QotW 08-17-03: Heigh-ho
This question is coming at you from the dairy fields of Wisconsin, America's beloved Cheese State.
Today, long time watcher and first time writer (LTWFTW), Joey L., asks, Question of the Week 08-17-03: What, if anything, did you do for a summer job? Were you able to work alongside your team's sponsor or do something else interesting and exciting? Was it just another summer lifeguarding at the community pool? Flipping burgers? I'll be away next week, so your regularly scheduled question of the week will be provided by JVN. Enjoy! |
This was my 3rd (and last) summer working for Publix (a supermarket chain in the southeast)
|
I ended a system administrator job at CraftMaster Manufacturing back in June. The rest of the summer (while I was well enough) I worked at Bonanza (Steakhouse) and a Bed and Breakfast that I grew up in.
Hopefully, no more crummy food related jobs in the future! |
Heheh I get to move plants, pallets, and vegtables.
|
I worked (and still do) at Garden Ridge being the cashier/ coke machine filler-upper/ whatever section they want me to be the sales associate of.

Everybody's gonna hate me for this...
This summer I worked at Hamilton Sundstrand with the EMU guys (the Space Suit, Hamilton designed and fabricated it) I've had this one huge task all summer. What it is, is to look into past history and double check on all the Engineering Changes made since the program started (change in design), and make sure all of them had some kind of testing done, some convincing rationale, or deem the EC non life-threatening. This task was a necessity because of what happened on Columbia. Apparently having the tile hit the wing was a circumstance when somebody did some physics and calculus and figured that it wouldn't do much damage. Things like this happens... but it can't hurt to double check. We do our best to prevent anything from going wrong. "Do it right the FIRST time." p.s. I was a life guard two summers ago, uck! |
The school district Of Palm Beach County Is paying me to mentor the lego league team Not that bad since i was gonna do it for free
But thats not summer, Sorry |
This summer I created a new website for our team (I guess when the old one is 3 years old w/ only 1 picture, it needs to be updated), of course the road clean-up, working on the museum, and of course, the ever essential activity for summer (lets be realistic here) SLEEPING!!!!!!!!!:D
|
well i worked at damons as a cook for the summer but i did it during the school year to. I started my own companey this summer which is doing pretty good. I sell and install verticals and woodblinds. That has been alot of my summer and then at nights i go to school for cocmputer certification so that was my summer
|
I have a regular job working in the kitchen of a resturant, plua a summer job as a day camp counselor. I also have a research placement in a robotics lab at the University of Pennsylvania, and I'm doing a little bit of a computer/home electronics service and installation business.
|
This summer I worked for Clarkson University. I got a research grant for the Physics Department, and spent the summer writing a new laboratory experiment for the Freshman Physics class (PH131).
Basically, the lab is designed to be a more open-ended experiment, involving projectile motion. It is designed to challenge students to model the vertical motion of a dart as it exits from a spring-loaded toy gun. There is no *right* solution, and students will be encouraged to learn at their own pace. This is part of a new "learning trend" at Clarkson that I'm glad to be a part of. This summer was really a vacation for me :D ;) . I didn't have very strict hours, and got to do whatever I want (including trips home, to Battlecry, and to IRI). Previous 3 summers I have worked as a CAD draftsman. I put in 40-50 hours a week doing engineering/drafting work for a small firm that works in the pulp&paper industry. (I spent a lot of time measuring up/drawing equipment in paper-mills.) It was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot. Before that... yeah... I lifeguarded. Get this guys: They PAY you to sit on the beach and watch the girls! If you don't watch the girls, you don't get paid! It's win/win! Why am I doing this enginerding thing again? I think I found my dreamjob at age 14....:p edit: Someone was whining to me, so I should clarify. I was just joking. Lifeguarding was a lot of fun, but it is a serious job, people put their lives in your hands. It is something to be taken seriously. /edit |
I spent my summer working for a school supply store called School Stuff. I learned a lot about business and marketing, and made a lot of new friends. Plus, I got to meet a lot of cute little kids! Always fun. :)
Before this, I've worked at an insurance office (for help with filing papers), a major newspaper (as weekend help... putting the inserts and ads into Sunday papers), a pizza place (isn't that a mandatory part of high school?), and a local grocery store chain (helping people bag and carry out their groceries). As far as I'm concerned, I really lucked out with my 'college job' - the people are great, the place is wonderful, and not only do I get off for FIRST competitions, my boss comes with me! ;) |
This summer, I worked in the auditorium at my school. We rent it out to people and work thier shows. Every weekend was a dance recital that would last all day with not much to do for us. So i took advantage of this situation and read a robot book and got paid $10/hr. It is a nice job. This allowed for a lot of time to spend with the team and was able to do all of the summer activities.

No job for me this summer unless you count going over to friend's houses and fixing their computers/software for the price of pizza :)
I took summer school instead so I could fit in an extra AP Science course. |

I've also been doing some side jobs fixing computers. I like what I do, and it pays well. Although after reading John's statement, I'm tempted to go into lifeguarding... :D ::flies away before someone decides to kill me:: |
OMG! Look at this summer job posted on a Cornell website!!!! Ay Caramba!

it puts the lotion on its skin... |
I called - it's a real job... too bad I don't have a car :P Eh, I'll find out who the girl is once school starts.
Hm... another question for this thread - what are some cool places to VOLUNTEER? |
I was going to work doing data entry. But luckily I didn't get the job and vacationed in Tennessee instead. It was going to be 8 hours a day, weekdays, every week for June and July. It would have paid well but I would have done the same thing every week and lost all my summer.
|
I'm doing research, which is work for a professor and in this case not paid. I do get a whopping 1 honors unit ::sarcasm:: but I'm doing it more for the experience and the oppurtunity to work with a great professor. I also get to work on my own hours, which was nice for my vacationing and such.
While it probably isn't as intensive as John's research, being the political dork I am, I find it really interesting. I get to go through congressional and tv script databases to determine how liberal or conservative power political think tanks and special interest groups are based on their influence on congressional agenda setting and media. [that would be the abridged description]. Yeah, I've probably bored half of you to death but perhaps if I'm lucky, you'll get to see my name cited somewhere in book that the professor's writing. |

I figured since all school year I would be basically in up to my neck in school books, medical books ( certifying for EMT), and engineering books I decided to take the summer off and go in the complete opposite range and teach wilderness survival and orienteering! To think I got paid to teach what I was teaching my self in my back yard when I was 7 yr. old and have been doing for fun ever since out in the boondocks
P.S. THIS IS MY 100TH POST!!!!!!!:yikes: :D :) q=~) |
