question about contacts
I have a little problem. I might have to wear glasses all the time now and I don't want to. I would get contacts except for one thing, my eyes are so sensitive that if anyone or anything touches them, I go crazy. It is like tickling an extremely ticklish person. When a lady was putting eye drops in my eyes and she pulled my eye lid up to get it in, I punched her in the face...well, she blocked my punch, but you get the idea.
Anyways, my eyes are so sensitive that I can't open them far enough to get contacts in and I can't stretch it open. I was so mad about wearing glasses all the time so I forced my eye open and I got it open almost enough to get my finger in between my eye lashes. That was only the left eye though. I was wondering if anyone thinks that it would be enough to get contacts in and out. I was also wondering if anyone else has very sensitive eyes like that. |
Sounds like me.
Keep poking it at (no pun intended) it took me a long time to get it. Once I got them in once I could do it over and over again. And little hint, when you do get it in DON'T BLINK! for like ten seconds to be safe. |
I might have trouble with that then. I blink constantly. The more I try not to blink, the more I have to blink.
|
I just got contacts today... I had a little trouble at first. I couldn't get my eye open wide enough for long enough without blinking. After about an hour of work, I was able to do it, and the second time was much easier. It's definitely something that will take some getting used to.
|
I used to be the biggest pansy ever when it came to sticking stuff in my eye, but I managed contacts.
After a bit of practice, you will become nearly immune to things touching your eye. Seriously. Get the contacts, and practice taking them in and out. You'll get a demonstration from your eye doctor or whatever. It took me probably twenty minutes to get them in the first time, and I think the lady who was assisting me was getting pretty irritated. You will need to hold your eye open wide enough to see the white above and below your iris, and after you put the contact in, you'll need to keep it like that for a few seconds. It might seem impossible now, but you'll manage. I promise. |
Yeah, I'll just stick with the glasses...
Plus, you can't play with contacts when you're bored in class ;). |
That's what you think, who here escaped a math test because he popped a contact and had to go to the nurse? *keeps hands down* I'm saving it for trigonometry next year.
|
I prefer glasses anyways, just for the sake of aesthetics.
|
cotacts are soo much trouble; i never really bothered with them; i bet some people think wearing glasses is a lot of trouble but i bet its insignificant compared to contacts
|
I'm one of those people that (even before getting contacts) would put their fingers in their eyes just to freak out people like you, so adjusting to contacts wasn't so bad.
but yeah. once it's in, don't blink for a couple seconds, or it'll come right back out. and contacts really aren't that troublesome. glasses always came off at inopportune times (during sports, for example) and got in the way of safety glasses. wearing contacts is like having 20/20 without lasering your retina. I put my contacts in in the morning, (it helps waking up, too - ::snore:: ::POKE:: ::POKE:: "ok! i'm up already!" - haha) and take em out at night, toss em in the trash (i have dailies) and go to bed. either that or i leave em in cause i don't feel like taking em out. whatever works. glasses were always lost or broken or fallen into odd cracks between my bed and the wall. and i could never find them. |

I bought myself contacts when I was 16 and I absolutely hated them and threw them away three weeks after getting them.
I recently considered getting them again but my beloved Picklehead threw a fit when I mentioned contacts because he loves how I look in glasses. The other thing that would stop me from getting contacts is my photophobia which is a sensitivity to light and excessive contact wearing can cause it which would not be good since I already have it. My light sensitivity causes migraine headaches with severe vision distortion. Normal vision distortion for migraines is black spots, for me, black and white becomes super sharp, and I get a weird sort of tunnel vision, and it often looks like things are melting (first time I ever got a migraine was in high school and I thought I had stepped into the Twilight Zone because I looked over at my friend and her face was melting, it was really freaky). I currently take Inderal to prevent migraines and MaXalt to treat them if the Inderal doesn't work (or if I forget to take the Inderal, which is more often the case), so I don't get them much, but I wouldn't want to increase the chance of getting one by wearing contacts. Heidi <========> nothing here to see, move along. |

I am worried that if I actually do get them in, I won't be able to get them out. I was also wondering, if I blink when I put them in, and someone said they would fall out, would that hurt? |
Getting them out is the easy part, and it normally doesn't hurt when you pop em out by accident or on purpose. Also if it feels weird after you put it in, stop, take it out, clean it and put it back, you'll regret leaving it in later.

I am at the point now where I can open my eye enough to see the white bellow the irus, but the top eye lid lines up with the top of the irus so I can't quite see the white part. Another problem now is that I have really long eye lashes. When I open my eye, I am not sure if I will be able to get anything in because my eye lashes cross in the center.

Here's a picture, but you probably won't need to hold your contact with two fingers like that. |
I have trouble looking at that pic. It grosses me out. I won't be able to eat anything else tonight, I lost my apetite.
I tried lifting up my top eye lid but it I can't fit my finger in like that. It just pushes it down farther. |
It was weird today (first day of school) when I walked into my first block class, I was the only person with glasses. I pretty much felt embarrased that I had glasses. Now I really want contacts, but I don't know if I can handle getting them.
Also, any of you who have seen my glasses know that they are the most embarrasing glasses to have. I don't care about saying it here because no one here, who will meet me in the future, will see them because I don't wear them at competitions. |
Hm... I actually like glasses - they've grown to be a part of me.
But if glasses just aren't you and if contacts are painful or aggravating to use --> LASER EYE SURGERY :) |
Laser eye surgery won't do anything for me. I have OA. (ocular albinism) I have this thing that looks like a virtual reality helmet and wiehgs like five pounds on my head. I could read at 20/10, my aquity now is 20/300, average is 20/20. I could also read words that were too light to see with the normal eye. It weighed so much though, I can't use it. My neck would hurt after wearing it for about two minutes. In case anyone is interested, it is called the ELVES, and a later model is called the Jordy Glasses.
Btw...I didn't count the battery which weighed about three pounds. |
I play soccer and as a goalie have gotten kicked in the head rather often (that explains the soft spot in my head too) so one day I decided to go get contacts..
I was just like you- except because I'm deaf those eyes are all I'm living on.. It took me 5, yes thats right, 5 appointments to get them in. But ever since they've been an godsend- not only for sports, but robotics competitions, vacations, etc- The moral of this story- Don't give up. If I could do it, so can you.. good luck and peace out.. ::bows:: ::exits stage:: |
I just told my parents and I think they are making an appointment. I am getting so worried about it now. I have a stomach ache and I am having trouble sleeping. I can't stop thinking about getting contacts, which is why I keep posting about it on here. I haven't felt this bad since the day I heard that I had to have eight teeth extracted. (about five years ago) I feel like they are going to cut my eye lid off or something even though I know that they won't.

Great...My mom just made the appointment. It is for some time in September. I think I am changing my mind about getting them. Isabel's picture didn't help either. (the one of the person putting the contact in their eye)

robot 180:
dont worry about getting contacts...i have them, and though i was a bit apprehensive at first, i love them to death now...dont worry about sticking your finger in your eye...its a lot easier then it sounds...and the picture that isabel put up...i dont put my contacts in anything like that. good luck with getting them |

Well thanks everyone for saying this stuff, but I am starting to change my mind. If I do get them though, should I get the colored ones. I heard of people that try to change their eye color. I have blue eyes and I don't know if that looks good or not because I can't see peoples eyes. (unless I get right in their face and look real closely, but I don't think anyone wants me doing that)
|
the coloured ones look nice on some people, but dont suit everyone...personally, i think blue eyes are really nice, and i would love to have them, except they dont suit me. if you do opt for colour contacts, keep in mind that you dont want anything that looks really fake and unnatural.
also, if you do get contacts, you dont have to wear them every day and so you can just keep them for special occasions and sports...thats what i did when i first got mine. |
I find the colored ones a lil' freaky, but that's just me (I find a lot of stuff a lil' freaky ;)).
To me, you should wear contacts just as much as your glasses (only when you need to I think). |
At first, contacts can be very difficult to put in. It took me an hour the first time I was there. I got one eye in but couldn't get the other.
Now in the morning I can just pop them in, no problem at all. For me, I use my left (non-dominant) hand and use my middle finger to pull down the lower lid. Then I use my index finger to pull up the eye lashes and push them against my eyebrows. This leaves my right hand free to insert the contact. I tried it the other way and couldn't get it to work. If you want to prepare yourself early, you could wash your hands thoroughly, apply some disinfectant (ie contact clensing solution), and work on your technique of keeping your eyelids open. Then, insted of putting a contact in, gently touch the white part of your eye. Just work on it every other day (you don't want to irritate your eye too much). |
It scares me so bad to even think about it. I try pulling my bottom eye lid down all the time, but when ever I try pulling up the top eye lid, my finger is so big that it actually pushes it down further. I also tried sort of touching my eye, but I jumped when I felt it.
By the way...Isabel was helping to contribute information, but the last few times I saw her she was wearing glasses and I would assume she wasn't wearing contacts. |

Though I'll have to go back to the contacts when robotics is in full swing again, because my safety glasses won't fit over my normal glasses. No big deal, lack of peripheral vision is starting to bother me anyway. |
I just went to the appointment. I couldn't open my eyes wide enough. (of course) He tought me which fingers to use and told me to practice for ten minutes every night until I can actually touch my eye lid. Then, I can try stretching it open.
|
Best of luck to ya 180.
|
Also the first thing i did when I got my contacts almost 4 years ago now was the doctor had me were them only for an hour the first time and slowly progress to a full day. And i found that that helped me adjust to having them in.
|
I am not worried about that because I already use glasses, sometimes. The contacts will be 8x what my glasses were though.

Haha...in may my optimologist said i didn't need glasses...but i can't see...i'm pretty sure i've got a bit of nearsightedness trapped in me...so i have to go back in february before i can go for my driving test...
