yea... just thought I'd post this for no apparent reason...

Jupee 14-04-2003 19:44

I personally enjoyed the big ol' "Tally-ho!" during each Galileo match :)

My friends all made fun of my today b/c I apparently picked up a Chicago/Michigan accent cuz I hung out with those ppl tooooo much in Houston!! All that Wildstang tie-dye had some crazy effect on me...;)

Etbitmydog 14-04-2003 19:47

haha. back in the day(99) we started the Wooo . It cought on but only for that year.

xavior06 14-04-2003 20:00

i think it is ehhhhh caus 2 years ago at epcot one of our members was canadian, and we went through an entire discussion on what eh meant, so we said eh to everyone we saw in the parks on the last day.

and did anyone hear the WOOO WHOOOOOOooPs?(and drawn out "wah waH wAH WAH" (increasing in speed and volume as you go) our team and a guy from 225 (i think) were doing it at JnJ and Nats. specially in the long halls to and from the arena.

o yea and we didnt have the speakers or lights on our cart this year so we made our own techno with our voices, like spit noises, clapping ect. on the way to our matches.

comet22 14-04-2003 20:17

we were one of the original starters of the eh.... back then it was eh as in canada.... you can often hear our team yell canada also... although we are not from canada it is an inside joke because everyone thinks we are, our school district being called West Ottawa and all. Anyways, yeah that was a blast..

Gadget470 14-04-2003 20:25

Great Lakes was good this year, and yes, it is Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

During the Visteon pictures (all teams sponsored by Visteon at GLR got pictures together)....

Everyone: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
470: Oooooooooooooooooooooo
(We are Alpha Omega, or AO) Then for the rest of the pictures all of us were yelling Aaaaaaaaaa Oooooooooo.. good times.

According to people on my team, they started it. Making fun of another member who would always mutter "ehhhh" then it developed from there.. who knows, not me.

xavior06 14-04-2003 20:29

prolly combo of everything, no way one person could ever start something like that

scuba_sm 14-04-2003 20:43

I'm not sure who started it, and my team has already made their claim, but even if we didn't start it, we sure did take it to an extreme last year. It really got out of hand at Epcot last year. Anybody who saw us would yell AAAA! and of course, we'd have to yell back louder. At Great Lakes last year, our team even managed to drown out a drum corp. With voices. And we are NOT a big team. If you remember the busses at Epcot, that was us. If you rode the monorail for any length of time, you ran into us, with our corny jokes, box full of buttons, cheers and flags. Good Times.
Our team got yelled at by one of the buss drivers for being "too loud" (Is there really such a thing?). Team Rush has taken to using AAAAAA as a running joke in their team, or so we have been told. Unfortuneatly, we didn't have quite as much volume this year, with all our officers of last year leaving. But, I don't care who does it, just so long as it continues.......

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jon 14-04-2003 21:21

BBBBBBBBB?

cbudrecki 14-04-2003 21:53

I and a few other of my teammates tried getting some good "AAAAAAAAAAA"s out of people leaving 6Flags. Some groups responded quite well, others just gave us weird looks. I'm quite disappointed that I never got that 'verbal wave' going at the stadium. It would have been pretty neat hearing "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" echoing all throughout Nats.

Alaina 14-04-2003 22:12

I really don't think it matters if it's "Aaaa," "Heyyy," or "Eeehhhh."

The point is: The culture of FIRST is the most fun, interactive, wonderful culture there is. I wish I could get as emotional as that girl from 159 did about it. :p

Yup. It went something like this:

RO: Okay, at the count of three, everyone say "To Infinity and Beyond!" 1... 2... 3...

[silence]

RO: 3!

[cricket's chirping]

RO: Come one everyone -- "To Infinity and Beyond!"

[tumbleweed rolls by]

Someone: Heyyyyyyyyyyy!

The RO finally gave up and launched us.

On another note, I was one of 3 members of 190 who were on the morning plane with Team 125, and I tried to start a "Heyyyyyyy" when the captain made the announcement about them, but no one responded, and I just looked like an idiot. Oh well.

We were talking to some of 783's members (they're Canadian), and some of our team was making fun of them. Someone yelled out "eh," and then everyone else began. Then, someone on 783 (don't remember who) yelled out "B?" They got to "F," and then complained that the "Imperial Alphabet" was confusing them. Good times in Houston.

MissAbi 15-04-2003 14:16

I always associated "AAAAAAA" with our sister Visteon team, 862, (good times at GLR) So it was kinda weird saying it in Houston without them. Felt like I was cheating on them. Sorry guys.

Pin Man 15-04-2003 15:36

I'm not sure who exactly started but I remember we did it the most last year... We didn't hear any other teams do it(last year that is)... It started with us and Rocky(203) last year in New Jersey(at Rutgers)... We use to say it to teammates, then the Rocky mascot, and then just other teams... and it's "EH" (Canadian)...

Aaron Lussier 15-04-2003 16:14

Actually your all wrong, It was me that Started the whole Ayyyyyyy thing, Way back in 1984 when I was born, In califorina, I called Dean Kamen and was like ,Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy in to the phone, and then he did it back, and that gave him the idea for FIRST, so yea it was all me...

(The above is completly false and is just poking fun at the people who say they started, becasue we will never know where it came from, so stop trying to say you started it)

Adam Y. 15-04-2003 16:37

Ackkk Im scared
Im reading this thread and I am thinking to myself," Hmmm It sounds like my friend Will but he is not in robotics. Isn't that creepy?" Then when I read "good times" I think to myself,"Thats even scarier he says that all the time. It has to be from a show."
Its really funny since he also has quite a few people he knows doing it including myself.
:p

I think it came from a movie or show. It just goes to show you that all smart geeky people are physic because we all come up with the same corny jokes.

lmao. That's hella funny.

I sort of agree with you there. I mean, HOW many people have claimed they have started it? What if 20 completely different teams thought it up on their own?? And then everyone else just caught on at Nats?? I really doubt we'll ever find out for sure!

Alex Forest 15-04-2003 18:52

We discovered that this was a great way to keep people off the elevator when we were trying to get to the lobby in the hotel. There were so many people staying there taht we stopped at every single floor in between ours and the lobby. Since of course the elevator was packed becuz our whole team decided to wait until the last minute to go down there, as we reached each floor and the doors opened the poor unsuspecting people heard a loud "AAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!!!!!" hehe.

I feel sorry for the poor nonFIRSTers who sometimes were jammed into the corners of our elevators.

Chubtoad 15-04-2003 19:21

The first time i encountered the "Ehhhhhh" beast, was at nationals in 2000. That was the year of the "Wasssaahhh!!" commericals during the superbowl. Somebody on our team brought his ibook wth all those commercials on it and we watched them as we got to the hotel room the wednesday of nationals. Take in mind this was before the commercials really became popular. So we had walkie talkies and in the parks and around the pits we were always screaming WAAASSAAHHH!!! and even re-enacting the whole commericals at times. At some point in Disney we screamed WASSSAHHH and the response was EHHHHHH!!!!! so we adopted that after the WASSSAHH became too popular around NORMAL PEOPLE (non-firsters)

My team this year adopted the EHHHHOOOOOOOO. This would be from Don Hertzfeldt's cartoon "Rejected" at Annapolis and LI whenever our team was called for a match, everyone on the TEAM would go EEEEHHHOOOOO!!!!, we called it the Marauder Cry, however it as defintly a kung-foo call

and then at Six Flags when that free-fall ride would come down while we were all waiting to get in... WOW... EYYYYY!! EHHHH!!!! OOOOO! AHHHHH!!!! EEEEHHHOOO!!!!

Kevin A 15-04-2003 19:49

some many beginings to the ehh thing...ehh?

i thought 481 started it by yelling ehh to a team we mentored
