you shoulda seen my car (though i do believe its breathed its last...)...i had a 91 mercury station wagon...remember those back in the day when everyone had them. with the wood paneling for the side and stuff? that was my car and i loved it. you think station wagon and you think maybe slightly larger then a sadan, dinky engine...in reality it was wider then my moms suburban, and actually longer too. i never did find a parking spot i fit in lengthwise, and only a few that i fit in width wise
as far as the engine...5L, V8...i suppose it might be considered dinky... |

I really have no idea why anyone likes SUVs. No one uses them for their purpose so I don't get it. I'm fairly happy having a Red '99 Dodge Dakota waiting in the parking lot for me although I definately wouldn't have a problem if it turned into a BMW Z-3 Roadster while I was at work. ;)
Matt |
Wait a minute...
SUVs...4x4s...I do see a difference...
SUVs are those small "spin-offs" of the real thing (4x4) made to look good at a reasonable price. The main attribute that makes SUVs popular, their "sleek" design, is also a flaw that allows the vehicle to flip upside down in a split second.... 4x4s, now those are the "ish". They are rugged, dependable and last a long time. They are also the only things a few of the posters in this thread can comfortably drive in...you know, the height thing... ~Wow, totally went off tangent there.... |
the other problem with suv's is that theyre a danger to other drivers, cuz you cant see around them and stuff
plus who wants to own an suv now with gas prices as high as they are? as far as off roading...i once took my station wagon on a little spin through the woods...it was fun...i was following my friend (who has a tahoe) and he went through the woods and i was too lazy to go around...everyone was shocked when they saw the wagon come out though and suv's are fine if theyre used to go off roading or cuz you have 5 kids in youre family, or pull heavy loads...but if youre gonna use it for off roading or for heavy loads there are better things out there, pick ups and such |
Gas Guzzler
Yeah speaking of high gas prices... my bronco only gets 8 miles per gallon in the city... so at 1.68 a gallon for gas it cost me approx. $40 to go from an empty tank to a full tank.. which only takes a little more than a week...
About the height of SUV's... i like that they are tall cuz it keeps people off your butt when you're driving down the interstate... plus i like sitting up higher.. it gives the feeling of control..lol:D I think an SUV with 4X4 is perfect for off-roading.. i dont like pickups cuz they can be so light in the back.. |
yeah if its tall you feel like youre in control, but how are other cars supposed to see around you? if someones behind you in traffic its impossible to see the car ahead of you's break lights. also when youre at an intersection trying to turn one way and an suv pulls up next to you to turn the other way its impossible to see cars coming from that direction so you cant tell if its safe to turn
also...$1.68/gallon!? what kind of gas do you get? around here its $1.89 or so at least for the lowest grade of gas... mike who feels even more ripped off then he did before |
You only pay $1.68 for gas!!!
I'm lucky to find gas for under $2 in LA. Joe whose old junker gets approx 30mpg |
Gas Prices
$2 a gallon?.. holy cow thats a lot...
I just filled up today with regular unleaded and it was only $1.58 a gallon...lol |
$1.58/gallon!???
...thats rediculous...do you have to rub it in? |
Cheap gas
It got down to $1.54 the other day in Indy. We may have cheap gas, but we have EXPENSIVE groceries. Some survey that they had last month, Indiana is known for haveing the the most expensive groceries in the country. My mom can't go to the store without spending almost $300.
|
yeah well, groceries may not be as expensive here as they are over there, but it all evens out if you have 5 kids in youre family...
|
The cheap stuff is about $1.90-$2 here... and my '88 blazer gets about 22mpg :(
|
Spring of '99
I remember the week after we got back from our first FIRST Robotics competition in the spring of '99, when the gas got to the price of $.70 per gallon. Man that was nice. I could fill up my car for no more than $7. What a difference 2 years makes.
|
seriously...especially when you consider that the gas companies basically (at some point) take that extra $1.30 times many many lots of gallons and its all profit...
mike who wants his $1.30 per gallon back |
ok..can I be your typical girl for a second here? I guess even all of you FIRST guys are typical guys, wanting to talk about their cars. OK. There..I said it.
~Angela who found gas at $1.45 (go Florida!..lol) |
One advantage of not having a car.
I guess thats one advantage of not having a car:D But a disadvantage is having your parents take you and pick you up from robotics meetings some late nights. Thats why I got a job at McDonalds this summer to try to buy a car. I plan to quit in December for obvious reasons:) Even though I hate my job I still get paid and hope to have enough to buy a car by the time January roles around. What is the best first car for a 6'3 16 year old?
P.S. hey littlefish180, my nickname at school is slinky. So I like you little picture up there.:) |
In MD gas is about $1.69 a gallon. Well, you can find the watered-down stuff for cheaper but I digress. We also have the second highest income on average for a state (behind Alaska) and are about number 5 in standard of living. So there :-p.
But about the gas companies taking the extra cost in profits: It's not the gasoline companies, it's OPEC. OPEC controls how much crude oil is produced and therefore controls the cost for oil on the open market. They're the ones that get the extra profit by not supplying enough. Just so you know, if OPEC was a group of companies in the United States (as opposed to a group of countries, which it is), OPEC would be causing a little thing known as "restraint in trade...." Todays lesson in monopolistic practices of the world is brought to you by.......no one because the big companies don't want you to know they're monopolies. ;) Matt who doesn't know where that came from.... |
More useless gas info
I was so excited today as i drove past the gas station... i looked up at the sign and saw $1.48 a gallon.. i'm so happy cuz i can now fill my tank for less than $40....:)
|
even more useless gas talk..
i can fill up my tank for less than $15. ok, so i also have to go get gas practically every 3 days. lol...but hey, $15 is a lot compared to the $5 it used to take. :) if it took me almost $40 to fill up my car, my bike would be getting a lot more use. oh well...:p
|
Small car
It only takes $15 to fill up your car cuz its dinky.. .but i do like the exercise i get from rolling the windows up or down....lol...
Kyle- who loves power windows and locks..:) |
BP Rocks!
Bought gas at BP this morning for $1.44. Later in the afternoon it shot back up to $1.49. Glad I bought it then.

Andy B. ps... to the rest of you... they are dating. |
molly you only pay $15 to fill up youre car cuz the tanks small right? so dont you just have to refill it more? which means you pay the same as the rest of us, just you do it more spread out?
|
I don't really know Molly's car so I can't give an exact answer but I can speculate. I'm betting her car gets much better gas mileage than say, an SUV (or insert other large vehicle here). The auto industry tends to put larger gas tanks on vehicles that get poorer miles per gallon because then you don't have to fillup as much. That's why I wish I could stop driving the stupid minivan and drive the Ford Escort. :-D
Matt |
this is true, but did you notice that it was mentioned that she doest have power windows? that leads me to believe that she has an older car, which dont tend to have as good gas milage as a newer car
also she said she has to fill up every 3 days (i think) |
Not having power windows has nothing to do with having an older car. It has to do with not buying the top of the line car. For instance, my family has a '99 Dodge Dakota without power windows. If you tell me that's old, I would just like to point out I've been in FIRST longer than that trucks existed. And they do still make cars without power windows. And as to filling up every three days (I'm not sure if she posted that or not), it depends on how far she travels every day. Don't make a conclusion til you have enough facts. :)
Matt |
Correct me if i'm wrong, but don't they still make cars that are stripped down with nothing? No, powerer windows, doors, cheap radio, no cruise, and they still get good milage.
|
Quote:
my conclusion was, granted, based on very few facts, but i was using the ones i had...also: she is a high school student: how far could she possible drive in 3 days to go through a full tank with good gas mileage? |
I'm not sure what kind of cars you buy but cheap ones tend to have smaller engines (less gas consumption) and are smaller overall (again less gas consumption). Basically a bottom line Dodge Neon (which is fairly cheap) will get much better gas mileage than say a Ford Expedition (can someone explain to me exactly why that vehicle exist?!) which costs a whole lot more. And as she said, she has a very small gas tank (10 gallon by my estimate) so needing to fill up every three days is not unheard of.
Matt who wonders why he's arguing about this.... |
i didnt mean that they put a monstrous engine in a small cheap car...i meant that they dont put the most efficient engine in it.
and i dont know why im arguing about it either...heres an idea to settle it: what kind of car do you have molly? and what's its mileage? |
....
I have a quite a story for all of you...
Today one of the new radio stations in our area, "hot 93.7", had a promotion at the local Shell gas station, that involved the public getting gas for $0.937 / gal, all day....... ~If only I had a car |

1969 VW bug.
You could drive one of those things for hundreds of miles before filling up. To bad they had about 10 dollers worth the safety features... We had a great refurbished one for a while. We had to sell it to save on the insurence, it broke my heart to see it go. They still rule. -Andy |
to help out w/ the confusion...
ok..my car isn't that old. it's a 96' neon. (yea, yea...we can stop the laughing..) :p i drive it all the time and all over town, i couldn't tell you how many miles a day or anything, but it gets quite a few. it has really good mileage, and i bet i would get more if i was a better driver. (at least that's what my dad says..lol..) but yea, i have to put more gas in it pretty much every 3 days, but that's not going from a full tank...if the tank is full, then it takes bout a week, but i usually just try to keep it at about 1/2. so there ya go..lol..the info on my wonderful little transporter. :) well, have a good day!!
-molly oh yea, and baker...being stuck w/ kyle isn't that bad! :D |

I wish I had a vehicle.
Don't feel bad Jessica. I'm busting my butt working at McDonalds this summer trying to save money to buy a car. I just don't know what to buy. I'll probably have to get something pretty old. My grandmother has a '98 Dodge Neon that is about to fall apart. It doesn't have power windors nor power locks. The window roller fell off one of the doors. Those are cheap cars, but good on the money.
|
I believe my grandmother also has a '98 Dodge Neon (I was mentally trying to figure out the year and I think that's the correct year) but her's is in just fineshape. I think a lot of it has to do with how well you take care of the car. Then again my grandmother's car is seldom driven. I've never owned one but I have driven it and I find it nice. :)

Two words for all of you complaining about gas prices: electric cars..They get like 65 miles per gallon b/c they barely use gas at all. A friend of mine has one. Then again, I have yet to see a four-door version of one, many people say they're totally ugly, and they can be costly. OK. Never mind. Another good idea gone wrong..lol
