Marrage In FIRST
I am taking a pole to see who is getting married or is married to someone that they wouldn't have met if they weren't in FIRST.
For me I wouldn't have met my Fiance because of FIRST. He was on team #201 and if it wasn't for FIRST it's a safe bet that we would have never met. The same thing goes for his sister who's boyfriend is on #27 and she's on #201. I was talking with Martus about ho funny it is and he brought up the idea to do this thread. So if you you have a story about how you and your other met because of FIRST share it with the rest of us. Marjory "Frosty" |
I'm in robotics because of my boyfriend...But I guess that's different...
|
I know a couple that used to be on our team. They met through FIRST. I think their wedding is in June. Yeah!! Congrats by the way, on getting engaged! :D
|
My wife and I didn't meet because of FIRST (blind date) but FIRST is the perfect activity for us. She's a teacher at Wilson Magnet and I work for Xerox. It's a marriage of convenience.
|
One of the former members of my team (Chelly's sister!) is getting married to a guy she met in FIRST. :D

I'm not surprised at all by FIRST-formed relationships and marraiges being somewhat common. It's a long-term activity with close interaction of like interests. Should an attraction form, there is already a basis for "compatibility."
Then there are the marriages and relationships that form when one person is in FIRST and the other wasn't, usually the one who isn't wants find a way to be involved. |
My team has been (up until 02 season) run by a husband and wife. They are both teachers, but they teach at different schools in my district (the district has only 2 high schools). The team consists of both schools.
|
Two of our old mentors ended up meeting and getting married through FIRST. Now the the woman is pregnant and due any day!!! What do you think of the name Dean... (j/k!)
|
I suppose if a FIRST team can design, build and test a robot in six weeks... anything else is possible :yikes:
|
you mean marriage? I'm obviously not married (only 16) but i have met many fun and interesting people in first, and even some people that i wish that i could date, but they just live too dern far away:(...hmm...how about a long-distance relationship...? ;)
|
Funny you should say long distance relationship....lol
Yeah, anyone who's seen any of my posts directly before chicago midwest or nationals may have noticed me point out somone in particular, lol. My girlfriend is the absolute BEST, I met her actually on CD. We talked for a long time and met up in chicago and houston. It really kinda sucks we only get to see each other twice a year at the moment (she's on 71, in Indiana...I'm 108, Florida)....but it's worth it to be with her :) So there's mine..not exactly marriage, but a relationship built upon talk (we talked on the phone for 17 hours last weekend :D , THAT was great :) ) ...being she'll probobly read this: Love ya babe! [The rest of you can disregard this ;) ] |

and yep, joys of night & weekend minutes! that was great!!! several people on my team are talking to other teammates or people on other teams, but i think i'm the only one actually dating someone on another team. [sorry, everyone can disregard this too...hehe, love ya too jim! :)] |
Teams 234 and 393 have a unique marrage relationship. In 1999 Cyber Blue 234 was started by Scott Ritchie. His wife Libby came and sat in on some of our meetings. She liked it so, much that she decided to start her own team in 2000. This relationship started out rough, but has greatly improved over the years. We're not as nice to each other as people may think ;). Both teams like to have "bonding" events together including helping TP others houses!!! I think that these may be the only 2 teams in FIRST that have both a husband and wife manage 2 separate teams.
Now that we know we can get along at competitions, we should start signing up to go to the same ones... ahem, Libby, Scott :D |
There has been a lot of 'historical relationships' on our team since it started. However, the only marriage I can think of is my floor coach Lucas is engaged to another Alum of the team. Not sure when they are getting married though.
....hehe, anyone ever thought of having the robots in their wedding party??? whoa! that'd be wicked cool!:p |
I believe team #135, Penn Robotics, is run by Phil Perdan and his wife (I'm incredibly sorry if I get this name wrong, my advance apologies) Holly. Indiana is good for getting spouses involved, I suppose. Team Hammond, I know, has the whole Beatty family, the Noble's (Chris went off to help start 461), the Michna's (Sarah the driver went off to St. Mary's and wants to start a team), the Kolodziej's (everyone knows and loves Kevin, who started a team at MSOE), the Preissig's, and the Weber's, among others. Their kids got involved with FIRST, got their parents involved, and now Team 71 has a great parent backing.
I met my boyfriend last year on Team Hammond, and we started dating shortly after the MMR. Going strong ever since (and another reason I'd like to get a team started at Rose-Hulman). It's hard to pull off a FIRST relationship, much less a FIRST long-distance relationship, but possible. |
The Technokats, though not back then, were ran by a husband and wife. I think they met through work not the team but still ran it. This was the 1996 season.

You may want to edit that last sentence before it gets you in trouble. (The voice of experience.) |

FIRST = compatibility???? ;-)
I must say, since I've been in FIRST, I don't think there's been a girl that I've had an interest in that wasn't involved in FIRST. Like someone mentioned above, what better place to find people that have similar interests?
As far as the long distance thing goes, if both parties want it to work, it can and will work. There are tons of great examples out there. Communication is key. I myself was involved in a long distance relationship because of FIRST until recently. It does get hard at times, but seeing the other person at competitions is wonderful. Plus, the time that you do get to spend together is that much more precious. So I say congrats to those that are taking their relationships to the next level, and good luck to those that are just beginning. And here's to hoping for those of us that are still looking (I like long walks on the beach, moonlight..HAHAHA). I guess on that note, for all you singles out there, keep an eye out for the FIRST Singles Club coming soon..... Kev P.S. Amanda, you got my name right! You rock!!! |

*dum dum dum dum*... Does anyone else hear wedding bells? I LOVE YOU CHRIS!! |
I was actually introduced into FIRST by my ex-boyfriend. We had stared dating our senior year of HS and he was on team 146, I had heard of FIRST and that was about it...he ended up being the driver of the robot that year (1999) and I decied that I would suprize him by going down to UTC regional to cheer him on... well I was hooked from that point on...
I'm no longer with him (he broke up w/me on Valentine's day after 4 1/2 years) but I really glad that I did go to cheer him on that day so very long ago...I'm now an advisor for team 1073, hopefully assisting with starting up 2 more teams and an active mbr of IF...gotta luv it :D |
You'll be hearing wedding bells soon enough, Bree. After all, we just turned 17.
|
I met my boyfriend through FIRST. We're on the same team.

I'm going to marry a FIRSTer...when I'm 30...at least that is what my dream told me...
btw...the dream was pretty freaky... |
i met my boyfriend through first...we were on the same team until this year, and i was on a different team...that was interesting...:p
|
I was wondering the other day if anyone else had had this happen to them. the girl I'm currently dating I met at the VCU Regional this year. It's a funny story... Last year there was a new school being built in my district, so in turn when it opened this year members from our team last year have now created a team at the new school. That team is 1086, I could be wrong with the number. But at the VCU Regional that team was having many problems, and I noticed that my former comrads were in trouble, so I volunteered to help them out. While helping them I met the girl I'm dating, and last weekend we went to my junior prom with a big group of friends, and we got home at 6:00 in the mroning.
Just thought I would add my story to the pot. Mr. Ivey |
long-distance relationship due to FIRST..nah..never even considered it ;)
|
AS i sit here and read all your post. I think for the reasons FIRST was formed. ONe thing is for kids and mentors to interact with other teams. I think second biggerst thing FIRST promotes is friendships and if it happens relationships. Some of my best friends i have met through robotics. It is easy to finda best friend or a partner in FIRST becuase you share the same interest. I mean what other kind of girls can i talk aobut robotics about and not feel like a dork. My old g/f is from 267 we have been friends since my team was started 2001 and we started dating this year, stuff feel through and we arent together right now but we are still friends.

My sister and her fiance started with our brand new FIRST team their sophmore year. Now they are juniors in college. My sister is a ME, he is going into computer science both with a Co-ops at Kimberely Clark. Talk about a a powerful match-up :p They will do great things. By the way-the wedding is next summer.
Long-distance FIRST relationships? Who woulda thought? I would have never considered one. The distance thing kinda eeks me out. I met my old boyfriend at the Indiana Robotics Invitational last july. We talked a little bit and he ended up following us home ;). It's only a 2 hour drive, lucky for him. He was charming and after a couple of weeks of consideration he finally got me to break down, throw distance aside, and go out with him. We dated for 9 monthesish. We're both busy, and well it's hard and stressful. It was great while we had it, i would never regret it, but sometimes fate acts in weird ways. It was good while we had it, off to find a guy a little bit closer though. :p I do have quite a few friends from the area where he lives. It is mandatory that I visit them. :P Even if I don't see him, it's nice to see all of my wonderfully geeky FIRST friends :P. |
this is day 3 in germany, and trust me, now that i've seen the world i'm SURE that FIRST boys are the best!! aber Krefeld ist eine schöne stadt and sie macht sehr spaß und ich liebe es!!!! hehehe!!
|
Somewhat along these lines...
The first date I had with who is now my fiance was the OCCRA championships the first year...her and I actually met online, and I had talked to her about what I was working on getting things ready for the tournament, and it just worked out that the first thing we actually did together was head over to Avondale that Friday night to get things set up...
And there started her addiction to FIRST... :) |
Re: Marrage In FIRST
I could not imagine getting married to someone I met through FIRST, I dunno it seems that it should be a work enviorment...although what do I know about marriage

Well Matt I would like to say that I am living proof that marrage in FIRST does happen. I have just married the guy i met throw FIRST. We were both drivers for our individual teams. We met in 2000 at the Great Lakes Regional, his team picked mine to go in to the finals and we won. Then we were at Nationals and it was my teams turn to do the picking and so they(201) were one of our picks, and can't say that, that had as happy of an ending. Then if that wasn't enough, he graduatited but came to the Kettering Kick Off to support his old team and finaly had the guts to talk to the girl from 47 with the bright orange hair :) . And the rest as they say is history. And if that wasn't enough my sister-in-law(old driver from 201 A.K.A Emily) will be getting married in August to her guy(old driver from 27 A.K.A Todd). I guess it a driver thing. ;) |
