What cool thing have u done this summer?

Summer, ah, what a great time, nothing like being bit by bugs, getting roasted, and then on top of all of that, having the best times of ure life! Just as a little question, what have u guys and gals been doing? Myself for instance, i went to Maine, did some rock climbing and sea kyacking. So hit me back with what u guys did!!!

well i just got back from visiting a friend from team 247 in Michigan... whom i met initially on this site :D while i was there we went canoeing, hiking, bike riding, swimming, shopping, and tried to go "bunny punting" as he called it :P...lol. We also went to a place called Greenfield Village, visited the University of Michigan, IRI (where i made some new friends from team 48 and 301...luv ya Dianne!! ;)), hung with friends, watched movies, and most imprtantly... we made memories!! :)
now as for the rest of my summer? i plan on getting a job, doing some work in ROTC and going on a few trips to military bases and stuff, visting the gym at least once a week, and getting lots of rest in preparation for SENIOR YEAR!! YAY!!
i hope everyone else has a great summer too! ;)

I signed the lease to my apartment in the Chicago area.

That owns all - having a place to call your own, 500 miles away from your parents!! :D

For our birthdays this year my closest, "bestest" friend and I decided to go skydiving (Tandem jump, which is recommended for first time jumps). The way we saw it was, we're Geminis, which is an air sign, we were meant to fly! Because of bad weather we actually went two weeks after our birthday weekend, but we did do it. We jumped from the plane at 14,000 feet and did a free-fall for 55 seconds (which at 120 miles means we fell for close to 2 miles). The only word I can think of to describe it is amazing, but it was beyond that. Here's a not so good picture of me in free-fall

We're already trying to think of what we can do for our birthdays next year... she wants to go hang gliding, I want to go spelunking... maybe we should toss a coin.

so far, all i've done this summer is cycling in the florida panhandle, visiting the florida keys, and disney world.

So now you can come down and deliver your promise to kill me? ;)

I had to most fun going to Disney and riding Mission:Space. Simply put, it's the best non-coaster thrill out there, and is better than most coaters!

I'm also now doing a shadowing of a chemical engineer at the VCU Engineering Building where they hosted the Kick-off and team party last year.

o Working the 6-10 hours a week Sears gives me.
o Occasionally visiting Ricky Q. in Oconomowoc.
o Volunteering at IRI.
o Going to New Jersey for my grandma's funeral type thing.
o Going to New York to visit Mike, Maddie, Evan and whoever else I can get a hold of.
o Going to Pennsylvania to go 4-wheeling in the mountains! :D
o Getting ready for my senior year -- applying for scholarships, getting my college aps ready, etc.
o Working on sponsorship for the new FIRST team I'm trying to start.
o Occasionally sleeping. :p

Sat in $2000 seats for free and saw most of the Democrat Presidential nominees debate and met John Kerry. Ok, it might not be "cool" to most people but it was Christmas for a political junkie like.

In about a month, I can add to this list visiting France and Sweden.

Melissa Nute 25-07-2003 11:49

Visited Boston, WPI and Rhode Island

Volunteered 45 hours a week at a museum camp

Worked 20-30 hours a week at Garden Ridge

Going to National Latin Forum tomorrow

And...uh...
nothing else?

Jon K. 25-07-2003 12:08

Well so far the only exciting thing I have done was gone to see the Blue Man Group The Complex Tour which was awesome. And hopefully in about a week or so I will be getting my driving permit.

mgreenley 25-07-2003 12:28

I'll just tell you in a month and a half when school gets into session.

No, no. That would ruin it wouldn't it? I did a couple:rolleyes: things...

...I went ocean kayaking in North Carolinia (Outer banks)
...Had an amazingly fun family reunion which included pillaging the kitchen with my cousins and eating all the food in the house while enjoying the rec. room (VCR, cable TV, Pool table, Hot tub, Pool, and my cousins Xbox (Halo only :D ).
...Did I mention that I kicked some Master Chief butt in Halo?
...Did some more kayaking, swimming, jogging, hiking...
...And that was only in one week.

...I also went to camp and did climbing...
...zip-lining...
...archery...
...and I stabbed myself in the hand with a knife...
...a wooden knife:D ...
...try that.

...Wait a sec, more coming...
...didn't do the shotgin or rifle (just 20 gauge and .22 rimfires:mad: )...
...didn't do sailing (and I wasted two hours getting re-certified for it.)...

...On the other hand I'm now soooooooo close to eagle scout...

...So in other words it was pretty boring.:D

I'll tell you the rest in a month and a half when school gets in session.

Ian W. 25-07-2003 15:40

where'd you go camping, yawgoog? i only ask because i was going to go there this summer, except i'm stuck at a research thing instead... :(

my summer has been fun, filled with late nights of Risk, The Game of Global Domination (you have to know my friends for that to make sense ;)), ultimate frisbee, frisbee golf (a one hour attempt at least), driving on the cross bronx expressway (never again), learning more about linux (gentoo, to be specific) on my computer, reading, beach, half trying to teach my dog how to fetch (stupid lhasa, drop the ball!), and um, that's about it.

i'm supposed to be going to hershey park in late august, possibly going to six flags great adventure late august as well.

oh, one other thing. working on my eagle project. almost done, finally, maybe i'll post pictures here when i'm done (i'm building a "geniza", for burying old jewish prayer books and whatnot [old tradition, i guess]). and working on three more merit badges. hopefully i'll be eagle by october or november...

My sister went there for about a week a few years back and loved it. I want to go up there some time. Bar Harbor is great too.

This summer i think i spent the best 2 months of my life in krefeld, germany studying the german language, grammar, culture, phonetics, literature, and conversation. I lived with a host family in Toenisvorst, and they were the coolest people. Aside from school on the weekdays, i went to Cologne, Munich, Dusseldorf, Aachen, Kempen, Bonn, Heidelberg, Trier, Cochem, Fuessen (think Neuschwanstein), Koblenz, and a lot of cute small towns. I think the only bad part of the whole ordeal was that i didn't go to IRI, but since i was in Bavaria that weekend, i didn't mind too much. yeaah.... that and missing dance camp, but people that have more energy than me at a FIRST competition just scare me.

I have spent this summer working 48 hours a week as an EMT in the inner city. I love my job and its great getting to help ppl all shift long. The only thing I did not like about my job was my work schedule caused me to miss IRI :( At least i am not working the weekend of Cal Games.

what kind of training do you need to do that job?

Alex Cormier 30-07-2003 21:46

i have went to a summer camp for two weeks and had built this is three days with 5 other kids my age during the first week. http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...threadid=21504

I went to see Cirque du Soliel and i went to on vacation w/ 5 of my friends!!

Frank(Aflak) 30-07-2003 22:08

I've worked 8-9 hours a day at one of our sponsor's shops. They aren't a true machine shop in that mostly I've been assembling parts into heaters (the frames are made by someone else, shipped in. I put the heating element in, insulate it, wire it with any switches, pots, and relays it uses, assemble the rest of the frame, label it, box it, put it at the dock.)

Its more responsibility than it sounds, tho, because the person who was there before me quit about a week after I got in, and instead of finding another permanent they just moved me up (without a raise) and made me my own manager. I now have an underling who I am training to take over after I go back for my last year of HS (actually, I've had two: the first one was a moron and destroyed large amounts of product=FIRED!) but, me and my underling are responsible for about a quarter of the production of the company (industrial side( they build the big custom machines. I wish to be over there): 1/2 of produciton. S&E(where we build standard heaters):1/2 . . . there are a few models, I am in charge of about half of them, and wiring the standalone controls (more interesting than the heaters) for all of them.)

I am making a steady 8/hour, which will leave me with 2-3k in my bank account (newly opened) come start of school year.

Maybe when my '91 Sable craps out (I hope it lasts through college . . but it might die this year) I will have enough $$ to replace it (hmmm, but with what? definatly a full size sedan, maybe an old Grand Marquis . . . if only I could scrape the cash together for a Marauder . . . . . . . . . )

also, maybe this weekend or the next, I am starting my railgun (more involved. I need to build some variable transformers (1 bar of iron and LOTS of wire) and LOTS of homebuild capacitors (I'm think real thin metal with rounded edges (sharp edges will bleed the charge. Thats what a lightning rod does (besides attract lightning) with several layers of cling wrap between them (1/8 inch, maybe) and then rolled like a swiss cake roll. Then put alot of them in series so they can take higher voltages (really high, thats why i said 'several' transformers) and then put those series in parallel so as to increase the capacitance of the circuit (With what I am planning, firing this from wall outlet would pop every breaker in sight).) - - I will also need to build an AC-DC converter, and while I know how to do a simple one, making one able to take higher voltages may be a problem) Only reason I need high voltage is to counter the back emf induced by the projectile as it goes zooming down the coils.

I might finish it in the fall sometime. . . it will be quite the drawn out project. If anyone asks, I will claim its for launching objects into orbit so they can't nail me on having a BFG in my basement. I will probably fund this with summer job money.

robot180 30-07-2003 22:40

I did a few things.

I made a website for a chapter of the National Federation of the Blind. It isn't up yet.

I went on a cruise.

I went on a trip to Washington D.C.

I work in Radio Shack a few days a week.

I broke my wrist and scraped up my whole arm and broozed my shoulder in a "scooter" accident, of all things.

I took a trip to visit my brother at Florida State. He is moving out of his apartment at the end of the summer and moving into a new one.

I watched every movie on all of the HBO channels on Direct TV satellite, plus some MTV, and some History channel when there was nothing else on.

I am rebuilding two of my computers and installing Linux but I am having tones of problems with everything I do with them.

That is pretty much my whole life right now.

It varies by state, but in CA for the entry level EMT-Basic certification it is usually about 150 hours of classroom training and 30-45 hours in the field practicing your skills. Then you take a county EMT exam and if you pass you are certified.

As far as the requirements to work in the inner city, all you need is the EMT certification and some guts.

robot180 03-08-2003 01:14

Don't EMT's have to work wierd hours, like I think full time EMTs work for 24 hours and are off for 48 hours, every three days. I couldn't live with a schedule like that. I can barely handle getting up at six in the morning for school...which will start next week .

you know, as they were all hyper-excited about the concept of FIRST, they liekd robots, they watched IRI, and they liked the idea of a changing game, not to mention they had an opel (automotive company) and a daimler-benz corporation nearby, along with bayer/bayer, a pharmeceutical company (i think) and Haribo all located in or around Krefeld or Toenisvorst or the North Rhine- Westphalia state.... well, we can only hope now... can't we? But i did take one of my medals and tons of pictures to try to explain what robotics was and they watched IRI...which had to be the "wow... this FIRST thing is REALLY cool thing" for them... we'll just hope... Michael- Ende Gymnasium Team? i hope so!!!

Yeah a lot of them do. About 1/2 of the EMTs where i work do that. I work what is called a 4/12 schedule meaning I work 4, 12 hour days a week then have a 3 day weekend at the end of every week. That gives us more coverage during the times the most calls come in.

i went to england for a month to complete my grade 12 english credit (which is mandatory in ontario). i have to say the best decision i have ever made in my life was to go on that trip. i had so much fun, met so many new people, and would go back in a flash. some of the people i met are already involved in FIRST, and others will be next year. in england we stayed at imperial college in london for 10 days and then st edwards school in oxford for the last 18. i absolutely loved it and would go back in a flash if someone gave me the chance. i miss it so much because there was always something to do there and you were never bored.

Elgin Clock 05-08-2003 12:31

I haven't done much except the trip to NH I took ALONE and the occasional birthday or graduation party!!

I'm so bored, no one ever wants to do anything!!

i went to workcamp this summer, for a week in orlando. plus i had band camp... Go BAND!!!!!

Kel D 10-08-2003 00:10

I went to a camp at the Air Force Academy. It was pretty cool. The campus was beautiful! Met a lot of new people but I must say the best part was seeing the fighter jets. Ahh, so awesome! They had an F-15, F-16, F-4, and F-105 and some other planes. Plus you have all the cadets...;) So that was neat, not somethin you get to do everyday.

Blacknight 10-08-2003 07:05

hmmm... lets see what I can remember...
Not too much other than being a leader at Scout camp and going out to Sanfrancisco n' that area....
Other than that I've been writing my book, taking apart electronics and using the parts for various usless gagets, oh and I lit myself on fire last night :p
Fun but don't try it yourself...

ebmonon36 11-08-2003 23:39

I worked on a friend's riding lawn mower. It is a Cub Cadet 107 built in the 60's and has been sitting behind a barn for 12 years. My brother has been helping fix it and he worked on it one day a year for the past two years. We fixed the engine but when we tried to jump start it, we fried the alternator. Guess it will sit around 'till next year and then it will run and we will turbocharge it and add NOS.:D

let's see...
:D
-shadowed Dean's brother Doctor Bart Kamen for a day at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey and got to see a spinal tap performed (I plan on going into Pediatric Oncology...).
-went on a cruise to Grand Cayman and Cozumel and got to snorkel with a shark, eel, and sting rays.
-spent 10 days in San Francisco for the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine and got to visit tons of medical facilities and talk with lots of people in the field of medicine (plus get lots of hands on experience analyzing human organs, limbs, and cadavers).
-made a movie with one of my best friends for our other best friend for her birthday (to send to her while she was up at the Boston Ballet) that made all of our parents laugh hysterically for literally a half hour after they finished watching it.
-went up to New Hampshire, got inducted into the Hall of Fame, explored to Dean's mansion, and rode a Segway about 5 times... so much fun!

Overall, a great summer.

*cracks knuckles*

I work with kids...at a cub scout camp...the "best" camp in the nation...I teach 5-10 year olds how to shoot Daisy model 499b air gun...lets see, 5 days a week, we are on call from about 6:30am to about 10-11 at night... it is 9 weeks of...HELL...due to the fact that we get bad thunderstorms, and we are forced to squeeze into a dining hall with no airconditioners...and a bunch of screaming kids can give you quite a headache...

but...

The food is outstanding for camp food... and it is a good way to meet other staff members.

In sept. i Start school at NHTI, and will be frequently visiting my amazing girlfriend in PA...but first i need to get that elusive car...
