Interested in a Las Vegas, NV Regional?

Hey everyone - right now there are 10 teams in Nevada, and most definetly more next year (we plan to mentor a new FIRST team). Teams from Cali, Nev., and Ariz., would be the teams most likely to attend a Las Vegas regional. Does anyone think it could be done and are there any teams that would possibly be interested? If teams are interested, lets get FIRST to possibly do one. Keep in mind that Las Vegas always has cheap airfare and hotel rooms and is easily driven to from CA and AZ. The University of Nevada Las Vegas, has a great stadium that the event could be held at. There are also other stadiums in the hotels, such as the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Maybe MGM could sponsor it.... Thanks.

If you vote, please post and say why you voted the way you did and where you are from. thanks

Team 980 is interested in a Las Vegas Regional. We are based in S. Calif.

Looking back over the season, I really appreciate the Arizona Regional. We had 11 matches in the qualifying rounds and the organization of the event was excellent.

We would like to see more regionals like that, and Las Vegas could be it. Hopefully a regional in Nevada would not be back to back with the Arizona Regional.

We will also be looking at going to Sacramento next year.

A Las Vegas Regional would be really fun to go to. Las Vegas can be a rather cheap town for tourists. However, I am sure there is some reserve with the idea of bringing lots of high school students to "Sin City."

I am sure my team would give the Las Vegas Regional a chance if it was offered.

My family used to live in Vegas, My son's family is there still, we're in Redondo and our team would be delighted to go and we're rooting for Vegas teams cuz we want our grandkids to participate some day!

A regional in Vegas, my son's family would be there, lots of old friends would show up...

I voted "maybe", because despite how much i would luv to go to a regional in vegas, my mom...well, has other opinions. She told me that there is no way she would ever let me go to vegas, even if it was with robotics. EVEN IF SHE WENT WITH ME!! I think that may be one of the dilemas... parental consent.

It's a good idea, but I know my team would never go that far for a regional. I'm sure there would be no trouble getting enough teams there, though. Yes, Vegas does have negative connotations, but why not try to bring something inspiring and positive like FIRST?

I'm not sure FIRST would be enough to change people's minds about Vegas. A lot of the US..maybe even outside the US probably believes vegas is bad for teens.

When we had to move there about '90, I was scared. Researched it online. Learned before moving there and while living there that Vegas is MUCH more than the strip. There's a large normal suburban part to Vegas.

ps. I emailed other student team members to see if their parents would allow them to go.

Thanks Bree!

Well, of course it wouldn't be a major change. I'm just saying it would be nice to bring something like FIRST to Vegas.

*chuckle* the strip isn't all there is to Vegas, the strip doesn't need FIRST, Houston has a higher crime rate than Vegas and would "need" FIRST as much as Vegas does, the huge numbers of high schools in Vegas (10th largest school district in nation, isn't it?) would take to it like ducks to water.

I agree that in a way it could be a nice thing for vegas' reputation... unfortunately i don't think it would look very good on the part of FIRST to have it in a place such as vegas. I'm not trying to put down anyone's points of view, i'm just trying to look at the big picture. I like how you are so positive about it. it's a good way to be.;)

Actually were now the 6th largest in the country. Over 250,000 students. I think we could get a good turn out. We currently have 4 FIRST teams in town. Vegas isnt a horrible place by a long shot to live as a teen. Sorry, would post more, but im leaving for Cali real soon! i'll check while im there!

keep posting!

Wha? All those high schools, 10th largest school district, interested west coast teams, they'll eventually have a regional and I'm sure FIRST will "weather" the controversy.

you're probably right. Who knows... it COULD be a good thing!:yikes:
