How Long Can You Hold Your BREATH?

Yeah, so I found I have a knack for holding my breath. I was sitting down and timed myself and found that I'm at

151 Seconds

Still not quite at 3 minutes, but it's getting there.

Anyhoo, what do other people get?

Matt Attallah 07-21-2003 07:51 PM

2:12 in the pool! :D

George1902 07-21-2003 08:56 PM

OK... I just did it.

When i came to, the stopwatch read 1:08. With a few weeks of practice, I could prolly break 2 minutes.

Kevyn H. 07-21-2003 09:09 PM

got 1:23

Aaron Lussier 07-21-2003 10:22 PM

One minute and Twenty Seconds

shyra1353 07-21-2003 10:23 PM

wow...you guys can hold it for a long time. i can only hold mine for 27 seconds

RogerR 07-21-2003 10:45 PM

without any preparation i got 1:43
after a little hyperventilation, i was able to get 2:22.

i used to be able to go for 3 minutes when i was younger because i played the tenor sax, and could hold a steady note on my sax for about 45 seconds

this skill comes in hsndy when i'm cleaning the bathrooms at "Publix"

<edit> after posting on this thread, i realized that i really need a hobby outside of FIRST</edit>

143. It comes in handy when you have an unpleasant task to do, such as changing a litter box.

Or dealing with cabbage.

Still, I have poor lung capacity and can't hold my breath for more than 30 seconds or so.

Jeff Waegelin 07-21-2003 10:56 PM

1:30 for me

BandChick 07-21-2003 11:09 PM

Well, last time I checked it was nearly two minutes. but it's appoximately 10 strokes of freestyle in the pool (not sprinting. but going for distance). yeah, so i can't really help you there.

[edit] that or 16 measures of flute music at a tempo of 80. Yes, there is a bandchick in there somewhere ;)[/edit]

BingoTheClowno 07-21-2003 11:40 PM

two minutes with a little dash of hyperventilation.

Amber H. 07-21-2003 11:49 PM

Hmmmm....AS a voice coach, I find this all very interesting.

I am amazed by your ability Monsiercoffee.

Here is another challenge of lung capacity and control that takes a slightly different approach. I use it with my students to help them sing longer phrases with less need to sneak in a breath.

How long can you make a sustained hissing sound on just one breath?

Another one is: How long can you hold a piece of paper on a wall using only your breath blowing on it?

These are good measures of lung capacity as well. I would be fascinated by your responses if any.

Jeff Waegelin 07-21-2003 11:54 PM

To answer the first question, 54 seconds. Is that a long time? I play trumpet, so I suppose that's where I get it from.

I can only hold a piece of paper up for about 3 seconds... it was a full 8.5x11 sheet, though, if that makes a difference.

Yes 8.5x11 is exactly what I meant. I forgot to mention that you should place yourself only about an inch away from the paper on the wall. It's hard, isn't it?

Very good grasshopper. I'm only doing 45 seconds tonight (darn asthma). So technically, you got me beat kid. Congratulations!

Now, who can beat you?

BandChick 07-22-2003 11:01 AM

as a flute player the paper thing was nothing new. i can hold an 8.5 x 11 sheet to a wall for about 5 seconds. at least, that's how long it was the last time i did it (say sophomore year).

but as for the continuous hissing sound: only 24 seconds.

Aaron Lussier 07-22-2003 02:30 PM

Constant Hissing - 55 seconds

Paper on wall - 4 seconds

So in 4/4 time, if I've done my math correctly, that's about 48 seconds? (I played the flute as well for almost 8 years).

I know I can get at least 2 minutes out of holding my breath. I'll have to time it to see how much over that 2 minute mark I can get.

Dan Richardson 07-22-2003 05:11 PM

hrmm as for First question I've held my breath for 3:05 thats my personal record

( no joking.. I've been timed )

I just have big lungs

As for hissing sound I have no clue I have to do it for voice lessons all the time so I could see right now.. :: starts counting :: 47 seconds.. ( I need to work on that )

Uhh holding a sheet of paper to the wall.. goodness where do people come up with this stuff :-)

4 seconds

I've played my trombone for 20 measures before.. 4/4 sustained slow tempo... tho for 18 of the measures it was just an F and played somewhat quiet and I got a big breath b4 it

Can any of you music people do that "circular breathing" thing? I saw Kenny G hold a note for like 5 minutes one time doing this.

Must... resist... can't say... Okay, I think I will just keep that comment to myself for now.

For the sustained hissing sound, 37 seconds.

For the paper on the wall only 6 seconds (which I think was a fluke since I haven't been able to do it again). A co-worker looked at me very strangely while I was doing this, I guess I should have closed my office door...

Yan Wang 07-23-2003 02:45 PM

The continuous breathing is called cyclic breathing... You can breathe in/out at the same time.

As for the hissing, 54 seconds.

For the paper on wall, 4 seconds.

I can, but only if i don't think about it. If i try to do it, i can't.

and actually, it can be referred to as either, though most musicians call in continuous. i guess if you want to be technical though...

For all those people who can hold their breath underwater for more than two minutes or so, I give you all some credit.

Holding your breath underwater is harder because the pressure of the water surrounding you is greater than air pressure and that's why most people can hold their breath underwater for less time.

Anyways, now that I'm done acting all Mr. Wizard like, my time (not in water) is:
40 seconds with no practice.

I'll try to get that number up by the end of the weekend and post my new and improved time here then.. :)

I can hold it for > 2 min underwater and it doesn't feel any different than on land. I don't understand what the correlation between increased pressure and holding-ur-breath-time is. It's not like there is enough pressure to force that air out of your lungs and back into the atmosphere...

And wow, this thread was brought back after a long time. Is it because people are swimming more now that it's summer? :)

isn't it amazing that we are all so facinated with how long we can manage to deprive our bodies of oxygen before giving in to the impulses that over millions of years have evolved specifically to prevent us from doing such a thing?

w00t. much hyperventilation, but 132 seconds.

terrific. now i'm dizzy.[/wheezing]

yeah, i was first chair clarinet in band for a while, and i was in girl's show choir, not to mention all the years of swimming i did, and still do in my pool. i was once able to go 50 yards without breathing (sprints), but that was back when i was in shape. so for now, i'll take my 132 minutes and be quite proud of myself.

To bring this dead thread back... one more time... (Sorry. I didn't see it during either of its first two lives.)

With a little hyperventilational prepping, 2 minutes even. (If I hadn't been watching a clock, it would have been less, I'm sure.)

About 4 seconds. (Every time I tried to time it by looking at my watch before starting, I couldn't even get the paper to stay. I had to resort to just blowing, and then after I was done blowing, count for the approximate length of time I had blown.)

Re: How Long Can You Hold Your BREATH?

when i'm swimming in practice= 4 mins
swim meets= 1-3 depending on race
free diving= usually about 5 mins

i never have really exerted my lungs when doing any of this, so i'm not sure how long i could just sit and hold my breath.

50 yard + wall + from push + underwater(not freestyle)

Re: How Long Can You Hold Your BREATH?

As this thread is brought back for the third time... XD

With no preping, I can hold my breath for a minute even.
I hissed for 35 seconds.
I managed to hold the paper for 3 seconds. Somehow, the paper got stuck on the wall so I hit like 7 seconds. I say it was stuck because once I stopped breathing, it stayed. =/

Just for the record, its actually easier to hold your breath underwater. When your body hits the water your heart rate slows down, making it easier to hold your breath for a longer time.

*sticks head underwater* =]
