The Stanley Cup playoffs thread....

OOO I know Im going to spark some heavy debates with this one...

Now that round 1 is over, what are your predictions for round 2?

East

Philadelphia and Ottawa?

New Jersey and Tampa Bay?

West

Vancouver and Minnesota?

Anaheim and Dallas?

OK the rules are simple, keep it above the belts and lets get it on!

----------

I'll open this one up....

East

Philadelphia and Ottawa
Ottawa, hands down. These guys are true winners. They played a heck of a season, sometimes even for free. These men a true examples of hockey players and even won the eastern conference. The Flyers are coming off of a excellent series with the Leafs and are going to be exhausted.

Ottawa in 5

New Jersey and Tampa Bay
Both of these teams are talented, but can Tampa Bay have 2 successful professional sports teams in one year??

Jersey in 6

West

Vancouver and Minnesota
Few people expected the Canucks to pass the first round, and only the Red Wings fans expected the Wild to pass, so this is going to be a good one. If the teams can stay healthy, this will easily go 6 or 7 games.

Vancouver in 7

Anaheim Vs Dallas
Was J.S. Gieguere's performance in round one going to carry over or was it just a fluke? The Ducks had very little the first round except for the fact that Gieguere stopped virtually everything that came at him. Dallas has the experience and the goaltender. Another plus for Dallas, Bill Guerin should be coming back into the lineup hopefully soon and that will be a big boost for them. Dallas is now the favorite with the Wings and Avs gone.

Dallas should prevail.

Dallas in 5

I have spoken.

Clark Gilbert 24-04-2003 17:13

East: Ottawa and Tampa Bay
West: Minnesota and Anaheim

I'm posting this just in case I get a little luck and guess something right. Then I can laugh at DJ. :D

Kristina 25-04-2003 00:08

Since I don't really follow hockey all that much, I'll pick my choices based on some strange reasoning...so just try to follow.

Philadelphia v. Ottawa....
I take Ottawa, what's the hockey playoffs without a little Canadian blood in there just to mix things up a little bit. Plus I'm not picking Vancouver, see below.

New Jersey v. Tampa Bay...
The tampa bay bucs (yes, I know they're football) always beat the Minnesota vikings thus I hold a grudge against the whole city, so New Jersey it is! Not to mention I also have a lot of beef with Florida in general (no offense you Floridians, there's just too many instances that give your whole state a bad name).

Vancouver v. Minnesota...
Wild all the way baby! Born and raised in Minnesota and the one and only thing I like from that state are its sports teams. I hope they take the whole thing to compensate for the Vikings dismal season and the twins lost in the baseball playoffs. If the Timberwolves win too it will be a great season for Minnesotans.

Dallas v. Anaheim...
First of all there's one strike against Dallas because they abadoned Minnesota. Second, I just really don't like the state of Texas (no offense Texans). Then I am from southern California so I guess I should root for the ducks and their team was formed based on a movie set in Minnesota so yeah, of course I have to root for them.

D.J. Fluck 25-04-2003 10:18

Oh my...5 OT game and the Ducks prevail...

This is working out for my Stars in 5 prediction...

Jersey won last night also, but not as exciting as the 7 full period + 55 second game

Harrison 25-04-2003 17:13

In the west:

Vancouver vs Ana.

East:

Ottawa vs NJ.

Kristina 25-04-2003 17:24

So Harrison picked the Canadian teams...thats a big surprise!

Matt Attallah 25-04-2003 19:46

Well, here are the "Hockey God's" prediction :D:

East:

Ottawa Vs. Philadelphia: Phillie isn't that great. Ottawa has the speed and people. Phillie only had luck their last round.

**Ottawa in 5**

New Jersey Vs. Tampa Bay: Wow. Tampa Bay made it past the 1st round. New Jersey is the better team all around.

**New Jersey in 4**

West:

Anaheim Vs. Dallas: If the Ducks can play like they did against Detroit, they will get a sweep, again. Their goaltender makes up what they lack in offense.

**Ducks in 4** <---Upset Special

Vancouver vs. Minnesota: Minnesota showed who they where against Colorado. Vancouver faced St. Louis, and St. Louis isn't that great of a team, but both of their rounds went into game 7.

**Minnesota in 5**

Change of Avatar

I'd like to point out that D.J.'s avatar was, until recently, a changing display of pro-Avalanche propaganda, and anti-Red Wings sentiments. It's amazing how fast that changed when the Avalanche were beaten by lowly, recent expansion Minnesota. Now he's backing the soon to be swept Dallas Stars (ironically the former Minnesota NorthStars). I say it going to be New Jersey over Anaheim in the finals (in 6 games or less).

Now that hockey season's over, it time to watch some basketball. Seeing that Mr. Fluck is from Indiana, I'd like to offer a gentelmen's bet: Pistons over the Pacers in the conference finals.

1. avalanche are eliminated no point in rooting for an eliminated team. Gotta go with my 2nd favorite. Anyway, Im still sticking with the story that the red wings inhale audibly..next year is the avs year. When hockey season starts back up, ill have the avs avatar back up. Heck, Im not one who changes teams. My room is decorated with Avalanche gear and I don't plan on changing teams any time soon.

2. Basketball inhales audibly as much or even more as the red wings...so who cares :D

Matt Attallah 26-04-2003 22:53

haha...

Ducks are up 2 games to 0 on Dallas!!

GO DUCKS!!!

Cause they're going to win....time to bring the cup back home...besides the fact that its sitting in the HOF in Toronto most of the year ;)

[edit]

I'll also point out that up to this point all of my picks have been correct:

Ottawa - Philadelphia (Senators lead series 1-0)
New Jersey - Tampa Bay (Devils lead series 2-0)
Dallas - Anaheim (Ducks lead series 2-0)
Vancouver - Minnesota (Canucks lead series 1-0)

[/edit]

Joe Ross 28-04-2003 10:20

The Angels won the world series in highly improbable fashion. The Ducks will win the stanley cup in an even more highly improbably fashion.

IMDWalrus 01-05-2003 07:17

Here are my predictions, straight from the "Go Leafs" thread:

Ottawa in five
Tampa Bay in seven
Anaheim in seven
Minnesota in six

Right now, it looks like two of those could happen (Ottawa and Anaheim). The other two are questionable.

One more game left for Anaheim to advance...Go Ducks!

D.J. Fluck 05-05-2003 21:30

Flyers are gone, Tampa Bay is gone...

Harrison 05-05-2003 22:22

So far 2 of my predictions are correct (ott and NJ).

And its looking like my other 2 may be right as well (vancouver and the ducks can end it tonight ).

D.J. Fluck 05-05-2003 22:54

1st period updates

Stars 1, Ducks 0

Minnesota 1, Cannucks 0

Jeff Waegelin 05-05-2003 23:11

Well... we'll see if DJ is right, after all. Can the Stars hold their lead?

D.J. Fluck 06-05-2003 00:17

Period 2 Updates

6-2 Wild

2-2 Tie (Ducks & Stars)

---------

Prediction for the eastern conference finals:

Ottawa over Jersey in 6

D.J. Fluck 06-05-2003 01:27

Wow, Dallas loses because of a goal that was called back (by NHL rules it should have counted...but it was one of those FIRST-like rules that nobody knows which is the proper way to interpret :p). Yeah they lost...

I just saw the video again and I am outraged even more...

One team left in the 2nd round..

Kristina 06-05-2003 02:04

:) Wow, if I posted what DJ IM'ed me when the stars were eliminated, his political career would be gone...but I'm nice like that.

Anywho, I'm 3/3 (Ottowa, New Jersey, Anaheim) and Minnesota's still alive. We'll see if I can bat 1000.

Matt Attallah 06-05-2003 11:27

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The Ducks won, agian!! I hope they go all the way to the cup - than win it!! Don't ever defy the "Hockey God" agian...

(i didn't get the total match right, but the ducks still pulled out. I'm just hoping that the Wild will come back like they did aginst the Avs - hahahahahahahaha!)

Clark Gilbert 06-05-2003 12:21

Go Ducks Go! :D

Quack, Quack, Quack :D

lol

Um, K...

"Batting a thousand" is the term you're looking for, i think. Batting a hundred would mean you're doing really bad. =-]

Not to mention you're mixing you're sports metaphores. Considering this is you making hockey predictions, I'd say "sneaking one through the five hole" would be more accurate. ;-]

Kristina 06-05-2003 12:49

Lol, thanks George...I really did know that and I did cross my mind that I was making a baseball analogy but I didn't know any hockey ones.

/me makes mental note to self not to post late at night, especially after slaving away at a paper for hours and on a caffeine low.

So in a game or two we'll see if its Minnesota or Vancouver against the Ducks and then on the East its Ottowa v. New Jersey. I guess we'll finish up the West coast before the next round of predictions are made.

Jeff Waegelin 06-05-2003 15:11

I'd just like to take this opportunity to laugh at DJ... HAHAHA!

P.S. That was a valid interpretation of the rule. The goal was in the air before and during the moment the puck crossed the line, invalidating it.

By definition of that rule, the goal was not moving until after the puck went in. Bad call. They were screwed, but I am going to deal with it. ;)

Anyway, Ottawa will take it all

D. Gregory 08-05-2003 23:02

I'm taking Ottawa over New Jersey because they have an offensive ability.
I'm taking Ducks over Vancouver or Minnesota over Ducks depending on how things work out tonight. (Go Wild!) I have no confidence in Cloutier as a goalie, an 881% save percentage isn't even AHL worthy.

AJ Quick 08-05-2003 23:47

The Wild and Vancouver are going at it right now, and unfortunately, the Canucks are leading 2 to the Wilds 1.

Kristina 09-05-2003 00:46

/me does a little dance around the room....

And the Wild pull an AMAZING comeback after being down 3-1 in the series. So let's recap, Matt and I are 4/4 in predictions and DJ's second team the Stars and dreams of an all Canadian final are out the window.

Predictions for next round?

Right now I am satisfied and I don't really care what happens beyond this but ideally I would want New Jersey to beat Ottowa and Minnesota to beat the Ducks. If the Ducks win (which would be fine with my Californianess) then I'd cheer for them too. It's all about the West baby!

D.J. Fluck 09-05-2003 00:49

I really do not want to say this, but the west is going down this year. The Wild and the Ducks?! That is such a joke.

East
Wild over the Ducks in 7 (Probably a down 3-1 comeback :p)

West
Senators over Devils in 6

Matt Attallah 09-05-2003 15:16

Hahahahahahaha! DJ - Never doubt the Hockey god and Godess!

East:

Ottawa vs. New Jersey - This is a hard match up to call. Between the teams they have played, and both their styles of play, they are about even. Ottawa is playing for a right to stay in Canada (money issues) and New Jersey is just playing for the cup. I'm gonna have to say New Jersey thanks to a coin flip..

New Jersey in 7

West:

Anaheim vs. Minnsoeta - Wow. Who ever thought that these 2 teams would make it past the quarter finals? The Ducks have had a little while off compared to the Wild. The wild are all beat up thanks to Vancouver, while the Ducks have been resting. Mabye too long the Ducks have rested. This is also hard to call. They both have excellent goal tending, but I'm gonna have to say Ducks will win it thanks to their style of playing.

Ducks in 5

You are no hockey god :p

You think the Devils will still win even though the Ottawa Senators are playing for the right to remain as the Ottawa Senators? I think you are nuts, but time will only tell...

Hey if the Sens lose and get moved we will get to see the new Houston team play while at the championships next year :D :p

AJ Quick 09-05-2003 17:25

Wild in 1.

:D

What was that - DJ? I called it - even in 7 games! Never doubt the word of a hockey god.

Here is my final prediction:

Ducks vs. Devils: Wow. What a year the Ducks had. From 7th seed to the finals. NJ is tired from the long series with the Sens. Ducks may be rusty thanks to the 12 or so days off they have had, but they should be back in 1-2 games. Both their playing styles are pretty much the same. Fast. The Devils are more of a physical team, but the Ducks showed they can take a check or two when they played the Stars.

Ducks in 5

::Edit::

So far for my predictions - I am 100%. Take what ever DJ says w/ a grain of salt!

EddieMcD 24-05-2003 16:02

One word: Jiggy!

D.J. Fluck 25-05-2003 12:14

Ok I haven't had the best of luck in calling these playoff series this year, but the ducks have so many coincidences to the 1996 Florida Panthers. What does this mean? The 1996 Florida Panthers and the 2003 Mighty Ducks have the same GM. Also The Florida Panthers were not expected to make it to the finals, they beat the heavily favored Pittsburgh Penguins in 7 games. The Panthers had very little outstanding talent...the only reason they survived is because of the superb play of their goalie, John Vanbiesbrouck. The Panthers made it to the finals and then they were beaten down badly in 4 games by arguably (ESPN said this) one of the greatest Playoff Teams of all time (Colorado Avalanche ;)) with a goalie who had a few cups already. Even though Giguere and Brodeur ranked 1 and 2 respectively, Broudeur already has 2 stanley cups since 1995 (1995, 2000). Broduer has the experience and the Ducks are setting themselves up for a total meltdown. When Tuesday hits, the Ducks haven't played a team in 10 days. Which means Giguere hasn't seen a shot from an opponent in 10 days. The Ducks are going to be over rested and about as rusty as and 81 Chevette.

My Final Prediction

Devils in 6

Jeff Waegelin 25-05-2003 12:26

No kidding... hehe :p Well, we'll see how your last shot at redemption goes...

Anyone else find it funny/cool/interesting that the Nets and Devils are both in their respective finals? ESPN said it was the first time the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Finals have been in the same arena since 1994, when the Knicks and Rangers had that honor.

IMDWalrus 25-05-2003 13:47

I just don't see the Ducks losing the Cup this year. New Jersey will put up a fight, but the way Anaheim's been playing, I just have a feeling that they won't lose.

Anaheim in five.

Kristina 25-05-2003 14:32

So from this all, I learned that my best bet is using flawed logic to make my predictions so this is why the Ducks will win the Stanley Cup.

*If they're good enough to beat my beloved Wild who are from my homestate of Minnesota. If my team can't win, I want them to win.
*The team was created based off of a movie that was based in Minnesota, ergo they redeem themselves for beating the Wild.
*They're from Southern California, as am I. Give us a little something...the Lakers couldn't hack it, we don't have a football team, and we'll see if the Angels can pull of another miraculous win again.
*West Coast Pride!
*The simple fact that it will greatly anger DJ is good enough for me :)

shyra1353 25-05-2003 19:55

Anaheim in 6

D.J. Fluck 27-05-2003 22:34

the Ducks looked horrible

1-0 Devils

I think she is refering to LA, who hasnt had a pro football team since the Raiders and Rams deserted them for Oakland and St Louis respectively. :p

Lil Lisa 28-05-2003 22:06

Gosh darn it.

I say by some unknown cause both teams disappear just during the weeks of the finals and Red Wings get the Cup by default. ;)

(Yes, someone's still bitter. :p)

Anywho.. I think Jersey's gonna put up a good fight. Anaheim in the 6th, 2OT, 3-2.

D.J. Fluck 30-05-2003 11:29

Ducks lose again!!

Heres a little fact I learned last night

The Devils are 8-0 in series when they go up 2-0 :D

Back to Anaheim for game 3 on Saturday night

Kristina 03-06-2003 15:09

Here's a hockey IM I got from a friend, I thought it was cute (yes, I know I'm the only person who would hockey and cute in the same sentence.)

For Giguere, the puck stops here -> .
For Brodeur, the luck stops here -> .

Well...

There is a FIRST for everything - right?

(No pun intended)

D.J. Fluck 05-06-2003 22:47

Devils just took a 3-2 lead in the series tonight with a very impressive 6-3 win. Game 6 is on Saturday in Anaheim where the Devils can take the cup home with them, if not game 7 is back in Jersey

Matt Attallah 08-06-2003 10:06

How bout' thoes Ducks? After loosing 6-3 in game 5 they come back and win game 6, 5-2.

I still have hope for the Ducks. I realize that in this series that who ever plays at home has won - but I don't care - I'm very confident of the Ducks!!!

Ducks in game 7 after 1 period of OT - 4-3

(comon ducks - i still would like to be 100% in my predictions. :D)

D.J. Fluck 08-06-2003 11:43

Ducks win game 6, but they are goin back to Jersey where the Ducks have had absolutely no success there. Two 3-0 shutouts and a 6-3 loss. Even though the Ducks won game 6, the mental edge still is with the Devils
