CD is broken.

Are all the pics on this site missing for anybody else? I had to search around to find an invisible "new thread" button just ot post this.

--------edit--------
It works in Mozilla though.

Clark Gilbert 25-10-2003 21:47

Maybe...

I had problems ealier w/ the "go to new first post" showing up on the portal page for the past few days.

sanddrag 25-10-2003 21:55

Same here. The reply button is not loading in the thread. And the only image I see of the 10 newest on the portal is that of Swamp Thing. This happened a while back too. We had a thread on it then. It was some internet worm or something I believe.

EDIT: No smilies either and the same thing is happening with eBay.

<music>Where have all the pictures gone? Long time ago...</music>

Allison K 25-10-2003 21:58

Good its not just me

Hey the smilies are gone too

Allison

computhief263 25-10-2003 22:02

i think this problem maybe more of a IE glitch then a problem w/ CD, b/c i have similar problems when i try and load this page w/ IE but it works perfectly fine when i load it w/ mozilla firebird.

try downloading the latest IE patch, that might solve the problem

computhief263 25-10-2003 22:05

umm...yea, i just realized patching IE doesnt fix the problem...so i dunno

BandChick 25-10-2003 22:11

I'm really surprised to hear this, I've had no problems viewing anything on this site, and I run IE. As well, I tried it in Netscape and had no problems. Perhaps it's just a slow day on the server?

Yeah....I coulda told ya that, and I'm glad I'm not crazy. But as tom (I think) said above it works perfectly with Mozilla Firebird.

miketwalker 25-10-2003 22:56

Yea, I had told Brandon about this earlier... and I rebooted and it worked fine then, but now the problem happened again with this thread. and things like the smilies aren't visible and all... yet some images DO work, which makes no sense.

Solace 25-10-2003 22:58

i'm not getting pictures on any websites, not just CD

Same here. I tired it on my dad's and brother's computers though and all is well. So it's not an internet problem, it's an end user problem.

XP Pro here. But my dad's and brother's are XP Pro too and all is well. This is really annoying.

KyleGilbert45 25-10-2003 23:40

I've also been having this problem today, and its happening on a few other websites i visit. I'm running XP and Internet Explorer 6.

When i surf the net on Opera 7.11 all the pictures show up just fine so maybe its something to do w/ Internet Explorer 6?

Matt Krass 25-10-2003 23:51

Yeah...maybe some kind of new HTTP protocol update? I never expect Microsoft to be on the ball with these things........*puts on open-source anti-flame suit*

David Kelly 25-10-2003 23:54

this has happend in the past a couple of times. i think its some kind of internet worm... but i think this time im blaming it on the sun flares!!!:ahh:

Beth Sweet 25-10-2003 23:55

Yeah, me too, it's a pain isn't it? I did finally figure out the purpose to the bottom line thing that says at the end what your mouse is on top of. I knew there was a purpose for that..... Anyone know whats wrong?

GregTheGreat 26-10-2003 00:12

I to am having problems. I am runnung IE 6 and XP pro. It is not just this site, I have been expierencing problems on many other sites as well. I am thinking a worm, ne body really know wwhats going on.

Something major must be wrong...

www.slashdot.org

You know when /. is dead, it's the end of the world.

OK not really, but close enough for a geek.

If this is a worm, this could spell mucho disastero for the Internet. Slashdot is probaly one of if not the most consistent and well managed sites on the 'net, and it's apparently been brought down...

Ok, I think I got it,

It a Chief Delphi problem....

After going to CD you can't see pictures on any other site, but if you close Internet Explorer then reopen it (don't go to CD) you can see pics at other site. I dont know how to explain other website peoblems, except they are probably not related. Some idiot must of hacked CD for the fun of it, Norton Internet SEC. aint giving me ne warning, so it must be something being hosted on CD.

Well At least I found out how to see pics on other sites....

I think the problem is just with Pro.

-Greg The Great

(I am still going through all my online programming crap trying to see what could be doing something like this. I am sure it is just some person that wants to feel important by doing a stupid act, to impress a few of his "hacker" friends. Its things like that, that really get me mad)

Madison 26-10-2003 01:00

The problem is with Pro. I just tried IE6 on my quasi-roommate's laptop running XP Pro and I experienced the same problem.

Edit: That is to say that I corroborate, not to make it seem like my computer genius developed this idea on its own.

Thats What I figured.

Hey, I just lost CD all together for about 10 minutes, indianafirst.org also lost contact with the forums. Nothing was working, ne1 else see this? Brandon or someone else might be fixing the bug.

I lost it for a while too. The only pictures I see missing now are on the portal. Also, slashdot came back just a little bit after the first word it was down.

I think you are reffering to the "12:47am bug"..... every morning around this time it does that..... not sure why, probably something to do with backups on the server or something...

I am still not getting portal pics, and galley pics, or button pics on post. I did have the segway pic, but I just lost that also.

Tom

It may have been, in the confusion of all this online mayham and me reading through books and html scripting and stuff like that I forgot about that.

-Greg The Great

sanddrag 26-10-2003 01:10

Umm, I had buttons then I didn't. Never had the gallery pics. I had profile pics for a while but they seem gone now too.

GregTheGreat 26-10-2003 01:10

Yay, If you log off and close IE out then reopen you only have portal pics gone. Thanks to Brandon or whomever fixed the bug.

-Greg The Great

1 Minute Later: Pics gone again, this is getting even more confusing and annoying. Ne1 know what to make of this, my brain is just about picked clean of possible problems.

5 Minutes Later: I have nothing now, all I have is the unsung FIRST pic.

15 Minutes Later: Now nothing at all, not even the unsung pic.

There has also been a recent increase in the occurrences of "invalid" (bad users, porn, etc) that have registered for the site. Probably just a coincidence.

I don't know if anyone has really fixed anything. This "bug" is really quirky and it is doing some wierd stuff. Most of the problems have been on and off. It does seem better now than in the beginning though.

I am thinking that someone hacked CD's server then threw a make-shift "virus" onto the server, and it somehow is overriding an internet setting for pictures, tht might explain why it only happens on XP pro and with IE 6. I am trying to figure out how to explain its "wierd" behavior, maybe poor programming. I hope CD finds out who did this, if indeed it was done with intent to harm, which I would say is an almost certainity.

KyleGilbert45 26-10-2003 01:56

Some of you people are saying that it's XP Pro.... I would not rule out XP Home cuz it's what i'm running and i'm having the same errors as you people w/ XP Pro.

I would say that it is either a IE 6 worm (since some w/ IE6 are having probs and some arent) or a hacker (which is possible but its weird that Brandon hasn't addressed the issue and it only affects IE)

Same here - XP Home, and I'm missing some of the images. The fact that /. is gone, though, is just scary...

BandChick 26-10-2003 08:59

it is definitely an IE6 problem. I am running IE5 (because I was too lazy to update it) and I have not had a single problem running cd, slashdot, ebay, or any other site.

Did anyone check the microsoft IE site and see if they know what's going on?

Actually its chiefdelphi's problem. It is the only website that this happens on.

patrickrd 26-10-2003 10:02

Okay, so we know that this apparantly started happening suddenly, last night. Since it was so sudden, it is very very unlikely that it is was caused by IE or windows.... Simply because not everybody does windows updates in that amount of time. I haven't run a windows update and it happens to me.

While there is probably a bug in IE which allows this to happen (and always has allowed it), the problem probably started when a change was made to the php code which ultimately spits out HTML. There's something in the html that crashes something in IE and images stop working until you restart it.

I tried validating the site through W3. W3 tried using an algorithm to detect what encoding the site is using. It failed. I suspect there may be some really odd character that is getting inserted into the HTML text somewhere after the last working image and before the first non-working image.

If that's not the cause, this site is not using valid HTML. There's mismatching <font> tags all over the place, for example. According to standard, browsers aren't supposed to be able to support pages like this. I doubt this is the case though, I think it's some encoding problem.

jus thought id state that:cool:

Re: NOT just IE 6 not working

has anyone with this problem tried printing something off of IE? That doesn't work either. Is that related or is it just me?
Eric

Ricky Q. 26-10-2003 11:07

Too bad Brandon's red emergency phone hasn't been hooked up to his house yet, then the CD server could call him at all hours, for him to fix it :-p

Brandon Martus 26-10-2003 11:08

This has happened in the past.
I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is.

I could explain, or I could fix... so I'll fix and then explain :)

Gadget470 26-10-2003 11:16

The bug seems to be on CD's end. To the naysayers saying slashdot is fine and blah blah blah...

Technically.. every site is broken, and every site is working.

For those of you not seeing any problems on CD, every site is working.
For those of you that are seeing problems on CD, you are also seeing at every other site which uses PHP to dynamically create pages.

The problem seems to be some kind of missing fragment of CD's script that isn't allowing the pictures to appear. It seems every image not in /forums/images/___.ext will not appear. (For example: /forums/images/smilies/mad.gif does not appear, but /forums/images/posticonnew.gif does [next to spotlights]) When Properties of an unviewable image is displayed, the correct URL is shown, but the filesize is labeled as -1 bytes.

When you go to any other site after ChiefDelphi that uses PHP, this same problem shows up... to you. Which is why when you, say, go to Google, it's fine. Because Google doesn't use PHP. But SlashDot does.

The only way I see around this, until CD fixes whatever the cause of this is to close all IE windows, clear your Temporary Internet Files, and load back up to other sites, and save CD for the end of the trail.

This post by Greg reminded me of a similar problem a while ago. The latest image in the picture gallery had something with it that IE did not like to render, causing it to choke and not display any other new images from that point on. Once you restarted IE, it worked fine, until trying to load that one image again. So I killed the image, and all is fine.

sonicimpulse99 26-10-2003 11:18

Yeah, I was getting this problem on certian websites, and not on others. And some of those websites are coming back. And Brandon says CD is getting fixed now too. So I guess all we can do it wait and see.

Gadget470 26-10-2003 11:20

I think my post may have just gotten lost.. but it explains why certain sites worked, when others didn't

Brandon Martus 26-10-2003 11:25

Close and restart IE. Problem should be fixed.

IMDWalrus 26-10-2003 11:52

It's moot now, but my problem with /. was that I kep getting "Page Cannot Be Displayed" messages.

Thanks for fixing CD, Brandon. :)

Beth Sweet 26-10-2003 12:39

Only on Cheif Delphi could we fill up 4 pages worth of replys attempting to decide what the problem is with a website...... lol

sanddrag 26-10-2003 12:41

I once batch processed a bunch of jpegs with IfranView and every now and then one would end up coded wierd where it would not resize on a php page in IE. But if I took it into photoshop and saved it from there, it would be fine.

IMDWalrus 26-10-2003 13:06

This is random, but...

Let's just hope that whoever uploaded the image won't try it again...
