The 9:43 PM Server Bug

As many of you know, the CD server goes down at about 9:43 PM (PST) every night for about 9 minutes. I have always wondered what it is doing during this time.

I'm not sure what this hosting company's (Ventures Online?) policy is but most have a 99.9% uptime guarantee. This means that it will not be up approximately .1% or .001 of the time. There are 1440 minutes in each day. The server is down for about 9 of those minutes every day. 9/1440 = about .6% or .006. Over six times the maximum allowed downtime! So, perhaps there is a free month in this somewhere for CD??...

My $0.02

It is when brandon has the site go down so he can back up the database. It does it automagically.

If I'm wrong brandon, correct me.:]

From what Brandon has told me, it's on the server end... it may be THEM backing it up, but I think he tried fixing it on his end a few times, so I'm pretty sure its on the server end if I'm not mistaken (will wait for Brandon to get on here before saying I'm sure about this)

I'd say it's witchcraft!

I've tried to get them to fix it. They did once. They, and I, have no idea what the problem is. The solution we came up with is to move us to another server.

As for reimbursing us for downtime, they waived the $130 setup fee, and gave us a 10% discount on the server. So, that pretty much accounts for the 1 month of free service.

The new server will be up & running by the end of this month. It's up and running now, actually, but I want to wait for vb3 before I move everything over.

I'm not sure if that's a typo or not, but in any case, it's the best new. word. ever.

That brightened up my morning. :D Not deeply profound but definitely spotlight worthy. Thanks for the laughs. Automagically!

Definitely not a new word. From the Jargon Dictionary: http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms...magically.html

Well, fine. New to me, then :p

I sense a new team slogan...

818: It's Automagic!

I'll see how well it goes over at the meeting tomorrow. :D

...and to follow up with a similar thought, how about:

Indianagineers! (n.: In-di-ae-nah-jih-nir : any resident of Gary, Indiana, or it's suburbs, who is trained in the use or design of machines or engines, or in other areas such as electrical or chemical technology)

Seems like that one should be right up there with "automagically" (which has been around for a while - I even heard it way back when I was a young'un).
