Keying a shaft
 

I am trying to create a keyed shaft, but I am not sure how you would go about doing it. I figured the easiest way would be to look at the face of the shaft and then draw the outline of the keyway, then cut it out, but it will not let me do that, or I am trying to do it wrong. I al also trying to do the same thing with gears, but I assume that would be the same process. Any help you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

oops! my mistake - I just noticed you are in the CAD forum - I thought you were trying to cut metal with a tool in the shop

that should work for the keyed shaft.

for the gear, draw a circle and then one tooth then circle pattern it around and extude. however, if ur doing something complicated like an assembly, i would STRONGLY advise not to use teeth. this will make ur inventor go so slow and maybe even crash...not to mention those constaints :( what i did was make a simple circle with the dimensions. much easier on the machine and me

I believe there is an i-keyed shaft part for Inventor on the FIRST CAD Library. The site is currently down it seems, but if you PM Ed he could probably send you to file.
