Only 58 Regional spots left...
As of right now there are only 58 Regional spots left....
Will they all be filled by this time tomorrow night? Since there are only 4.8% of the total available spots left, my bet is YES. |

FIRST here my call. 937 Teams and counting. I say 2 or 3 more at least! -Greg The Great |
NU wants to do the Blitz because ultimately... they want a regional. I feel so tempted just to go up to them and say 'hey, lets go try to put one together in 3 months?!'
It's unrealistic, but a girl can dream. |

reminder
It will be intersting to see how many teams sign up for three Regionals tomorrow.
Keep in mind, as many have pointed out in some other threads - there are not only 58 spots left. More than half of the regionals hold a few spots (2-5 on average) for late registering rookie teams, and will typically open some of these spots at the end of registration if they are unused. I know this has been done the past couple years. two other things to keep in mind: *every year a few teams decide they aren't prepared enough (not enough fundraising, support, resources, etc...) and withdraw towars the end of November. *remember that the ideal number of teams for any event, if one "assumes" there will be an even number of teams in each match (say 4 or 6) is a multiple of 4 or 6. So if you see events with "odd" capacity numbers, odds are there are a few spots to be added. So while the 58 currently open spots may fill, or come close, tomorrow - there will probably still be 50 or more spots opening in the next few weeks. I'd say FIRST did a good job of predicting growth and started the exact right number of events for 2004. All teams who wanted to go to two events were able (which to me is the best indicator if they don't have enough regionals), and I would guess that less than 58 teams will go to three Regionals (they've never had that many go to three in the past, so if that holds, there is no need for additional events this year). I would agree with Greg that FIRST will probably need 2 or 3 more regionals next year. Based on their almost right on prediction this year, I'd bet they are planning 2 or 3 more already for next year and the year after. |
They may be adding more regionals and expanding others but I know for a fact the new york regional has gotten smaller and smaller, from 36 to 30, and now it's 26 or 28. The Annapolis Regional also lost 6 spots I believe.

I would wager that NY will have 30 teams (or even a couple more) and that Annapolis will have 60-64 teams. If not, then you can refer to this post and let me know how clueless I was (but know - you won't be the first to make that claim) Lavery, Baker, and....oh, too many to mention - be quiet. :D |

I retract most of my statement, but NYC did go down from 36 spots.

Personally I think that as long as most teams (pay attention to the word most) don't have to drive for hours and hours or days to get to a regional, then FIRST is doing fine and we have enough regionals. The only other thing I would want to make sure happens is that everyone gets to go to at least one regional event - but that's more than taken care of...*points to teams registering for 3 regionals*
This isn't to say that I wouldn't like more though! :) |

I understand that a regional is almost totally out of the question, I think it however is needed because of the large number of teams this year. Oh, FIRST also needs more staff, you mentioned that they are having trouble running the regionals as it is, FIRST either needs more staff or lengthen the season (competition section). My opinions do not reflect the opinions of Team Hammond, Beatty Machine, School City of Hammond, or any one else but myself. -Greg The Great |
I would say that not only would it be hard to throw together a regional in a month, I'd say it's next to impossible. We've been working on the Rochester Regional for about the past two months (well, really since last spring but it really picked up steam this fall) and, at this point, we don't even have all of the committee heads finalized yet. To get a regional committee to the point of being able to hold a regional next year in a month would be an outragous logistic attempt. We already feel like we're behind schedule in Rochester and we have over a year to go.
As to FIRST needing more staff, I'm not really sure if that's going to be necessary. FIRST has started to rely more and more on local Regional Committees for the running of the actual regional. Through the way its running the regional process, FIRST is returning more to the grass roots effort that has worked so well with team growth. Matt |
