FIRST Regional Music Playlist

Coming from the FIRST Music thread, I think we should get everyone to suggest one or two songs that we could recommend FIRST play at regionals. Our favorites. I'll update this post with the songs and who recommended them...

Also, if you want people to RECOGNIZE the songs, also provide a link to iTunes or an mp3 so we know.

Rules:
  • No bad lyrics.
  • Song length around 4-5 mins, not 'Stairway to Heaven' ballads guys ;)
  • Make the songs somewhat relevant to FIRST, robotics, technology, or something like that.

Oh darn I didn't read the part about a few songs.
I guess I'll chose:

Blink 182 - Go
NoFX - Vincent
Offspring - Hit That

Although all the songs I mentioned earlier should be taken in consideration!

Oh and by the way all the songs I posted in the long list ARE the BEST songs. Not just songs I like.

IMDWalrus 17-11-2003 20:09

How about two groups? The Barenaked Ladies should definitely be thrown in there, as well as everyone's favorite, They Might Be Giants.

The day I hear "Particle Man" played at a FIRST regional will be the day that all is right in the world...:)

Song Title- Band/Artist

Such as.....

Celebrity- Barenaked Ladies

Michelle 236 17-11-2003 20:42

Hurts So Good OR Small Town - John Mellencamp

BandChick 17-11-2003 20:56

Your up there, look at the first post.

sanddrag 17-11-2003 21:24

We can't forget those FIRST classics:
Drops of Jupiter - Train
Eye of the Tiger - Survivor

And I'll add a couple of my recent favorites:

Clocks - Coldplay
Something - Lasgo
Unwell - Matchbox Twenty
Stuck - Stacie Orrico
The Game of Love - Michelle Branch and Santana
Why Can't I - Liz Phair
Where Are You Going - Dave Matthews Band

Madison 17-11-2003 21:29

Hrm. For a FIRST event, I'd recommend:
  • Spirit in the Sky -- Doctor and The Medics (1986)
  • Lady Don't Tek No -- Latyrx
  • Weird Science (Extended Mix) -- Oingo Boingo
  • Neutron Dance -- Pointer Sisters
  • Groove is in the Heart -- Deee-lite
  • Genius of Love -- Tom Tom Club

...for starters.

Whoa, what has happened to my thread. Well, as for contributions, I'd have to say: (song-artist)

Move Your Feet-Junior Senior
Where It's At-Beck

As for the ban list, I'd have to start with Sandstorm, of course.

Joe Matt 17-11-2003 21:34

Well, since people want more songs, ok then. Max 10 songs.

?!?!?!?!?! Ban List?! You'd consider banning Sandstorm.... How can you diss one of the greatest, most enthralling and captivating techno songs ever?!?!?!....

:( That is all.

Jeremy_Mc 17-11-2003 22:05

Exploring Robot - Verdu Harding
Collapse, Destroy, Ruin - The Sky Between
Phantoms Now - Armor for Sleep
We've Been Had - The Walkmen
Rigged and Ready - Northstar (Gotta support the hometown kids ;))
Hot Anger Soon Cold - thesnakethecrossthecrown
Bullets to Binary - mewithoutYou

And now for a band someone's actually heard of...

Softer to Me - Reliant K

If anyone wants links to these songs, I can provide. These are actually decent bands even though I'm sure 90% of the CD crowd hasn't heard of over half of them...

kristinL356 17-11-2003 22:22

My Favorite Accident - Motion City Soundtrack (which is an actual band not a soundtrack to a movie)
The Future Freaks Me Out - Motion City Soundtrack
Modern Chemistry - Motion City Soundtrack
Perfect Teeth - Motion City Sountrack
Autographs & Apologies - Motion City Soundtrack
Indoor Living - Motion City Soundtrack
Boombox Generation - Motion City Soundtrack
Capital H - Motion City Soundtrack
Throw Down - Motion City Soundtrack
The Here Away - Motion City Soundtrack

Holy crap. Why did I write out Motion city Soundtrack that many times. MCS from now on.

I agree 100%. Hearing "Particle Man" would be awesome. How about "Too Little Too Late", "It's All Been Done", and "Pinch Me"? Phantom Planet, OAR, DMB, Coldplay, and the Goo Goo Dolls would also go over quite well, by my standards, anyways. These are the more "rock" bands that I like. I realize that not everybody likes Punk, and god forbid I mention a Ska band or two ::coughreelbigfishandcatch-22cough::..

Arrowsmith 17-11-2003 22:38

1. Lifestyles of the rich and famous- Good Charlotte
2. Dare to be Stupid- Wierd Al Yankovic
3. Times like these- Foo Fighters
4. Castaway- Green Day

There's a bunch of other songs, but I don't know who makes them.

Madison 17-11-2003 22:44

I get four more :)
  • When I Get You Alone -- Thicke
  • Paradise by the Dashboard Light -- Meatloaf A. Day
  • Dream A Dream (Miami Booty Remix) -- Captain Jack
  • Doin' Time (Martial Arts Remix) -- Sublime and Pharcyde

J Flex 188 18-11-2003 01:20

Might I point out that members of the Barenaked Ladies are Canadian, and which is even more exciting, a couple of members (steven paige) and im not sure, but someone graduated from our very own, humble little school. thats right folks, from woburn collegiate.. also from a local middle school that i went to as well... exciting stuff no?

also.. there seems to be only one or two genres of music being explored...anything high energy is great, including hiphop, techno, whatever else you can think of

swollen members - watch this, steppin thru, etc.. BC based hiphop

run dmc - run's house, its tricky

nelly - batter up? .. thats always pretty high energy

daniel beddingfield - gotta get through this

dont know how applicable these are, but = )

Elgin Clock 18-11-2003 12:22

What's everyone's beef with Sandstorm??

As for music that are FIRST staples:

Styx - Mr. Roboto
Harry Belefonte - Hot Hot Hot
Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine - Congo

As for Songs I want to see incorporated this year:

Tatu - Robot
DDR stuff all the way!!
Beastie Boys - Intergalactic
Winx - Don't Laugh (Original or Remix)
Robbie Williams - Rock DJ
Sash - Encore Une Fois
StarSailor - Good Souls
Sugarbees - Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Blues
Trapt - Headstrong
and finally...(drum roll please)
Kraftwerk - We are the Robots!!

edit: Just Keep in mind that it is more than likely an outside DJ (re: not FIRST staff or Volunteer) that plays the songs at the Regionals and Nationals so ask them when you get there whether or not you can make requests and\or whether or not you can have them play a cd of your own.

Some of them are ok with that, and some are not!

DUCKIE 18-11-2003 14:10

BNL-who needs sleep
Queen- another one bites the dust

They are the two songs i relate FIRST most to.... and some Red Hot Chili Peppers (love rolercoaster?) would be nice to hear at a regional too.

new found glory - the goodbye song
trapt - headstrong
nightwish - she is my sin
nightwish - wishmaster
megadeth - trust
millencolin - mr. clean
rufio - above me
blind guardian - bright eyes
blind guardian - battlefield

IMDWalrus 18-11-2003 14:54

Going with my original two groups...

Barenaked Ladies - I'd go with the faster paced, more "radio friendly" songs - One Week, It's All Been Done, Who Needs Sleep, Another Postcard, and their ilk.

TMBG - Particle Man is a definite must. I'd also consider Istanbul and maybe Dr. Worm. Other than that...I'd leave it up to the DJ. Most of TMBG's songs would work just fine for a FIRST event.

I'm also into classic rock. Queen is always good (Bohemian Rhapsody would be great during a break in the action), as are the Beatles (again, the fast paced songs would work best).

Some Cake (maybe I Will Survive with a minor edit) or Eels (My Beloved Monster, maybe?) would be nice, but that's probably asking too much...

I've got a lot more ideas; I'm just trying to keep my list somewhat close to the limits. I think I've already blown it, though...:D

BandChick 18-11-2003 17:01

KevinB 18-11-2003 20:51

Wow ... this list surprised me ... I didn't know FIRST had so many "punk" fans. Which is cool ... FIRST needs upbeat music as opposed to slow pop junk.

I'm really surprised as to how many people like, let alone have heard of Relient K. Do people actually listen to them where you live? The *only* reason I've even heard the name is because I went to one of their shows with my ex-girlfriend. (I must say I was reasonably impressed ... for a christian band)

Finally, un-ban Sandstorm. It is perfect for a FIRST event. Techno forever!

Jay W. 18-11-2003 21:34

I'm likeo one of the only guys in my area that I know of that listens to Reliant K, but I love their music, and belive it or not they are considered a punk band. Oh, listen to Mood Ring, reeal good song for us of the male sex...

And here is my revised list-
Chap Stick, Chapped Lips, and Things Like Chemistry - Reliant K
Pressing On - Reliant K
Kryptonite - Three Doors Down
Get it Right - The Offspring
Pretty Fly (For a White Guy) - The Offspring
Smooth Criminal - Alien Antfarm

I'll think of four more, and post them at a later date

Megadeth -Hanger 18
Black Sabbath -Paranoid
Welcome To The Jungle -GnR
Stone Cold Crazy -Metallica Version
Kill Your Children -Hemlock (Just Kiddin!)

galewind 21-11-2003 11:38

I like a lot of songs without lyrics, or sometimes those with lyric samples...

Propellerheads - Spybreak
Robert Dougan - Furious Angel
Wiseguys - Start the Commotion

and of course:

They Might Be Giants - Robot Parade ;)

Joe Matt 21-11-2003 11:44

I'm going to create a master list this evening, I've been busy lately, so hold on.

Joe Matt 21-11-2003 13:49

You're so scatter brained Rhiza. :p

JAH 21-11-2003 15:32

I'll follow the formerly stated two rule.

The Distance - CAKE
Body Movin' - The Beastie Boys

Those are two songs I'd like to hear at a FIRST regional. They probably aren't my favorite, but for an energetic crowd of sorts, they would be good in my opinion.

Edit- Well, I'm not going to follow the two rule. I don't know if anyone listed this yet but Fuel by Metallica.

J Flex 188 21-11-2003 22:26

nah! i agree.. gotta have some variety in there..cant believe i forgot outkast... one of the freshest tandems around.

Vincent Chan 22-11-2003 12:36

10, eh?

REM - What's The Frequency Kenneth?
Pat McGee Band - Runaway
Goo Goo Dolls - Slide
Timo Maas - To Get Down
Cowboy Mouth - Light It On Fire
Will Hoge - Sunshine Burn
Third Eye Blind - Semicharmed Life
Live - They Stood Up For Love
Pearl Jam - Light Years
Reel Big Fish - Brown Eyed Girl

Finally, not one of my own, but I'm in agreement with those who like NOFXs cover of Don McLean's "Vincent"

perhapsimcrazy 23-11-2003 19:32

Anything by Pink Floyd.

Looking over this list and from my times being on the field I think I have some suggestions to make for some music at regionals.

1. The Who - "Pinball Wizard"
2. The Eagles - "Hotel California"
3. Creed - "One"
4. U2 - "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"
5. Tom Petty - "Won't Back Down"
6. Steppenwolf - "Born to Be Wild"
7. Rob Zombie - "Never Gonna Stop"
8. Powerman 5000 - "When Worlds Collide"
9. Metallica - "For Whom the Bell Tolls"
10. Linkin Park - "Faint"

All I know is that this is the short list of songs I would have loved to heard when I was out on that field. Just my 2 cents. Enjoy!!

Sum41-Still Waiting is unfortunately an inappropriate song. In the first line or 2 they sing about ...well read for yourselves >>>>

"Drop dead
A bullet to my head
Your words are like a gun in hand
You can't change the state of the nation
We just need some motivation"

I don't know how "inapproproate" it is but i was going to use that on my teams flash intro and was told it was inappropriate because of that line.

Trance[]control music is good 'cause there are no words & most of their songs are about 5 minutes long. I would also like to suggest Boom and Our Time has Come by P.O.D.

I will personally kill a new born baby if a Linkin Park, Sum 41, or any other crappy nu-metal emo band gets on there.

Ah well it doesn't really matter, the only two things that I've seen that I would approve being on it is Bad Religion and NOFX.

This list needs more good power metal... and for technology? hmm..

BAD RELIGION - 21st Century Digital Boy

Buckethead - Nun Chuka Kata (awesome awesome no vocals just straight guitar bliss)

Falconer - Wings of Serenity

Even if it doesn't make it, I highly suggest all of you download the Falconer song if you are remotely interested in Metal and awesome vocals with awesome guitar work.

EDIT: And for the nerds out there (everyone)

Halo - Opening Suite

i do agree w/ the above stated, but we should probably just gather up the young ones because they will play all the sold out music they can get there hands on because for some reason they dont want to play techno at robotics any more!?!? the only thing at a ROBOTICS compitition should be TECHNO

Brim Full of Asha - Cornershop
867-5309 - Tommy Tutone

It was not too popular a few years ago when it was released, though it was remixed by Fatboy Slim and I'm sure that's where most people who've heard of it first encountered it. It's a good song.

If it's going to be that song, it should really be the original, sung by Richard O'Brien, or Riff Raff, of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. :)

Anyway... Anything Iron Maiden would do. Metallica, too, but a lot of the more popular songs are really long. Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train would be awesome to hear.

If it hasn't been suggested yet, how about "Stairway to Heaven?"

Could be a perfect fit with this year's game... :D

hehe, this is quite funny because one of the original rules in suggesting songs was "* Song length around 4-5 mins, not 'Stairway to Heaven' ballads guys". :D
but yea... i agree that since one of the FIRST game hints were lyrics from stairway to heaven, it might make a good themesong! :p

Ahhh, seems like everyone is lashing back at all of the trance that was played at previous regionals (whats wrong with Sandstorm?) My recommendations are anything from:

Paul Oakenfold
Paul van Dyk
Groove Coverage
DJ Tiesto
Ian van Dahl
Ministry of Sound compilations!!!
Arminn van Buuren
PPK

Others I'm sure will come to mind.
