Air-powered motors
I have it on (very) good authority that this years kit will include some sort of air driven motor(s). I was told by an insider who deals with pneumatics and such, so it is a reliable statistic.

Re: Air-powered motors
i heard about this too
but the efficency of the compressor being close to 30% and it having a long recharge time I doubt to be seeing it used in drivetrain |

Re: Air-powered motors
from my opinion i dont think FIRST will really let us use the compressor we want to use...

Re: Air-powered motors
Air powered motor... C'mon, where's the gasoline engines? :p
Anyway, it would sound pretty cool though, like an impact wrench like they use in the pits at the races. |

Re: Air-powered motors
i dobut we will see new compressor rules this year mm but i like the idea of air driven motor

Re: Air-powered motors
Air good. CO2 better. Compressor bad.

Re: Air-powered motors
Air motors would be cool. I'd like to see one in the kit this year. I'd bet it won't happen, but I will be pleasantly surprised if it does.

Re: Air-powered motors
so it looks like my 6 motor cvt will have a change in design.....

Re: Air-powered motors
Air motors would be awesome. I havn't really looked into it, but they would prolly have to be pretty small if you wanted to use them for any period of time. These would have plenty of applications, bc u can stall them as much as you want. Another thing that would be cool, would be pnumatic rotary actuators. They are sortof like pnumatic motors, but they have a limited degree of rotation. They are kindof like giant hobby servos without the position control(although position control can be accomplished with proper feedback and valves.). If you ask me, FIRST needs to look beyond plain old cylinders. There is sooo much more to pnumatics than that. At the very least we should be able to use rodless cylinders or multiposition cylinders.

Re: Air-powered motors
the primary advantage of an air powered motor is that it would be small and very light compaird to an equivalant electric motor
so it would be the ideal for something at the end of an arm, or high up from the desired CG of the bot. |

Re: Air-powered motors
you could also implement an air powered wrench or chisle
to take apart your enemies, er I mean opponents robot during the match. wait! what am I thinking?! sorry - lost my mind there just for a moment! :c) |
Re: Air-powered motors
Hmm maybe a tube from the robot to the human player so the human player can, ::Blow:: ::Blow ::Blow:: :: Faint:: new human player comes up... repeat
