Order of the Phoenix - Harry Potter

Anyhoo, just finished reading the book after getting it at 12am this morning. My overall opinion was that it was a good book but the series isn't getting to innovative. There are many good plot twists and such but somewhat expected after having read 4 fairly long books of life of a wizard boy. Anyhoo, I'll post up my review of it since I have to write one for the school newspaper.

.. You've finished it ALREADY Yan????

I'm on page 8 or something... it might take me awhile to finish :D It's tedious looking at.. 900 pages?!

The Harry Potter craze is good because it discovered Daniel Radcliffe....

A copy just arrived at my house today... I guess my parents ordered it. I think my brother will read it and then I might if I get bored enough :p

I just finished it tonight, as well. I was *very* satisfied. And I can't wait for number 6!!

Alright, a couple of you have gotten all the way through.

I've never been a Harry Potter fan, although I have seen both of the movies. I've never read any of the books - they just don't appeal to me - but I am dying to know who is killed off. Can one of you PM and tell me?

Thanks much. I <3 spoilers. :)

"Did you hear that the Harry Potter author (whatever her name is...) cried that she killed off one of the characters? Yeah in a related story, Hillary Clinton cried because one of the characters in her book wasn't killed off..." :D Conan O'Brien

I've never been a Harry Potter fan either, I haven't seen the movies, read the books or anything. I don't understand why it appeals to people. But hey thats just me.

im reading the book right now. im almost on page 300. i absolutely love harry potter and i waited by my door all day yesterday til the book came. and when the postman came i ran to the end of the driveway to get it from him. im reading it right now and am only on page 300, which is quite pathetic. but so far, in my opinion, its too dark. i knew it was going to be dark, but i have to say i like the lighter stuff better in this series. not in all though. despite that, it still rocks.

Why read it so fast??? All you guys are gonne do is complain because it'll be soooo looong before the next book is out. I am taking my time with it. In fact I'm re-reading the others first so that it will cut down on the time frame before the next one hits the shelves.

First off, I am not reading it as fast as I can. My normal reading pace is just fast and I finished it in 8 hours. Nick Elser (also on our team) was sleeping over and after we bought it together at midnight, he finished after 5 hours, though that's not *fast* as that's his usual reading pace (crazy programmer boy reads too much). I am not about to read slower than normal or read fast and skim over details... just normal.

The movies suck and I have no clue how the studio plans on fitting everything in book 4 and 5 into a less than 3 hours long movie. The books have similarities to Roald Dahl and he was a great author. They've got a similar feeling to it when you read and everything just flies by. The language is simple yet the plot twists and characters are interesting to read.

Btw, the great thing about reading this book is that it provides closure on many things. Thus, it does not make you beg for the next book as much as the others did.

my dad got a copy for us today. except my mom gave it to my youngest brother, who reads really slow. like, it takes him an hour (well, almost) to read the comics in the morning, so yeah, i won't be reading it for like, a week, i'd say. oh well, i have two weeks of nothing to do, and I'll probably finish it within two days, so it's not like I'm missing too much.

Jupee 22-06-2003 20:54

My mom got the CD set yesterday!! We listened to the other four books the past two summers on the way to Canada for soccer...it's kind of like a mother-daughter thing...but yeah, the fifth book is good so far!

Yan Wang 22-06-2003 22:14

Book by cd?? That defeats the whole purpose of a book!

Btw, how long does it take for the reader to get through book5 at their pace? I find those audio books to be pretty slow... maybe I'd try it if they were a bit faster...

FotoPlasma 23-06-2003 03:52

I'm currently listening to the book on tape with my sister. We're currently on the 9th of 17 tapes.

She's read all of the books, but we've also listened to each one on tape together. It's really very fun.

And I disagree that audio books defeat the whole purpose of a book.

srjjs 23-06-2003 16:41

Just curious...what do you think IS the whole purpose of a book?

I'm with D.J. on this one. I was dragged to the movies by friends, or else I bet I wouldn't have seen them. Although I'm pretty big on fiction, I'm on a philosophy kick right now. Maybe someday I'll get around to it.
