Class of 2003 - Who is staying to mentor?
To all the Seniors out there:
Who is coming back next year to help their team? Who plans on starting a new team when they head off to college? I hope to be able to help my team next year and want to see what everybody else plans on doing... |
Still undecided. I won't come back to help my team (it's too far away), but I haven't decided if I'll be involved in FIRST next year or not.
|
I think I am. The proffessor for my major was a engineering consultant for my team so I will proably be back to help out. I'm sad that this is my last year. I'm really amazed at what FIRST has done. It's a great program and I wish I has been able to join as a freshman. Sadly my team is only in it's second year.
|
I don't think I will be back to help my team for a couple of years.. due to a team being closer to college. I will be going to PSU W-B.. and plan on working with 222 if they will have me... and perhaps coming back to my team in the future. Deffinately will be involved in FIRST for many years to come.

meow?
I plan on joining up with team 250 near my college (RPI in Troy New York right outside Albany) might try to see if there are other high schools around there to try and start a team with. Also since the first 2 weeks of build season are part of winter break will help a team here on Long Island, or maybe will work with some friends and help create another team here! every high school should have one!!
The major thing I think College bound FIRSTers should do is to pester the college to give scholarships through FIRST. That is the ONE thing I definetly want to do through RPI. |
Ill be back to help 151. i will only be 30-45 min away so it wont be too bad..

I won't be able to help the team on a regular basis, but I hope to go back and visit when I get a chance. If there's a FIRST team already established near the college, I'd love to go help out, but I think it's too big of a time commitment to start up a new team.

461 - Purdue
I'll be going to Purdue this fall, so if they let me be on the team I'll try. :D
|
On breaks I'll be helping 151, but while I'm at Wentworth I'll be walking down the street to help out with team 125 the Nutrons, out of northeastern University, plus theres more girls at Northeastern;)
|
I don't know exactly what I'll be doing, but I will be involved with FIRST in some way for sure.
How could I not be? |
I want to help start a new team near my future college, Kansas State. But with only one year experience in FIRST I might settle with helping my current team as much as possible. It is only a 2 hour drive. Our teams driver/welder is going to K-State so he might be able to help me.

I'll probably head over to 461, if they want another animator.

As for Mobotics, that really depends on Mr. Gerber. If he is willing to do it again next year (assuming he is still at Mowat), then there will be a team. I think the main thing for Mobotics is finding more students that are actually willing to put in the hours, as well as more teachers that are willing to actually help with supervision, etc.. Finding more financial support never hurts either. Right now, all we can really do is make sure that Gerbs is back again next year - Cause Mobotics might not have a future without him. |
I am going to be trying to start a team at the University of South Florida. Luckily my current team is only 45 minutes away so they will probably help mentor the new team.
|
I'll be helping my team as a mentor next year. I'm a senior and this was my first year in robotics so I still feel as if there is still something I have to give back.

There are TONS of HS's nearby needing a FIRST team. There is something in the works in which RPI may reestablish Team 20 (which turned into team 250). Time will tell what happens! IM me at: JNoon2 for more Capital District (NY) FIRST info. |
Im going to MSOE next year and joining up with team 1064 founded by Kevin (former driver from 71) and Lauren (former member of wildstang)....
All the FIRST secrets are gone when you put a 45, 71 and 111 alumnist on the same team... ;) |

Several members of the Baxter Bomb Squad are heading off to the University of Arkansas next year, all majoring in some form of engineering. We plan to hold off a year, and to start a team our sophmore year. That way we have the engineering knowledge to properly mentor a team.
|
In theory, my college (Carnegie Mellon) already has a team (1185), so I may try to join that. Otherwise, I'll be contacting FIRST to volunteer with the organization as a whole. After all, it just wouldn't be a proper January without a healthy dose of FIRST.
|
I'll be in town helping 461 next year...and probably helping some other teams around here too...
|
Unfortunately I wont be close enough to home to keep working with my team (267); however, I will be going up to Cornell next fall. Cornell sponsor's team 639 (Code Red Robotics). Hopefully I will be able to help them out in any way possible. If I don't continue with his competition, I swear I'll go through withdrawal and need counseling... ;)

FIRST fever is in the air
I will definitely be back to help out my favorite rookie team next year, 1089. I mean, I was the first FIRST girl at Hightstown, why would I want to relinquish that title? Not only that, I don't want to leave the team in the hands of Mr. Gregory and Erik alone...c'mon, this is Erik we're talking about! I'm sure they'll do a great job without me when I'm not around, but I plan to be there for all of build season and all our regionals next year.
Hopefully, I'll still have time to keep up the 1089 website and spend time with Erik designing next years t-shirts, in which we hope to present the purple monkey. I had forgotten how much fun and attaching FIRST could be. I guess you could say, I've got permanent FIRST fever. |
I'll be working with 1018 and/or 461 next year, I think...
|
I'm gonna go to Olin, and start a team! I've talked with the admin a bit, and they're excited about it. It's really sad, though, because i love 159! our mentors and teachers and students are just the greatest people! And, this year we're working really hard to start a regional in CO (with ColoradoFIRST and the other CO teams), and I won't be there to see it happen! :-(. But hopefully the team that we'll start at Olin will be really cool, too.
lauren ps. if there are any olinites that are interested in helping me start this, pm me, and we'll talk to the admin more and get them to give us money, and all kinds of stuff! rock on! |
Post-HS plans
Well, in my case it depends on which of college I pick... If I stay local and go to SU, I'll probably come back to my current team... If I go to St. Lawrence I don't have many options unless Clarkson'll take me....

I'm going off to Universal Technical Insitute (30 miles west of Chichago), so there are some teams around there. Starting a team while you are not there is very-very hard, so my 1st year i'll proally not start a team and just join one, but the 2nd year, i'll start one in a heart beat!!
Long live FIRST! |
I'm going to cornell too
It's pretty sad being a senior and all, but I've heard a lot of amazing stories about being mentors. I'm also heading up to Ithaca this fall and I plan on becoming a mentor on 639 :p
If any other FIRSTies are going to continue involvement in FIRST at cornell, it'd be cool if we get in touch before school starts. ~JP AIM: jpren2025 |
I Hope to...
I love FIRST and really want to return to my team. Most of the students have asked me if I am gonna come back.
The only problem is our main mentor. We have a great team ,but this guys doesn't get along with anybody. Being the guys I am, I regularly get into arguements with him. I will try to come back, but due to personal issues, he may not let me. Its a shame since everybody else is cool ith it. |
