Last total Lunar Eclipse TONIGHT
 

For all who don't know, tonight there is a total lunar eclipse. It peaks from 8:05-8:30 I believe. It's the last one for the next couple thousand years. They work as cycles, and tonight is the last total eclipse for a LONG time, there will still be partial eclipses, but over time will be diminishing more and more, so you might want to check it out tonight. You can already start to see it.

Yeah, I've been keeping track of it from around 6pm... very pretty. Luckily, Ithaca was not cloudy today :) :)

Totality is from 8:06pm to 8:31pm. Ends around 10pm.

And I am referring to the Eastern timezone.

I spent some time photographing the moon tonight. There's only so much a 10 X zoom can do, but I got a few I liked.

Yeah, I've been watching it, it's really cool, right now its kinda pinky. I'm in astronomy, and my teacher descibed it in class, but it's way cooler in person!

If you read my post, there is a link that goes into the details, published by NASA that this is the last one produced by this cycle for a long time.

Edit: I just looked around that site a little more, and I learned something else, we're both kinda right... this is the last total lunar eclipse for this particular system and how it works in space, it works over a 6000+ year period, yet there are multiple other systems working as well, and those other systems are the ones producing the total eclipses next year. My mistake, when I ran into that it talked about being the last one for that couple thousand year period, but it was referring to the "Saros 126". Sorry about the messup.

Yeah, I have to say that this lunar eclipse was amazing. The sky was clear up here in MA, so I had an excellent view. I love astronomy. Actually, a couple of years ago, I woke up at 3:30 in the morning to watch a meteor shower (in mid November) :p heh heh... but personally, it was worth it. :D

According to biblical history, mankind was created around 6000 years ago (based on the geneology listed in several places in the bible)

and the moon and stars were put in the heavens for a way to 'mark the times and seasons'

so if some 6000 year old lunar cycle just ended, from a biblical perspective, that could be a sign that something else is ending?

didnt the aztecs or the myans or some south american culture have a calender that ends in the near future? Im thinking it was 2013, but maybe it was this year?

maybe this has something to do with their calender - they were able to predict the lunar eclipses, and they knew when this cycle would end too?

2012 for sure, and if I remember correctly, it was December 11.

well then if the myan calender ends in 2012, they cant be referring to this lunar cycle that ended last week then.

BTW - cutiebeth - im almost afraid to ask about your photo - are those flowers/leaves on the fireplace mantel behind you? it looks sorta like its something you are wearing on your head.

Did you plan the photo that way?

I have a photo I will have to dig up, I was out hiking with a friend and we came across a tree that was uprooted, and over the years the roots had all been cleaned off by the rain and wind.

I sat down in front of it and my friend took a picture - it looks like the giant tree roots are growing out of my head.
