The AKA Profile Field.

Well. It's been up for a while now, I'd like some reactions/opinions. Vote in the poll, post comments if necessary. Thanks.

I think my misuse of it says it all :)

JVN 30-07-2003 21:04

I think for the most part it is abused, but... I do enjoy the extra space to write something.

Perhaps if you expanded on the "custom title"? Is that possible?

Maybe I'm just being silly, and should add stuff to my signature instead.

Ryan Albright 30-07-2003 21:22

I like it cause some people put there real names and i mean i dont think people are abusing it i like to read what people write

Tytus Gerrish 30-07-2003 21:43

for me the aka Field is totally redundant SO, iT is my Duty to write something ridiculous

Thank you, you've helped me finalize my decision. Check the announcements forum in an hour or so for the details.

I say just make your username your name, or include it in your signature/title, or just don't go to competitions expecting people to know who you are by name. it's easy.

knowing people by real names makes people more inclined to talk, so if you're anti-social, don't put your real name down. if you want to actually meet people, don't be dumb, and don't abuse what's given to you to make meeting new people easier.

Is it ok to put our AOHell s/n in there if my real name is my user name?

Yes, since you are known online as your AOL s/n, most likely.

it would feel incredibly odd to have my fullname as a "username"; one such as this one (used for loggin in to the site); there is great urge to keep my username in lower case and at most 8 characters long; anything else would be the end of the world !!

so i guess the problem is after reading this and seeing all the different username is that peope interpret username as a different thing; some think its their first / last / fullname / nickname or something like this and others (like me) think its a shortened unique identifier of me on the board used for loggin in

because of this the "aka" field has many interpretations also; if people put their fullnames into the username then the aka field is pretty much free game as it seems but as i read and see others are using it for fullnames; and others like me use it for other things (like my "crud" name which is probably only common to team 190 members)

so my suggestion would be to make a seperate and not required fullname field which would leave the aka field for whatever people feel like putting in there; on the forum the default indicator would be their fullname prefered over the username field; so if they filled in their fullname, it would show up instead of the username; thats just an idea; its how i would have done things; but then i'm pretty dumb anyway

For real! you know many people i met, and how many girls I picked up?

I'm fine with the AKA field.

Brant Bowen 01-08-2003 11:23

I beleive that the AKA field is good for another screenname one might use or something like that. I use it for my general screen name, which i use on everything from email to tigerbolt.

If people want to make dumb titles or say anything else they can put it in their profile of the line under their screenname after 150 posts.

Actually, it's 485 (give or take a few posts) posts to a custom title...but anyways.....I like the AKA field. I have no purpose for it, but I like it ;)
