FIRST College Connect is now UP!

For those of you who missed BuzzU, a new website is up and running. Please register yourself and tell your teammates about FIRST College Connect:

www.firstcollegeconnect.com

Enjoy!

Matt Leese 01-10-2003 16:51

Perhaps adding a registry of colleges with teams and who to contact about joining the team would be useful. There are many people here at RIT who just never manage to track us down.

Matt

Erin Rapacki 01-10-2003 17:05

That could be done.

Everybody, keep posting ideas. In a few days i'll send this link to the website group so they can make the changes.

Thanks!

What if you screw up and put the wrong graduation year, like me?? :ahh:

For now, you can email your request to webmaster@firstcollegeconnect.com (or post it here), and I'll change it manually.

I'll try to implement some way to change Graduation year and college this weekend. Suggestions on how best to do this are appreciated. I was thinking of when you sign up emailing a password, and then being able to go to an account page and change anything if you need to. The less obstrusive the better.

Ashley Weed 01-10-2003 17:45

looks good so far... except it would be nice to change ones information if a change in school occured.

... registered!

WakeZero 01-10-2003 18:22

For now I put my own contact information onto your list, but it would be great if you could have a list of teams already sponsored by universities, like the team we have sponsored at the University of Arizona. A link to a team's site would also be nice. All in all, great job so far!!! ;)

Ken Leung 01-10-2003 18:26

Also, it will be nice to be able to see a complete list of every college with who's where, instead of having to look up each college at a time.

Could be event better if that list can be sorted by college name alphabetically, or by team numbers, or by student name.

Sounds exactly like a searchable database

I'd love to sign up but my school's not on the list!

Its Simon's Rock College in Great Barrington Mass.

Thanks,
~Gabriel

Sorry about that, my parsing script seems to have failed on Colleges with an apostrophe. The school is now listed though!

Excellent job Erin. Keep up the good work.

Erin Rapacki 01-10-2003 22:28

I just contribute some of the ideas... thank my team for implementing them.

Andy Triboletti rocks!
(so does the NU-TRONS website team)

Elgin Clock 01-10-2003 23:59

No community colleges on the list??

Arghh.... lol

SpaceOsc 02-10-2003 13:12

Wetzel 02-10-2003 19:02

No cc... :-/

Even with 60k+ students, Northern Virginia CC isn't listed.

Hi Erin,

Here are some suggestions:
(1) Sort the school names alphabetically! They appear to be kind of sorted but not very well at all. It took me about 2 minutes to find Cornell on the NY list, and then another 1 minute to find RIT.
(2) It would be nice to be able to see the entire list at once, like BuzzU allowed you to do. (of course, if a school has no people, don't display on master list).
(3) Name and email and graduation year is boring. I like to see more information, such as what team each person was on in high school, nickname, profile. Basically if you click on the name you get more information.
(4) The links (red on blue) on the main page clash a bit. I'd suggest orange (or any other lighter hue) on blue
(5) This needs to be advertised very well for it to work at all. You should have FIRST send the link out in an email blast, if possible.

Otherwise, great job! Finally there is some way to get in contact with other FIRSTers at colleges.

Thank you all for your input, in a few weeks when all the debugging is done we'll definately make this a well advertised site.

Keep the ideas coming!

(the users are the best at coming up with the problems, thanks for your help)

That's huge!

I've added around 1100 Community Colleges to the database.

Good luck finding some FIRST comrades if you're looking to start a team. (shouldn't be too hard with that many folks :) )

edit: Also fixed the bogus ordering problem, and now allows viewing colleges by state.

DUCKIE 04-10-2003 21:59

I am depressed, yet ellated in some strange way, to be the first person to register in Delaware.

I'm second so how should I feel? At least I'm not alone. :)

Andy, I noticed a minor error while viewing the list. After using the back or forward buttons, The "State" pull down box remembers your selection but the "College" pull down box assumes you are in Arkansas. I don't know if you can fix that in php (I don't use php).

Great job on the website Andy! It is almost as good as AvonGrove.com.:D

Matt Attallah 09-10-2003 23:16

Hey now!

Are technical schools that don't begin w/ the state's name involved?!

I'm in IL and am currently attending Universal Technical Institute (UTI). It's in Glendale Heights, IL. (I'm in the city Carol Stream.)

If ya' get that up - I'll Register! :D BTW - my grad date was 2003

BandChick 10-10-2003 00:56

i'm the only Rutgers girl (or person for that matter) registered

and the sad part is, i know other FIRSTers here that should be registered

(ah the losers!)

Aaron Knight 10-10-2003 07:23

Kinda disappointing to see I'm the only registered FIRST'er at Syracuse University....and I know for a fact there're at least one or two more...

Aaron Lussier 10-10-2003 07:37

Just realized that I put the wrong Grad date, I though it was when you would graduate from college, not high school. I graduated from High School in 2003 not 2007

My Bad

Aaron

AndyTriboletti 12-10-2003 16:49

Hi folks, I've made a couple changes:

*Added UTI in IL
*Added a modification page, linked from the front page.
*Added an optional profile field.
*Fixed a bug with seeing no registrations from your college after you've submitted your registration.
*Added some stats to the front page.

Let me know if anything else needs work. :)

Re: FIRST College Connect is now UP!!!!

Just a reminder that FIRST College Connect is still running and to register yourself in order to keep our database current.

Thanks!

Re: FIRST College Connect is now UP!!!!

Perhaps a place to put the team number(s) of the college. Also a main contact person for that college would be nice too.

Re: FIRST College Connect is now UP!!!!

It appears that the website for FIRST College Connect is now dead. Are there any plans to revive it?

Erin Rapacki 29-06-2007 09:35

Re: FIRST College Connect is now UP!!!!

Not to my knowledge. I'm not sure if NU-TRONS want to continue to own it (any responses?). But I still think its a good utility if somebody wants to take ownership over it and build up a new site.

I haven't done anything with FCC since it started, so please consider my involvement as complete (and I'm not at NU anymore).

Re: FIRST College Connect is now UP!!!!

I don't really know much about this venture, but I would be willing to host it if there some others that could take over development and debug. I've got some knowledge of web coding, and it's growing everyday, but I'm not in the place to be able to administer a site such as this yet.

Any takers??

Also,
Who can we get the old stuff from, or do we have to do start from scratch?
