2005 Rochester Regional @ R.I.T

Just wanted to know how many teams would be willing to come to Rochester for a Regional in 2005? this would help in planning something like this! Thanks in Advance!

Team Leader - #191 Xerox/Wilson X-CATS
Team Adviser - #1126 Xerox/Webster SparX

Of course we would. We're 2 hours away and we have two veteran members @ RIT right now.

Matt Leese 12-10-2003 22:32

I wanted to vote: "Yes, we're hosting the regional."

Matt

JVN 12-10-2003 23:13

Clarkson University 229 will be there.
We're talking about whether we'd rather compete, or volunteer to help out.

(Is it too early to ask if you need a head-ref? ;) )

But we will definitely be there! Gotta support an upstate NY regional!

kpugh 13-10-2003 08:59

mmmmmmmmmmmm
FIRST and Nick Tahoe's. It just doesn't get any better than that!!! :D
It's been way too long since I've had a garbage plate!

KenWittlief 13-10-2003 10:35

Well since RIT is going through all this trouble, I guess we can make the long trip from Fairport NY. We'll probabally have to get a school bus or car pool or something - ten miles is too far to walk!

Oh and before I forget:

WHOO HOOOOO!

WHOO RAH!

[im almost done]

WAY TO GO!!!

[ok, im done for now] :c)

Aaron Knight 14-10-2003 22:16

Although I'd prefer Syracuse, Rochester's a great spot for a regional 8^)

MasterZeus 04-11-2003 15:03

Yeah, I guess we will go too. Ken was right, 10 miles is too far to walk. Maybe we should charter a bus or something?

Oh and YEAH for Rochester!!!!

rees2001 04-11-2003 17:22

With all the fun we're having at meetings setting his thing up I figure we might as well show up. What I would like to know is, are the other upstate NY teams planning on attending. You know, Lockport, Syracuse, Ithaca and the others. Also, are any of you interested in helping us start up some more new Upstate teams. If you are I'll do some leg work if you can get me some contacts. BTW, Chad it's nice to see you in here snooping around.

MichalSkiba 04-11-2003 18:21

Definately; if only we had the money.:(

Yes! I am quite sure team 639 here in Ithaca would be willing to come.

By the way, Ithaca NY is named after the greek town, Ithaki, which is on the island of Ithaka... maybe that's where the extra I came from? You know, Odysseus was the king of this island. We've got a statue of Herakles, too, who was on Ithaka.

Ewe no, in for years of posting hear on cheifdelphi eye have had very few spelling errors and have tried to never correct somebody on there mistakes. In won e-mail eye misspelled a word bye placing an eye where an eh belonged & eye got chastised by three people four it. Eye am sorry for the insult, it was not intentional. Eye do greatly appreciate everyone pointing out the mistake. Thanks.

BTW. I honestly liked the history lesson. I do enjoy finding out neat little facts about weird stuff.

Now can we please get back to the point at hand. Making the Rochester Regional an Upstate NY regional… Yes people from Canada, and other states are welcome.

patrickrd 05-11-2003 12:01

I was not insulted by the spelling mistake :) People do it all the time. I love random facts & tidbits of history. YES, anyway back to the topic on hand:

Us college students at Cornell were thinking of trying to start more than the one FIRST team (639) in the area. I think there are a number of schools in surrounding towns that would be interested in having teams. But I don't think Cornell will be willing to fund more than one (although we can try asking), so we will need to rely on NASA grants and local manufacturers and such for funding, hopefully they can find places to sponsor more long term. I'll try and encourage our college FIRST organization to get going on this... Although our hands are full right now, starting up & mentoring a new lego league team :D Hopefully we can get a rookie team or two to attend their first regional ever in Rochester 2005 :)

The problem around Central New York region I think is finding companies to sponsor. I know there are enough in Ithaca (which is a city, kind of) to sponsor our team. But I'm worried that in anywhere less populated, there is not enough economy (for lack of better words) to support teams. On the other hand, I think between the school districts and small companies, it may be possible. So anyway, I will take initiative in the Ithaca / Tompkins County area to try and get more teams started. Any other volunteers from other upstate NY regions?

Another idea: Why not start a regional robotics forum for Upstate NY area? We can start off just with a ChiefDelphi forum, and then maybe it can grow enough that we can have meetings one or two times a year. This would help foster ideas on how to start teams and keep them going in low-economy areas, provide support for those struggling, etc... Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Patrick

That's actually exactly what we are thinking as a group up here in Rochester. We are having regular meetings to help form new teams & get organized for the 2005 regional. I think the idea of using Cheifdelphi forums as a means for communications is a good idea to get started. It is a great place to gather larger groups of people from a wider area.

We are aware of the economic issues of the schools in rural areas. There will probably not be a NASA grant for the Rochester Regional because there is no NASA facility around here. We do have a group of people working on helping teams find funding & other resources. If you know of schools that would be interested please let me know I would be more than happy to help you get them started.

Thanks

Aaron Knight 05-11-2003 16:12

NASA has an office of some sort in downtown Syracuse....doubtful but a possibility :)

You might get Lockheed Martin outta Syracuse (Salina really) to chip in, you never know....

Hey, we've done a lot to get this far! <shameless plug> Come to RIT! We even have an official Student Government Recognized Club called RIT FIRST (I was the President for 2 years...just recently stepped down)! We only became Student Government Recognized in February but we've been a club recognized by the College of Engineering for a while. </shameless plug>

Okay, but seriously, we're working hard to get this thing going up here. I hope all of you can make it. Come look for me next year!

A thought

It might be a good idea for some members of Rochester based teams to go to this(even if there are no Rochester teams competing at the event) and do some networking for the FInger Lakes Regional. Many of these teams are potential participants and should be reminded of the virtues of comming to Rochester.

best if served covered with hotsause and mustard

eww...mustard?! It's all abour covering it with ketchup! That's the stuff! It sounds pretty gross...but it's pretty good. My first garbage plate was with Matthew and Jeff (?) and Joseph (?) when I went up to visit years ago. So, I had my first garbage plate before I even came up to RIT.

Oh, and for any of you vegetarians...the cheeseburger patties are optional...you can get a veggie plate...but I'm not sure I'd trust it. :)

You'll have to wait until Oct 28th to sign up for a second regional. Right now there's only 9 spots left open! And if you take a look at the team list, there's an awful lot of low numbers! This is going to be quite a competition!!

If there is still a spot left when second regional regs. open up team 25 is planning on a trip to Rochester. We figure the Rochester teams have been to NJ so many times it is time to return the favor. We already have trip approval too.

It will be a fun season....

Unfortunately I didn't get to the computer until 12:20 last week and we didn't get a spot. So we are on the waiting list- for whatever that may mean. At this point my team's entire season is the NJ Regional since all the regionals within reach of us are in the first few weeks of the season and all of them filled up immediately. It's kind of disheartening.

I guess the off season will have to suffice this year.... but we'll be out there- stronger than ever and ready to play.

Remember, every regional has spots reserved for late registering rookies. As it gets closer to December 3rd, those will open up if they haven't been taken yet. Be sure to keep checking for open spots at the other regionals. And, since you're probably near or at the top of the waiting list in Rochester, you should get a spot.

Of course we'll keep watching but I'd rather see your team find some local schools to start new teams and take those spots.

I think we're up to about 8 rookie teams in the area. We aren't really expecting any more at this point. I don't know if we'd be able to provide adequate assistance to many more teams anyway.

Sorry Rees-

I am afraid that when we were left hanging for so long we went and registered for South Carolina. Lets face it, the registration closed a week ago and, if the Rochester committee hadn't made the move today, we would have been left with nowhere to go. SC seemed happy to have us. So, with regret, I told FIRST today that we decliined the move off the waiting list. Obviously this procedure of having teams wait without word until after the registration period is not working.

So I guess we look to go north next year. If nothing else we'll see everyone in Atlanta.

Re: 2005 Rochester Regional @ R.I.T

Well unfortunately some of that could have been avoided. I sent an email to FIRST a month ago to withdraw from the competition (we were registered for Rochester). I recieved a phone call yesterday asking where I wanted our KOP sent. So I had to resend the email asking to be taken off the list for Rochester.
Hopefully FIRST will be working out some of these kinks in the registration process.

I'm not sure that this was a Rochester move. We had been ready to open up those few extra slots for quite a while. I believe that it came from above to wait until December. I don't know what their reasoning was in this.

South Carolina sounds like a treat for the students. Enjoy!

I have no idea but yes all the rookies are in the Planetarium and most of the veteran Rochester teams are in Eisenhart (except for QX Robotix who's with you guys).
What Surpises me the most is 229 Division by Zero isn't going to make the trip.

Re: 2005 Rochester Regional @ R.I.T

I thought the kick off went well. The field elements are a lot bigger than I initially thought seeing the in person than from looking at them on the screen during the broadcast.

Given the game I think it's going to be an interesting season and I can't wait to see what teams come up with this year.

See you all at the Rochester Regional. I'll be there with 1507. It's a rookie team but not all the members are rookies.

Good Luck to everyone.

Well with the robots shipped and ready to roll it's time to fire this thread up again.
To the Finger Lakes Regional participants: how did the build season go?

Re: 2005 Rochester Regional @ R.I.T

This season, we built the robot in CAD prior to construction. In the past, we never did a complete model. Although we felt like we were getting behind in the construction of the physical robot, the model proved to actually give us a little more time than expected. Things fit, drawings were exact, and we had little changes to adapt to.

Other than autonomous, our robot was first fully working on Saturday Feb 12. Since then, there have been much testing, practice, and refining of components in addition to making spare parts and taking off a little bit of weight (well, we can't be perfect).

We look forwards to showing off our robot in Rochester soon!

If someone has Nyquil hand it to him.

639 will battle rain, snow, sleet, ice, falling tetras, and other robots to make the two hour drive on Rochester.

But seriously, I hope the weather doesn't deter any teams. Good luck to everyone travelling to a regional event. See you in four days.

I just got finished up with the second stage dying my hair, ehh.. better than sometimes, worse than others... but all in all, its in the spirit of the competition! :D

I can't wait to get myself back into the full swing of competition! I've got a long three days ahead of me filled with classes, packing for not only the Rochester Regional, but also the Pittsburgh Regional and Spring Break. I leave Lehman Wednesday night for the drive home to catch the team bus bright and early Thursday morning!!!!!! :yikes:

Can't wait to see you all there! Good Luck!!! :]

This will be my 1st of 6 followed by Pittsburgh, Detroit, Waterloo, GTR and Championships. I can't wait to get started. I sure hope the weather gets better cause coming from Toronto can be a bad drive in bad weather. Wishing everyone a great season and if you see me at an event say HI. I don't think that you could miss me if you tried. :D

Are you comming up to MC?

Re: 2005 Rochester Regional @ R.I.T

I will be announcing. I believe that "The Voice of FIRST" will be the MC. For those that are not sure who that is, Blair was announcing the mock game at kick-off.

Will any team or RIT group be broadcasting the regional as a webcast?

I was in Rochester Last week and got a chance to check out the field house. Does anyone know where/what the pit setup will be/look like? Possibly like SBPLI last year?

Thanks,

I'm not sure what SBPLI looked like so I can't comment on that. I know that the built in seats will be used on one side of the field and bleachers will be brought in for the other half. The pit setup will be behind a curtain on one half of the field house. There will also be an internet "oasis" available. I can't comment on the exact pit setup.

Matt

Thanks alot, that's pretty much how SBPLI was except the pits were behind the bleachers. I'll see everybody there and good luck.

Thanks again,
