Windshield Wiper Motors

Our new motors still seem to be grounded to the case...how do we fix this problem?

Official Reply: Grounding

There is a fix that Mike McIntyre and Justin have the information on. Contact them at OTCNE for the details.

Wiper Motor Grounding

Actually, we do not have an easy fix. Last year, one of our students opened up our motors, found out where the internal circuitry was connected to the case, and and snipped the grounding lead. Justin and I did not see how he did it. Keep in mind: if you are only using one of the wiper motors, this is not necessary. Also, if you are able to isolate one of your motors from the chassis (easier said than done), you do not need to take this precaution. Since there seems to be sufficient interest in this fix, I will contact the student and/or a DaimlerChrysler rep. to learn the technique: we'll try to arrange a mini-workshop this week for anybody else who wants to do this; keep listening here for an announcement.

Wiper motor isolatiion...

I have taken apart a wiper motor and have Isolated the ground... There are other things that can be done also to make these more friendly for robotics.

If you want, I could provide a procedure for these mods....

What is required is a few torks drivers and a solder iron and some wire and solder wick or solder sucker and an exacto knife...

I would be willing TO DO the mods for any team that wants them...

Just let me know... It takes about 20 minutes per to do once you have the materials collected...

A Generous Offer

That's a great offer, Paul: I think you should pick a day and time that you could do this; we could all meet you somewhere for a mini-workshop (OSTCNE is always available).

The wiper motors are ready to go

Jim Zondag has prepared 10 motors and Paul Rodgers has agreed to do any additional that need to be done, so contact me if you want to alter your wipers or trade your wiper motors in for some with ungrounded cases.
