Registration Open - How are we doing?

Registration opened yesterday. I'm surprised there wasn't a post about this on CD.

I did a quick count. Looks like there are about 450 teams registered. Is this fast or slow?

I saw some rookie teams as well. Does anyone know what the first rookie team number for this year is?

Detroit is already "sold out." Great Lakes is nearing capacity.

Are we going to reach 1000 teams this year? Or, will we see the first dip? (BTW, does anyone know how many teams actually participated in last year's competition?)

Nate Smith 30-09-2003 10:02

Here's a link to a page that, despite what the header on the page says, lists every team who is registered for an event thus far...it was at 484 when i looked at it...

http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/FMPro...-max=all&-find

Jack 30-09-2003 17:47

what's up with team # 100813. :)

I saw it somewhere else while browsing the regionals. Looks like a whoops in the first db. heh :)

Gamer930 30-09-2003 17:52

There was 800 +- 100 teams last year i think.

Note: At 4:50 Central time we have 540 teams registered.

My guess is that we will pass 800 and be close to 1000

sanddrag 30-09-2003 19:14

It looks like there were 787 teams last year. http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2003/allteams.htm But it's wierd, every time I look at that page the number is smaller. I've seen it at something like 814.

Andrew 08-10-2003 08:43

Registration just hit 700 teams (10/08/03).

http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/FMPro...-max=all&-find

New rookies = 1354-1239+1 = 116

i think its that teams temporary team number...every team gets one before they get an official one.

and right now...the team count list is 711

Steve W 08-10-2003 23:07

As of now 682 teams have signed up for events. 4 events have max (as per shown spots) 3 more less than 10 spots. Events are filling up fast. It will be interesting when things are opened up.

gburlison 12-10-2003 01:12

Looks like the number is up to 727.
btw there are 458 open spots and only room for 1185 teams to compete in regionals.

and whats up with Sacramento? are all the California teams going to make it their second choice?

dez250 13-10-2003 14:33

as of today, 10/13/03, there are 742 teams registered for events shown at http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/FMPro...-max=all&-find

Lets keep those teams coming!

~Mike

Dan 550 13-10-2003 16:23

Uh, do you have to put a down-payment in to register? I heard it was $500. If that's true, then 550's okay, but that's all we have for now.

SarahB 13-10-2003 17:00

The down-payment to receive the new controller is $500, but its not refundable. You should make sure you'll be able to pay the $5,000 registration before you make it.

Okey dokey.

Jeremy Roberts 13-10-2003 18:56

I'm pretty sure that as a veteran team you do not have to pay the deposit. Only rookies do.

Allison K 13-10-2003 20:10

We (rookie teams) have to pay $500 before we get our Edubot. Other than that its just $5,000 by December 5th.

You're right. I had assumed that everyone would need it because they were receiving part of the kit but closer reading reveals that's not true. There is one exception, however. Teams that didn't participate last year are getting the full EduBot kit so I would assume they have to pay the deposit as well.

Dan 550 15-10-2003 15:18

We just registered for the J&J Mid-Atlantic in NJ. There's 12 spots left there (of 50).

Joe Matt 15-10-2003 15:21

I'm betting that we hit 850 teams this year.

If FIRST's off-quoted growth continues (40% annually), we should hit 1120. I believe the goal for this year from FIRST was to hit 1000 teams. We may just be able to do it.

Matt

Wetzel 17-10-2003 14:20

Up to 770 teams.
The first rookie team number this year appears to be 1238, or close to it. They hand out numbers in order, and 1232-1237 are not registered. Starting with 1238, the numbers are contiguous.

Joe Ross 17-10-2003 14:51

according to this page: http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2003/allteams.htm the last team last year was 1238.

patrickrd 17-10-2003 18:51

Welcome back!

The following teams were inactive last year, but are back for 2004:

350
410
546
601
995
996
1076
1080
1085

Welcome back!

Registration has reached 868 teams!

Rookies are up to 1392-1239+1 = 154.

Teams at Championships has reach 53.

Actually there are only 807 teams. The total on that pages includes all the teams registered for nationals twice.

Andrew 22-10-2003 22:53

I thought the number of teams had jumped rather steeply. Thanks for catching the double count.

Looks like its going to get tough to track how many actual teams there are this year once second regional sign up opens in a few days.

If you want to get a count minus the duplicates, copy the table into Excel and do the following.

1. Start in a new column, say E, and give E1 the value 1.
2. Give E2 the formula: IF(E2=E1,0,1)
This sets the value to 1 if it's different than what's above, and 0 if it's a duplicate.
3. Paste this formula for all valid cells in E
4. In another cell, take the entire sum of column E
5. This value should be the current number of teams signed up to at least one event.

I'm pretty sure this is not the most efficient way of doing this. If anyone is quite savvy with Excel, a more direct formula would be appreciated.

Joel J 23-10-2003 09:07

No need for Excel to eliminate the duplicates. FIRST does it for you.

Same here. LETS COMPLAIN!!! ;) :p

Andy Brockway 23-10-2003 13:57

Numbers being skipped happen every year. There has not been teams 717 through 720 (or even higher) the last two years. Our team was the highest number in 2001.

Maybe teams sign up on TMS and then never follow through.

The lack of teams 717-720 was a "mistake" on FIRST's end. In 2002, registration started at 800 rather than 717. It went up to 999, and since the OI couldn't display more than three digits, they had to go back and start filling in other team numbers.

Is this an officially linked list? I hope it is... maybe someone at FIRST finally decided an official full list was a good idea.

Not so! Team 782 was next us in 2002 in New Haven. There are also many more teams between 717 and 800.

If you read the rest of M's post, you'd see that they started at 800, then went back and filled in the teams between 720 and 800, because of technical limitations in the OI.

Officially linked list? This is the result of me asking the FIRST database the question we really wanted an answer to. Its official in the sense that its coming directly from the FIRST database. Really, all I did was lookup my post from last year and changed the year in the query to the server. Click on the smiley at the end of my last post if you don't understand what I mean.

Holy smokes...

Registration for second regionals opened up today at 12:20. Within 10 minutes, the 21 open spots for the Midwest Regional were gobbled up.

I'm assuming that some of the other regionals had similar happenings. Good job for all teams who got where they wanted to go.

Also... an updated team count is 856.

I know that the open capacity of CMP reduced. But I seem to remember some of the other regionals having larger capacity (such as St. Louis).

No, its not just you. The capacity did drop. Many regionals keep a few spots in reserve for last minute rookies and/or teams getting the NASA grant (as the case may be). So if your really interested in a particular Regional get on the wait list. If your near the top then there is a good chance you'll get a spot.

Andrew 03-11-2003 08:28

When the NASA sponsorship comes out, we should see an additional 50-100 teams. However, when the payment deadline comes in early December, the number of teams will probably drop by 5%-10%.

I suspect that 900 is the outer limit for this season.

I think thats their temporary numbers. They dont get permanent numbers until they sign up for a regional.

BandChick 07-11-2003 11:21

915 teams! and we still have PLENTY of time...

maybe we'll get to 950 this year? or close?

Ken Leung 07-11-2003 11:54

It is unfortunate that some of the veteran California teams from last year aren't on the list anymore. I have a feeling it's not just in Bay Area that that's happening. I heard a lot of teams couldn't raise enough money to pay for the registration fee and have to fold.

That's probably one good demonstration that money can prevent FIRST's growth. When there simply isn't enough to go around, teams just can't afford to do FIRST anymore. But that belongs in another thread.

I am very happy to hear there are 915 teams registered. It only seems like yesterday when there were barely 200~300 teams back at 99' for Double Trouble. Back then the NASA Ames regional was the only west coast regional. Now we have 6, thanks for Jason Morrella getting extremely addicted after attending the 99' regional.

New feature to CD

Hey I just talked with our favorite webmaster for CD, and if you look in your upper left corner of CD, you will now see an auto updating counter of teams registered with first that are displayed on the Official FIRST Team List . So as i am typing this, i currently see 919 teams registered. Thats about 20 teams in a 24 hour time span. If we keep this rate up, we definitely will break the 1000 team mark by December 5th.

~Mike

P.S.- THANK YOU BRANDON

Joe Matt 07-11-2003 16:49

Unless some teams drop out of their 2nd regional and no one signs up for a 3rd, there's no way to make the 1000 mark. There are only 78 spots left at regionals and even as of now 7 of the rookies aren't signed up for a regional yet(as shown by their really high number, eg 1000791).
