Who's robots are driving already?

We're not driving yet. It's taking sooooo long to machine!!!! Ahhhh! How late are we if we're not driving yet by this weekend?

Jordan A. 28-01-2002 23:38

We had a prototype a while back but our actualy chasis wont move until wednesday or thursday... *cry*

but man that prototype was fun :D

AWiser 29-01-2002 00:09

Really Bad...

My team doesn't seem to realize how important it is to get things done quickly. I know that this is hard to believe (and I am very unhappy), but our team hasn't even STARTED to build the robot! We've only got a prototype, and even then it's mostly just some wood with wheels, motors, and the control system. We're doomed! :( Not only that, but no one else realizes the importance of meeting over the week. The only time we meet during the week is on Wednesdays at lunch during school (not a good idea because nothing really gets done), and after school on Fridays (sometimes). Also, we only meet about once on the weekend! I seem to be the only one (except for the adults) who realizes that we are in HUGE trouble. I hope that I'm the president next year. I would try to make sure people are better prepared. If the saying: "You learn from your mistakes," were applied here, I'd be the world's smartest person. But even if that were true, I still wouldn't know what we are going to do now. :( :( :(

ahecht 29-01-2002 00:49

We were supposed to be driving by yesterday, but we had the little incident with *someone's* bad calculations, and the parts for our new wheel mounts haven't arrived yet.

Mike Rush 29-01-2002 01:23

Just another member of the club

We do not have a mobile base yet either although the chassis and other items are coming together. Machining, errors and part shrtages are killing us....
:(

Bill Gold 29-01-2002 01:23

Our robot rolls... but just on casters (for now) :)

FotoPlasma 29-01-2002 02:10

We've had prototypes rolling on last year's drivetrain for a while, but as for this year's robot, just as Bill said, casters...

Wayne Doenges 29-01-2002 06:49

Alex, you better get on your teammates to start getting serious.
We were a rookie team last year and we worked on the bot every day after school, Saturdays and Sundays. We had our bot done with about three days to spare for practice and adjustments.
If the kids don't care about the robot than the engineers will loose interest. I know I would.
Talking about the robot doesn't get it built.

Wayne Doenges

BTW we don't have a moving robot. yet, but we are real close to having everything built.

Andrew Dahl 29-01-2002 07:18

we were driving our experimental chassis as of three days ago- we are just wainting for parts to come back from our wonderful machinist people

dahl
it better than bad its good-log!

Leon Machado IV 29-01-2002 08:09

Which one of our robot would you like to know that we're driving. We're actually driving both, very well might I add. We're gonna win. Hahaha. See ya.

ajlapp 29-01-2002 12:06

we've been driving for at least a week

we've had our prototype driving for about two weeks and the kids have been practicing with the drivetrain and rollers now for a week. we're way ahead in that department though and it's mostly a product of luck and extra hard work by a few of us with a lesser amount of credits. we all go to school full time, most are taking 17 or 18 creds, but we have 24 hour shop access and a waterjet cutter so we can rip parts in minutes instead of hours or days. good luck to everyone.

Anthony Lapp
team 221 ----> now 857

gniticxe 29-01-2002 12:29

Well, our chasis was just completed yesterday so we "attached" an experimental drive train to it (with C clamps :) ) and drove it. It only went for 2.08 seconds though.

dixonij 29-01-2002 12:48

not driving yet

We have a pretty cool prototype and chassis. our actual bot has yet to come. being a rookie member, I have no idea if we are behind schedule.

Madison 29-01-2002 14:50

Well, we don't yet have our rolling bits and pieces, so we're not moving around - but, we do have our chassis completed and will have most of the control hardware mounted by tomorrow. Then, it just becomes a matter of dropping the drive train into place (and hoping it works!!!)

There's also the little matter of my forgetting to order roller chain. So, right now, we're counting on the wind produced by the muffin fans as propulsion :)

Colin Bohannan 29-01-2002 16:07

Our base is up and running, but we still are behind schedule (not that we are ever ahead of schedule). We have only two of the motors running but all looks good.

Matt Reiland 29-01-2002 20:16

We ran on Saturday and noticed some flex in one of the drivetrain gearboxes, worked till 10 last night for reinforcement now thats fixed. Next problem, the power is ruining the wheels fast enough that there was rubber bits all over the field. To all who haven't found out: Moving a goal is really quite easy forward and back. Rotating a goal out in front of you takes an incredible amount of traction if the goal is at a standing stop. We have no problems once on the move. There is going to be such a fine line this year between maximum power/traction and carpet destruction it isn't even funny. I thought we had the balance but back to the lab for something else for traction. One good note is this is the first time we were driving before week 5 so there actually is time to fix it before shipping it, what a novel idea.

Good luck to everyone:)

rocky115k 29-01-2002 20:53

Well define running... We have a moving base, a really nifty frame, however they're not connected as of yet. Our drive train is being completed, and the rest of it is coming together, but since we have a base, we're driving.

SharkBite 30-01-2002 09:00

We have enough to drive, and we were towing the goal last night.... but we definitly have a lot of refining to do

Mike Norton 30-01-2002 09:29

I see there is alot of robots not even moving yet.

I would think that would be the first thing you get up and running by now.

Our robot has been up and running for almost two weeks. this is how we can find out if we can pull or push many goals. without this knowlege you are pretty far behind.

Our task at hand is all the other things the robot has to do.

1st get base running
2nd look at how to pull or push goal?
3rd look at how to pick up ball?
4th look at how to pick up robots?
5th Look at how to score in both end zones?

Finished 1,2,3
we are now working on the 4th thing :D

I just have to say you only have 3 weeks left use it wisely

isn't modules great.

Dave_222 30-01-2002 13:14

Our robot has actually been driving since a couple days after the kick_off.

Metalhugginman 30-01-2002 15:23

Manual Overdrive is ROLLING!

Our team (343) got "Manual Overdrive" up and running last night. We robbed some parts from our retired robots and were able to enjoy the thrill of a functioning machine after many long days and nights.

To those who seem to be a little behind, have faith. Help you team as much as you can. We are pulling for you! We hope to see you at a regional and THE national.

aka Scott White 30-01-2002 16:07

Driving? Hahahaha

We have a prototype that uses our drill-motor drive train from last year. If drives in straight lines beautifully, and can move about 12 M.P.H. with me riding on it, but turning 90 degrees involves waiting for 20 seconds and melting the carpeting. Our drive train system will arrive mostly by next thursday :(

David Kelly 31-01-2002 06:24

we started driving on tuesday. ours sure does plow!!:D

AWiser 31-01-2002 13:57

We are doing much better than I thought we were, please disregard my earlier post. I'm sorry to have caused any trouble.

Ken Loyd 31-01-2002 16:22

driving

The only driving going on in beautiful Gilbert, Arizona is the team driving Mike Rush "CRAZY".
We are very close to movement (I refuse to say what type of movement).

PS. Sunday is Super Sunday because our fearless leader, the one, the only, Mike Rush turns FORTY. Happy Birthday MIKE!!!

Elgin Clock 31-01-2002 16:43

Our chassis is probably about 90% done, and pneumatics are working for the "system". Sorry can't tell you what the "system" is it's classified! We are not drivable yet but should be by Friday!

Yay to planning ahead!

team222badbrad 31-01-2002 22:42

We are allmost done!!!

The only major things we need done is the (skins/decals) and to finish up my secret extendomatic.

I am not gonna say what that is!!!!:D  hehe

We also need to practice, fix bugs, and beat it up a little to see how durable it is?? Its almost time to post pics wouldnt you say????

Bad Brad.

Well I am going back to study and sleep. Then I wake up browse the forums on here. Go drive and test and build a little. Then come home and browse again. Then go back to sleep and school

Well that planning ahead think definately does work..... I guess after I left the meeting on Weds. to go to class, my team had the bot running!!

Yay to planning ahead! x 2

James Crivellone 01-02-2002 00:57

Our base is machined and done, sitting in our lab, hehe, we should be moving around by Sunday.

Oh and to team 258, Thanks for Stokely :D

Bill Gold 01-02-2002 01:20

BP_360:

You're welcome... I hope Stokely is having fun up there with you guys. I called him on his cell phone as he was driving away from one of your meeting.... Sounds like our robots will be similar in strategy. Please tell him we miss him, since it's kinda hard/expensive for me to call long distance to chat. But also tell him that if you guys qualify and go to Nationals... we'll be there and eager to beat him :-D. Good luck to 360 Degrees!

bmusser 01-02-2002 13:26

Chassis is up and running

We have been driving our chassis around a little. We discovered we had to strengthen some things and that traction was a problem. After a few tweaks we are back in business. Just working on a couple sub assemblies now.

Jeff Waegelin 01-02-2002 16:46

Our base is welded and we have mounted the wheels, but we are still waiting on a couple of parts for our gearbox to come in so we can finish the drive train.

Ian W. 01-02-2002 17:46

Heh, about time, our wheels finally came today! Our robot chassis is in pieces (as of 4 PM this afternoon) because someone wanted to paint it. Yes, you'll all know which is the Smithtown robot...

Anyways, we mounted a big piece of plywood with all the motors, speed controllers, relays, etc. that we need, so I could start programming. As of 4 PM this afternoon, 99% of the programming is done! It feels so great to get something done, although i know i'm gona have to change the whole code. :D

We have most of the stuff to make our robot move, we just need to put it all together now. Considering we're a rookie team, i'm surprised we're so far (from what i can tell).

WernerNYK 01-02-2002 18:34

Wow, considering that we are a rookie team, we seem to be right on pace with all the other teams, if not ahead of them!!

We thought we were extremely behind, but we had our robot driving around last Saturday!! (Jan 26)....makes us feel good...

And we went with a very simple design this year since we are rookies, thinking we wouldnt have enough time or knowledge...and here we are ahead of the game ;)

We hope to have our gripped mounted and working tomorrow afternoon  then we have two whole weeks to tweak/test/strategize/"make it pretty"

cant wait till the competition :) And BTW, we got our Tshirts and hats today...and our new safety glasses (stylish!) Hehe....

Wetzel 02-02-2002 02:02

Should be driving with a compleate bot on Monday.

At least, thats the plan...

Matt Reiland 02-02-2002 08:12

I can't stress enough to teams that are not driving yet to get something out there (almost anything at this point) to see if your design for traction and power is going to work. Don't let the goal fool you either. To move it forward and back is pretty easy, we don't even spin a wheel. To drive around with one or two connected to your robot, let's put it this way, your hot rod ferrari robot looks like its caught in a Michigan Snowstorm sliding and spinning and not going where you think. I am SURE there are teams out there that will be able to 'handle' the goals quite well. For the rest of us that goal weighs more than your robot keep that in mind and good luck

Mike Schroeder 03-02-2002 01:43

Our Team Practice with our robot (the final product) wedensday we practiced moving goals and driving around

DART darting

As of midnight last night, Hampton is running...that is, moving. Still many features to build, though!

Eric
De Anza Robotics Team

Khalicl13 03-02-2002 16:42

We, here at the Strath Haven Robotics Club, have had a moving chassis for almost a week now. We knew what we wanted to do from the end of the first week. We kept it similar to last year's chassis so we knew what to do. After recieving the chain and sprokets from Small Parts, we worked endlessly to finish the drive system. In fact, there were some of the students, me included who's been in school for 12 hours straight working on putting the drivetrain together. The only thing that held us back was the service from Skyway. We were delayed for a few days because they didn't manufacture the pneumatic wheels that we ordered until the day they were suppposed to be shipped.

But all in all, we are happy with the drive train. When I tested it, we can pull about 100 lbs of force on carpet from an 80 lb robot which includes most of our mechanism. That is some friction. I love these wheels.

arctic warrior 03-02-2002 18:13

a little behind

We drove the chassis around for the first time on saturday. It went well, now we have to adjust some gearing and finish the sub-systems and we are off.

Our robot should be driving around this Tuesday. We had a 3-week argument about the drive system :D

aka Scott White 09-02-2002 14:49

Finally!!!

Our various drive train parts all arrived on thursday, with our FIRST supplemental parts, and we drove on Friday. We're putting the finishing touches on our "self-tracking super-grip tread" system today, and should be driving well in an hour or two. Our robot is so low riding that it appears to hover and float as it drives around.

DaringCommander 10-02-2002 17:39

We just have some finishing touches on our robot. Everything is built but the electronics needs to be programed.

Wetzel 10-02-2002 18:48

We need to lose 25 lbs.
:)

Greg Perkins 10-02-2002 20:00

team 60?, hahaha

this years robot is sooooooo sweet!! it is definalty a force to be reconed with. we have only 3/8 of an inch of ground clearence, (praying for no obstacles!) i think it will win nationals with our design. if ya'll are wondering there will be pics of it after wednesday, check out our thread for more info later

Let's Roll!

Team 811 finally pulled all systems together for the first time today, and while there is some tweeking to be done, and some artwork and exterior lexan to be snazzed up....all systems are GO!

We are about 2 lbs overweight....and that was after the crash diet we put ourselves on this past week.

We have a demo night at the local Mall in Nashua this Wed night....all the local Southern NH teams will be there "showing off".

We are a rookie team, and we are Psyched!

I hope to see some of you other Southern NH teams there!

Tonight we drove our robot for the first time. It was a beautiful, beautiful thing. The other subteams have yet to integrate their parts but for now, x-bot is looking good.

Amadkow 11-02-2002 00:11

my teams robot is up and running except for the gear shifters we still need to do the programming for them

Kris Verdeyen 11-02-2002 01:36

We finally got going this weekend - we have our goal grabbers (mean looking things) and our base up and running. Our theoretical top speed was going to be 13-14 fps, not sure what it is for real, because we don't have enough carpet to go that fast. :) We're out to the goals from a dead stop in under 2.5 seconds.

Only trouble - we're 25 pounds overweight.

It will be an interesting week, to say the least.

Jeff Waegelin 11-02-2002 07:17

We have our frame and grabbers built, and we have 90% of our gearbox parts in and ready, but we are still waiting for cylinders for our arms and a few gears for our box. They should get here today (hopefully).

Pamela 11-02-2002 14:13

Wednesday night at the Pheasant Lane Mall will feature Southern New Hampshire teams... and one Mass team from Tynsoboro! i can't wait to see what everyone has, It's going to be really cool driving pretty robots around the mall!

BTW - Merrimack team 166 finally got their bot moving last night! woohooo, those 36 1/2 hours I logged on the transmission over this weekend finally paid off!!!!!!!!!

Wayne Doenges 11-02-2002 14:21

"A Force to be Reckoned" is a copyrighted saying :) It is our motto for this year.
Take a look at the photos, in the picture gallery, of our robot systems. IMHO the goal grabbers are awesome :D

See you all at the regionals and nationals.

Wayne Doenges

BTW with everything on the bot we are 36 lbs overweight  So we are going modular.

Brian Savitt 11-02-2002 15:09

Doesnt every modular part that you want to use in competition have to be inspected and weighed in at 130lbs?

36 lbs is a lot to lose good luck!

Team 811 of BG in Nashua will be there. We are a rookie team, and we can't wait to meet up with some of the other great teams in the area.

I was an Engineering Team helper on Team 42 two years ago, and we have another Engineer who was on the Nypro team for about 9 years....but other than the two of us, everyone else is totally new to this.

BTW: We finally got all our robot subsystems bolted on and moving about yesterday (Sunday, 2/10/2002) and while they need a little tweeking, things look pretty good. :) (albeit 2 lbs overweight  )

So, I hope to see you at the Pheasant Lane Mall.

Eric Tarnowski 11-02-2002 15:38

I think every possible combination of modules has to be weighed in at 130 lbs. Some on correct me if I'm wrong.

Eric

Wayne Doenges 11-02-2002 16:04

You are correct.
Every configuration has to be under 130 lbs. You don't load everything onto the robot and weigh it.

Wayne Doenges

check the thread about weight advice, my team had the same problem and this thread is full of good ways to take care of it

Well, we got our bot moving a couple of days ago... Clocked it at about 30 mph. Man does that thing move. Anyone want to drag race after the Canadian competition? j/k

Its not supposed to go that fast, but it is kinda cool. We found the gearing glitch, and it is running today with twice as many motors to boot. We have powerful motion. <breaker trips> TANJIT! Except for that. Ah vell... We will get that fixed.

I think you are wrong. The way I read rule M12 it seems as though everything you will use must be on during the inspection including the weigh in. After that you can take things off and use only some parts but I do not think you will be allowed to have several weigh ins.

This has been answer by FIRST. If you read the Q&A from FIRST you will find out that you have to wieght your robot as it would be on the field. so if you do have different config. you need to wiegh them in at wiegh in.

So you take off one thing and put something on as long as each config. is under 130lbs.

we have 3 configs
