They have a 'duct tape club'? lolz. I know there was a scholarship open to high school students who were willing to wear to a prom a self tailored duct tape prom tux/dress or something like that. I think the scholarship was worth about $2,500. Ahh, duct tape, so many uses so little time... :)

Oh hey!, duct tape now come in different colors (neon yellow, green, pink and orange) other than the familiar metallic/silver color we have all come to know and love.

I was always under the impression that the first use of duct tape was for heating/cooling ducts (hence the duct tape). Then again, I've also heard that someone did a study on how efficient duct tape was for use with heating/cooling ducts and found it didn't work. Personally I'm much more of a cable tie fan (not barlocks!) anyway...

Oh, goodness....here starts that argument again ;)

Anyway....know what we found at Staples on tuesday (other than "Robot Arena")? Travel duct tape! its just a piece of cardboard instead of the cardboard circle....with duct tape around it...its freekin awesome ;)

So if there are so many uses for Duct Tape then why is it not on the additional parts list for FIRST:confused:

I think we should start a petition to allow the glorious marvel known as DUCT TAPE in our hardware!!


BTW, isn't there a team known as the Duct Tape Bandits or Warriors or something???? I wonder how they felt when they saw it missing on the hardware list????

My interpretation of the rules may be incorrect, but I believe the last couple years (well, this year at least) that duct tape was an allowable substance. And please note that I'm doing this by memory so I may be off. If you'll notice there was no ban on adhesives this year and they may have been on the additional hardware list. Anyway, duct tape is most definately a fastner and without the ban on adhesives, duct tape should be allowable. Frankly, I wouldn't want to use duct tape on the robot (well, we did in '98 but that was merely decoration).

Matt who wonders if robots will get less sturdy next year because people will realize they can use duct tape....

My understanding of this is as follows:
adhesive-epoxy, super glue,jb-weld, etc (allowed)
duct tape-adhesive + backing material (not allowed)

Now, if you wanted to make your own, you could probably get away with that, if you could find a good backing. Note that electrical tape is specifically allowed in the AHL(revised Update #2), but ONLY as an electrical insulator. Based on this, I'd say that no other types of tape are allowed. But, that's just me...

I can't remember the rule that we felt invalidated duct tape from before but I didn't see anything specifically preventing it. I think that duct tape would fall under the unlimited fastner rule though.

zip ties....
 

In the 2000 competition, zip ties literally kept my robot together. There's a picture somewhere, or all the zip ties on my robot. It was pretty sad, but pretty funny as well.

I thought one of the reasons that they didn't allow duct tape was because of the looks. I don't think they want a robot made completly of duct tape. Although it would be neat to see;) But don't get me wrong, duct tape can be used to make some pretty cool stuff. Like these

If it moves and it's not supposed to, duct tape it.
If it doesn't move and it's supposed to, get out the WD-40.

Thats pretty much all you need to know for home repair.
