Iminant Hard Drive Failure!

i bought a hardrive from a garage sale, and the guy that i bought it from told me that it turns on and off at random. whell when i just recently reformatted my hardrive, and loaded XP. the computer kept turning off the hardrive and it never turned on untill i rebooted

whell now i rebooted this morning and my hard drive made a screeching noise and the screen told me,

HARD DRIVE DETECTS IMINANT FAILURE!

umm.... that isnt normal, :ahh:

um, if you got the hard drive from a garage sale, don't expect much. do yourself a favor, go buy a new hard drive. they're cheap.

some sites you may want to look at...

www.tigerdirect.com
www.cyberguys.com

It could be used as a non functional noise maker on CD

Seeing as how you're on 481, from Richmond, it might be quite a drive for such a small order, but there's a great store here in San Jose, called PixelUSA (www.pixelusa.com), that has great prices on almost anything.

Hmm...hard drives can be turned into speakers!

I did it. It works. It's cool. :)

Some of the bigger hard drives are around $1/gig, I believe. Or at least getting close!

z-buy.com has some good deals. Make sure you buy OEM if you know what you're doing. Who needs manuals/software/cables/screws/instructions/warranties/pretty packaging/etc.? Pfft. Live on the edge and buy OEM! :) Saves oodles of money and there's no big disadvantage!

grab the 120 gig WD special. Its awesome. Its, like, really, really 120 gigs. Thats big. Honest. And its got that 8 mb cache so you can do big file transfers like nobody's business.

Or get that super awesome 136 gb SCSI drive. Only, you would need to drop as much cash as you would for a new computer. Still, 136 gb SCSI makes me drool.

about your current drive: you bought it from 'some guy' and he even told you it turns on and off randomly . . . . . . what did you expect? It might be fit enough to have fun destroying it with a 12 pound sledge hammer, but I don't think it would be very useful outside of that. Or feed it to your robot.

what would you use it for? From what I have seen, most teams have enough problems with their robots randomly turning on and off as it is . . . .

maybe just mount it on there as a mascot . . . . .

I recently saw in interesting project in a book that involed using an old hardrives magnets, and coils to build an interesting robotics project. Search for beam magbots. Maybe you can find it if not there is a book. I forgot the name.
