Moving MP3s to New Computer

Ok, so I'm not a very good network kinda of person so I thought I would post here to see what the best way to transfer my MP3s from my old computer to this new laptop I'm using now. I tried downloading some firewire network program that didnt work at all and I hear that using a cat5 cable (is that right?) between the two is a good method. If this is the best method, do I also need to use an internet connection or just the cable.

Please Help ;) :D

Networking with a crossover cable
Timmy in Mobile, Alabama, wants to know if he can make a direct connection between his laptop and desktop computer so he can transfer files. He's using Windows XP.

You can use an Ethernet crossover cable. If you use this cable, you won't have to use a hub. You need Ethernet cards in both computers, and you connect the two computers using the cable.

To set up Windows XP, you need to set up a network connection. Make sure you use NetBIOS, or you may not be able to see the computers. You also need to share the folders that you want to be seen by each computer.

The information's out there.

"borrow" an iPod (i'm pretty sure kyle has one, no?), download all the music to there, then put it into the laptop, copy files onto laptop.

done, at no extra expense.

if you don't have an iPod (or similar device), then you do need a crossover cable, which is usually sold at computer stores (at very high prices, but it's sold there).

duhhhh Clark, I told you that before. I mean the iPod is only 10 gigs...jeez

What other reason would Kyle buy an iPod besides for you to use and claim as your own? :p ;)

Do you have a hub clark? Maybe im just dumb, but this is what I do: save all music into the my shared folder, or just share the C drive, then go on the laptop and copy it all to it.

Yessssssssssss.....We have an iPOD, the problem is that all the songs are in the wrong folders on the iPOD. My brother put them the way he wanted them, not the way I need them this summer for IRI. :D

Thanks Jim. I'll look into your suggestions.

Ian W. 08-06-2003 00:39

clark, since when did i say you had to be nice to your brother....?

;)

KyleGilbert45 08-06-2003 03:09

this is funny..... he always assumes that its both of our iPods but the in reality he didnt pay 1 cent for it.... its 100% mine...heck he's never even used the thing before.....

and now i know why i hate being a twin

Matt Attallah 08-06-2003 10:02

Well - just label everything yours and say he can't touch...

Have you 2 ever confused any of your parents before? :D (sorry - had to ask!)

/me smacks Kyle

Where would your iPOD be if I didn't download all the music for it! HA!

Oh well, the iPOD is a bad idea, my brother tried it on his laptop and it seperated them into 20 folders or something name f1-f20 something or other, each folder containing a certain amount of songs...weird....

Oh well. I'll try the crossover cable idea.

Isn't it odd how when you have a twin, something you completely buy on your own, your twin thinks is just as much theirs? My twin brother does that to me constantly, it gets annoying. They are always around you too, at least mine is...

Just do what I did, put the old hardrive in the new computer as a slave and transfer at will!!

Crossover Cable

Crossover cables are just plain cool! Got one where I work (Circuit City), and only paid $1.60 for it (store discount). Even works well for LAN games.

AlbertW 20-06-2003 17:03

crossover cables are annoying. i hated having to carry one around.

but now my mac autodetects crossover or not, so i don't :D

seriously. if you don't have any networking gear in the house, you need to get some. crossover cables are pretty common, and not too expensive. or borrow a hub from a friend.

Re: Moving MP3s to New Computer

Decided to bring back this thread instead of starting a new one. My external burner just went, and I'm a poor college student, so I need to find a way to get files off of my laptop. I am currently running two networks one wireless and one through a hub (two different locations). I have tried on both to view workgroup computers (all machines running a form of XP), but have failed.

I think I just need help with the software. On the hub network I am running four machines, and some can see others, and some can not. On the wireless network, neither computer can see each other. If you have any suggestions, please share. Thanks!

Re: Moving MP3s to New Computer

I just moved about 100 MP3's to my new laptop with a USB portable drive (it holds 256 MB) I know they are expensive (not sure what mine was because it was a present) but it worked like a charm for me.

Well, there's plenty of online tutorials on how to make your own crossover cable... it's fun and much cheaper. :) Google it.

or you can do something even cheaper. you get like 3 cds together and you put all your mp3's there and copy the cds to ure hd using WMP9 (Windows Media Player 9). no money to spend at all and if you want you can use the cds in ure car system. so it all works out.

if your use an apple type system the same method should be the same

Re: Moving MP3s to New Computer

hmmm

1. burn them to a cd
2.get a HUB and hook both your computer and laptop upto it take all your music files and use winrar to tar them up.... then make sure ftp is open on your computer (might have to get a program to run... i prefer SSH ftp://ftp.ssh.org/pub/ and just move them over from one to the other via network)
3.Try to get webspace somewhere or some remote box and tar up that file using winrar and put it on the site for easy d/l

Easiest + best way i prefer to backup is via cd :))))

if you dont have a burner get one!

if u dont have easy cd creator buy it (if u cant afford it RIP IT!)

:))))

Re: Moving MP3s to New Computer

With 2 firewire compatible macs you can connect them with a 6pin or 9pin firewire cable and take the computer you want to transfer files from, and basically transform it into a firewire hard drive. To do this, just push the T (Target Disk Mode) on startup.
