Play of the Year
 

I'm starting this thread so that people can look back on this year's many competitions and pick out the one moment that stands out as being the best "play" of the year. What I mean is, is there one thing that a team or robot did durring a match that really struck you as being outstanding. (This can be something they did to help themselves, a teammate, an opponent, or maybe something that their robot was able to pull off).

I personally can't think of one thing in particular (the 18 hour drive back from Houston has fried my brain) but I'm sure that there are plenty of outstanding stories out there to be told.:D

I think one of the coolest things I saw this year was someone making a stack 7 high with their robot on Newton at Nationals. Didn't think I would see one that big this year.

My favorite thing my team did was grabbing a three stack from the grey area and moving it back in our scoring area to win in a close match.

While maybe not the play of the year, seeing our alliance mate topple forward, then stop, then get righted by the arm on our robot was a thrilling site during the qualifying rounds :)

I'd say for me it was in Pittsburgh when the Mad Cow robot climbed on top of our robot and kept driving...and Mimi and I thought we were completely wiped out and then we won the round with 252 points and nothing happened to our robot...it went from tears of fear to tears of joy

My play of the year goes to 292, PantherTech


At the midwest regional in finals match 1, huskie brigade (65) tried ending the match by locking down on the ice...292 came up and started ramming into them and as they kept ramming, 65 kept sliding....they got to the edge of the ramp and with a tiny little push of 292 from us our allience got 65 onto the ramp and they had to regroup. That 292 push saved the match and eventually won them the regional

my teams robot flipping back and uses its arm to grip/push against the mesh to stop 19 from getting on top of the ramp. nothing like holding the ramp on your back. :D!

From other teams.... it was just a blast to see MOE play. I love you're box flipper. I don't care if you can stack, that thing made my day!!!

My play of the year:

Canada QuarterFinal 3.2:

In the first match, 639 put out 783 and we won but by a close amount because our stack was pushed out with < 2 seconds left. 62-14 (that's EPs).

So in 2nd match (QF3.2) we put out 783 and 314 because they were both better pushers. No one hit the stack in auto and then when human control came, 314 went up the ramp slowly in high gear, AND GOT FLIPPED on the ramp.

The stadium and mostly our alliance went nuts. However, 783 moved some bins, knocked some stacks over, and got some of the wall over and THEN, pushed 314 on top of the ramp upside down.

This drove us nuts along with everyone watching.

Then an opponent pushed 314 off but 314 got caught on the ramp on the other side and the opponent almost flipped themselves from the wedging.

314 miraculously flipped over and got to the top WITH 783 to win.

Regardless of team or alliance, that pretty much had the entire stadium going nuts.

(Btw, second place for 'match of the year' goes to the last match at Chesapeake with MOE.)

You beat me to it. That Mobotics match was what I had in mind. What a play!

The match in Phoenix and the one in LA where 696 flipped both of their opponents. But, the best I'd say was the last match of the LA regional when 696 was dead for nearly the last 20 secs and then with .5 second left rushed up the ramp to push off the opponent and get on top. That was such a nice move.

I should also nominate 188's last match (Curie QF). It involved a stack of six defence strategy in desperation to catch up with the deficit from the first match. The stack at the last second was almost tipped over, and on the way, a robot was totalled by 188 and a limbo bar, and a flipping occured. If our alliance hadn't been DQ'ed for driving into and flipping the opposing robot, it'd have been an amazing come-from-behind victory for us.

As for the 783 play, I would really like to see it from a fixed camera with sound. That would be really interesting. On another note, I and my teammates, are in that video linked to. Where's Waldo?

356 used their wedge to right fallen comrade, 525, at the St. Louis regional.

My personal fav involves our robot (302) during a semfinals match in the newton division. Panthertech (292) had gotten flipped over in the match while trying to climb up the ramp. My team drove under their robot, lifted our front wedge, backed off a little and then hit it forward. We flipped them back up and eventually won that match, it was a great feeling.

I'd really like to see a more exciting/intense match that the QF in Canada with Mo in it. I screamed sooo much after we won that match after it started off looking so badly. Incredible stuff.

my fav match was when the aztechs (157) kept on getting flipped over in a few of their matches. but using their very strong arm, were able to right themselves multiple times over the cvourse of one match. congrats aztechs!!

during the quarterfinals of Galileo a team (I cannot remember the number) was on top of the HDPE along with their partner. 45 and 217 were waiting at the bottom and started up the ramp full speed. The robot 45 was going after came down and met them with a sudden shot that could be heard throughout the stadium. Unfortunately that one hit put the TechnoKats out of commission (sorry guys), but man what a hit.

At Pittsburgh Finals it was Athena and the Delphi E.L.I.T.E. robot against the Thunder Chickens and another team (i forgot which team). It ended up that the support bar on Delphi E.L.I.T.E. didnt work and they flipped over. We were unable to budge the Chicken Fingers from defending their stack so we went up used our convertable mast stacker and set Delphi E.L.I.T.E. back up. The game was the best match i watched during my three events, although we lost by only a few bins.

My favorite play form this year happened at the Central Florida Regional. I don't remember the team #s (someone help me out) but one of the robots was flipped in front of the ramp and their partner pushed them up to get the points and they wound up winning the match.

man..everyone on 188 who was watching it on the feed had their emotions go crazy.. personally..my feed cut out right after the match ended, and they announced there was a referee's meeting.. hooks back up, and the next match is one, with everyone on the site asking what the score was.. then 0-8 DQ'd for tipping.. man.. heartbreak.. especially after 781 almost tipped the stack over..! crazy match, but i will have to say, one of the best played.. brilliant strategy..

also.. i seem to recall at CR that someone was taping the entire thing at the second bowl, near where team 48 was sitting..

I saw that match firsthand too. I believe one of your robots had a wheel barely off the HDPE, which is why your alliance didn't win.

ooh....Team 74 has had some pretty lucky and crazy matches. Our last match, and actually the last match on Galileo, we thought we were going to do very well. However, we underestimated our opponents and we didnt understand the potential for clearing bins out that they had. At this point, we were the #1 seed in galileo, and if we had lost this match, we were almost guaranteed to lose that position. Well, as it worked out, almost all the bins get cleared out in about the first minute, and we couldnt really see if we were winning or losing in bins. We get on to the ramp with about 25 seconds remaining, and so do our opponents. Our partners, whoever they are, decide that instead of pushing our opponents off, they would push US off instead. So with about 5 seconds remaining, I'm touching the our partner and I am off the ramp. I about the last 3 seconds I manage to maneuver on to the ramp so we are on only 3 of our 4 wheels. We end up winning the match, 58 to 57. Just about the most intense 5 seconds of my life, I thought I would end up touching our partner and get us a big old 8 score for the match, which probably would have dropped us to the #3 or #4 seed ranking.

I thought that the most amazing play of the year was when 292 Panthertech and 302 were playing against 676 and 180 in the Newton Finals rnd. 1 and panthertech got flipped totally up-side down (wheels pointing towards the sky and top of their robot on a tote and the carpet) during autonomous mode. Then later in the match 302 came over, pushed panther tech right-side-up but only raised totally off of the field on top of totes, then they drove off of the totes and went on to win the match 45-2. Btw... also in that match right at the end one of their opponents accidently flipped their alliance partner!

I completely agree with Austin. When our robot flipped my heart skipped a few beats, literally. I thought we were done for. Turns out our good neighbors in the pits that we also chose to be our alliance partners had a pretty hefty wedge that had enough power to flip us upright. Kudos to 302, you guys have an awesome bot to be able to pull of something like that.

We kept getting the shaft at Pittsburgh when it came to close calls on being on the hill. It got annoying after a while, but you have to respect the ref's call (unfortunatly :D )

My favorite play was when in one match we where competing for king of the hill. Our alliance partner made it to the top as did we. With maybey 10 seconds left, an opponent bot tried to push off our alliance partner, and got caught on top of our ally. So my coach instructed me to give our opponent a little "tap", and so i did, and they flipped off of our alliance partner, and slid off the ramp for a bit. It was cool, funny, and difinately a rush.

PS: Sorry for what ever damage that may have caused.

Oh, can't forget when we held off two bots so that our ally could stack. AWESOME IDEA 868!!! (you guys did great)

To bad the ramp was broken...

Anyways, I liked the match before that when you were ramming one of the opponents with like 10 seconds left and kept ramming until you fit, but you were just barely touching the grating :-) It was a great finals.

The auto mode and last 30 seconds are ... well, you had to be there.

In Philly, we flipped 103 in autonomous mode. That itself surprised me. We never thought we had that kind of power, especially against a machine like that one. To top that, we then proceded to run 56 off the field 30 seconds later. That's probably the most dominating team 102 has ever been in my 3 years here. Props to teams 103 and 56 for being good sports about it. Nothing but love to ya guys! That'd have to be my favorite play of the year so far.

I thought that match was absolutely amazing, and I still can't believe the stack of 6 stood up.

My favorite play that happened to us was during a qualification match on the Galileo field, us and Truck Town Thunder were in a match against the Robonauts and 541. THe robonauts had this large KOH bot that was hard to get off the hill if it made it up there. A few inches from the hill T3 and Us started to push 118 as they went up the ramp and both of us flipped them over and shoved them all the way down the ramp. Our allience left their 4 stack in place and we squeaked a victory out with a score of 63-61

It was in Grand Rapids when Beatty's autonomous mode was supposed to do a Chuck Norris move and was stopped by team number 47 in there autonomous mode we hit there arm and it didn't finish and beatty sat there in awe. :ahh:

i believe i have a video of that play (brilliant) if anyone wants to see it.. or has space :D
