Number of Files on a computer

Just this morning, I ran a count of the number of files on my computer. I came up with 262,517 files and 18,393 directories. How many do you guys have? The computer with most files wins... something.

I don't know how to tell how many files and directories I have. Also, can that include Linux files and directories or just Windows?

I just wrote a small program in Perl to take the output file number from "dir /s /a" and add this for all the partitions on my computer. If you can think of an easy way to do this under linux/etc, excellent. If not, count as many files as you can (i have many duplicates of some files for unknown reasons - every copy counts separately).

on windows, you could go to start > search > for files and folders > and set the search criteria as an * :)

Make sure it finds hidden files/folders too.

Nah, on windows you just highlight a drive, right click --> properties.

2 drives, 93gb total --> 149000+ files, 1300+ directories.

Re: Number of Files on a computer

I only have 4 files - two that are flat, one that is half round, and a rat-tail

and I can easily put all four ontop of my computers (my big floor case PC or on my notebook)

I think my wife has a couple nail-files around

but from the size of my PC case, I would guess I can get maybe 15 or 20 files on my computer.

Ive seen photos of old mainframes that would fill up a small room. Ill bet you could put hundreds of files on those things, maybe thousands!

but to be honest, Im not sure why you would want to - Mine tend to get metal dust on them, and I keep my files in my toolbox in the garage

not on my PC.

I couldn't figure out how to find the number of files and folders, but when I searched for * it took about a minute and says 59,265 objects. (files and folders combined) (shortcuts and that stuff are just files) I am not sure how I got this number, but my Linux partition has an aditional 2,231 files and a few more directories than what was originally installed. I am not sure if that 2,... number is correct.

But on some versions of windows, there is a maximum search number allowed and anything after that will not show up.

As for the computer i'm using now, the stats are:

36,585 Files - 1,983 Folders

Hmm. There's 60,000 on the parents desktop. 300,000 between my laptop and 100gb drive on the desktop (I forgot I had it shared when I started the search). There's 30,000 files on my server. Then theres still my 40gb drive and 200gb drive on the desktop. I'd say I have well over half a million files.

*nix: find / -print > tmp ; wc -l tmp ; rm tmp (old one counted lines of every file :P)

Come to think of it, there's probably 40,000 files or so on my backup server drive that doesn't work in the computer. I estimate there's 200,000 files or so on my 40gb drive. It holds WinXP/Gentoo. My 200gb drive probably has 30k files.

If my estimations are correct, I have 660,000 files. My personal storage space is 400gb (340gb in the desktop, 60gb in the powerbook). Adding my parents and sisters computers, I have 500gb.

Actually, my estimate was low for my desktop. There were 405,000 files on my 200gb and 40gb combined. So I have 835,000 files

So am I winning? :P

Re: Number of Files on a computer

I think this is a little too vague to be a competition. I just counted the computer that I am using. I have two others with well over 60,000 files combined, plus my dad's computer with about 90,000 files and my brother's with approximately 102,000 files. Then, my parents use a network of computers for their buisness work. Three computers with a combined count of 411,500 files. Another computer, the server, has about 30,000 files on it.

If you want to get even more technical, I have a collection of sports watches that are basically a computer. I don't know how you would count that information. I have a Playstation 2, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genisus, and an original Gameboy that all use files. I have a cell phone that runs on programs and files. It even stores each entry in the address book in a different file. I have a TI-83 calculator that uses files. I also have two game system memory cards that store files.

So, I think you should clarify the definition of a file a little more.
