2004 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

Mark your calendars now!

Tentative dates (because anything 7 months away is always tentative) for the 2004 IRI are July 9 and 10 (Friday and Saturday).

Location is Lawrence North High School (same as 2002 and 2003).

Watch for more news as the official FIRST season closes.

We are planning for many of the same types of activities and will add some enhancements from 2003.

Watch for: IRI Chairman's award, Animation, Human Player game, a Cook-out, Guest announcers, TV coverage and more.

Each team's entry fee requirements for 2004 will include a special 'donation' for a local elementary school. :)

Can't wait. IRI was the best event of the 2003 season, IMO.

I'm looking forward to it! That, and the roadtrip and the stays in the Omni. hope to see as great a turn-out as last year =)

I'm there. The IRI was the best competition I've been to, not including those two trips to Epcot.

Mid-July, baby, I-R-I. [/nsync]

WOOOO!!! The Marcus's will be back! :]

We appreciate all the great comments that everybody gives us. We work really hard to make this the BEST FIRST event of the entire season. I cant wait to see everybody back there again in July '04!!

Back home again, in Indiana!! [/Ghomer] ;)

I'll be there again this summer. Last years event really was well run and quite competitive. Hopefully I'll be on a competiting team this year... if not I'll gladly volunteer to help out again. Hey Dave, know if any more judges are needed? :D

I'll be there again, the 2003 IRI was the best competition I've been to. I wouldn't miss the 2004 one for the world. Unfortunatly, I doubt my team will be able to attend because that's a long trip from Florida, but I will definitly do my best convincing to try to get us to go ;)

No its never too late, teams always like to get dates ahead of time so that they can plan for later on down the line. If this were posted next week then it would have a high chance of getting lost in all the chaos. Put the date out early so that mostly everyone will see it before the real FIRST season starts up. We never stop planning the IRI. Why wait until after the Championships are over in mid April to announce the event, and only give teams 2 + months to think about the date?

i would go with the jealous ;) perhaps find someone around there going and beg for a ride? i mean, mike dez (dez250) trekked all the way down to 222's hometown just to go. maybe take a train down into jersey and beg for a ride from myself or the other sarah going. it IS possible, just takes a little determination.

A little determination and a heck of a lot of reading material...

<---- 25 hours on a Greyhound Bus to get to IRI...

PS I should be there this year, but I think I'll take a plane or drive :D

A) The IRI committee picked a great date. :)
B) There are several things in the works that will be debuted at the IRI.
C) There's no way in heck I'm NOT staying at the Omni this year (and missing out on all the fun).

Woo! I can't wait!

I stayed at the Omni last year one night, but I was so tired from staying up 42 hrs in a row I walked into my hotel room, tossed my bag to the floor, went over and sat in the chair and the next thing I knew it was morning. I missed all the fun :(

Anyway, this year IRI is going to be bigger and better then before, and i reccomend that when registration opens you register quick. I have a feeling spots will go fast.

The Omni, more specifically my and Big Mike's hotel room, was alot of fun. We had about 10 FIRST-ers in there listening to story time featuring JVN until 3 in the morning two nights. Fun times.

The second night we weren't in there till 3 cause Mike kicked us out :(. But we still managed to have fun running around the hotel at 2AM and taking pictures of the door of room 201 :).

They had an alarm clock, but it only works if you set it ;). Maybe they should have just stayed up when Ken left at 5AM...

An alarm clock isnt going to do too much good if he does something like...oh I dont know taking a hammer to it and smashing it to little pieces, throwing it against the wall till it breaks, tearing out the power cord/winder/batteries, turning it off...and so on. I think you would be better off getting a group of people to sing a morning greeting outside his door if he isnt up in time. :D

yes, definitely. not to mention the 12 hour drive looking for ANYthing on the road that said 1089 (and that's no easy feat!). but we did find one, (mile 108 and 9 tenths) heading out of Pennsylvania.

Perhaps there might be a pool fight again this year? ;)

Yeah, that happened at around 3 or 4 am. I couldnt sleep so i went out in there and watched a while, then clark, kyle, and i walked (i walked around barefoot) around the school till the tv stations showed up. We played basketball in the aux gym and looked at everyones pits and robots :D

Great fun, I got a little scared when we were wondering around and that janitor "saw" us.lol.... The xbox was cool really big, but we didnt have audio and for some reason it didnt fit right so Halo didnt work well...Hockey was cool though. Although I'm not on a team I'll definetly be back at IRI next year.

It didn't help that we stayed up really late that night watching a movie.

BTW For anybody that is going to be flying to IRI be sure that you get a Limo instead of a taxi. I learned this the hard way. When the time comes I will post the number of a good limo company at the airport which I used to get to the bus station. It only cost me $11 from the airport to the bus station. As opposed to $43 from the bus station to the Omni.

Actually thats mostly my fault because as Ken left he woke me up and then I was supposed to get up and shower then wake up John and Aaron, but instead I just fell back asleep... But the movie the night before was so horribly made it was funny, and somehow it led to us deciding that Johns new name was Johnny Van-Neun, I don't quite remember how we came to that conclusion.

I think the phone call went something like this:

Roughly 9-9:30 AM (I believe)
Ring

JVN: "Hello?"

AB: "Hey John, its Andy and there is this robotics competition going on down the street and I was just wondering if you were going to show up?"

Ehh something like that....

Ken....I'm so glad to see that you will be at IRI again this year! In addition to doing an OUTSTANDING job with scoring, I had a great time getting to know you last year!

We wanted to get IRI dates out there so people could get the dates on their calendar. With the number of teams that are interested in coming, we thought it would be good to post early!

Good luck to everyone! :D

The dates/ location etc are confirmed in this post and will be July 9 & 10th. I hope to be able to update IndianaFIRST.org in the very near future. But that likely won't be able to happen until after nationals and when the IRI Committee starts having their meetings on a regular basis. We will keep you updated on all announcements concerning the IRI :]

Hopefully after this FIRST season, we'll do some minor retooling and work on the IndianaFIRST site to post more information on the IRI.

B: Stealing Me
C: Stealing 1083's robot
D: All of the above

SO it looks like i might be going this year. A bunch of us on 1083 are probably wanting to go, maybe you will get a florida bot there?

You heard right Scott is cooking the meal and beef is on the menu. I was thinking I could post pictures of the four possible cows that are in line to pay the ultimate price for the IRI and we could vote for which will be invited to dinner with us. Maybe we could assign a cow to certain IRI teams and the one that is with the lost seeded team would take the trailer ride. I am sure this would increase robotic spirit in the pasture field. I can honestly say that the cows have a lack of spirit when it comes to robotics and this could be the cure all.

Just kidding
(I am the cook though)

The students, mentors, and teachers are all on board, and Team 48 would love to attend the IRI again this year if we are given the chance to register.

Scott, do you think I could pass as a 17 year old kid (please refer to disturbingly ugly photo above)? I'd love to get a chance at driving our robot in a somewhat organized scrimmage against the other IRI teams. Our drivers, Frank and Paco, have had too much fun this year - I think it would be great to let all the mentors take their bots for a spin. Maybe we can all sneak into LNHS at 3 AM and head out to the playing field for a battle royale? One can dream, can't he? :-)

Could you imagine an all mentors round after we put the kids to bed? We can only dream though. I can view you as a kid but the 17 thing is a little tuff. Anyways if we were in there at 3am the robot elves would be all honked off if we interrupted their tournament. You know those elves, we wouldn't want to honk them off now would we or we couldn't get our robots built in six weeks. Without having that overnight elf help what would we all do? ;)

YES! I WANT TO DRIVE AGAIN!!! ITS BEEN TOO LONG!!!! :yikes:
Sorry...gotta get the team there first before I can hope for something like this.

I believe one of the Michigan off-season events has something like this. They have an all-girls event, and then an all-engineer/coach event.

I think it's called the 'YOU THINK YOU CAN DO IT BETTER?!' event.

... and what an appropriate name that may be... ;)

we used to do them at mayhem in miami. I rember when we were DJing we put on "Girls" by beastie boys for finals in the all girls matches.

Re: 2004 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

I think Brandon may be thinking of the Ford Sweet Repeat up in Rochester. I know they have an all-girls competition because we won that and the regular competition in 2001. There may be other competitions with that sort of setup, as well. Sweet Repeat is a good one, though.

I think an "Adult Only" series of matches is now on the agenda for the IRI.

We will have student referees......

I would glady volunteer to be a referee for this! :D Wow, I'm glad I remembered that from Sweet Repeat (I think)... seems like people really like the idea of it :]

Depends on how much the college students are willing to pay the organizing committee (Andy / Libby / Me).

Maybe matches for anyone that is not on a high school team. That way we won't rob the teams of toooo many matches.

Yep at the FSR last year, I think they scheduled the all-girls matches and as well as a Mentors competition. But I think the Mentor's one actually got cancelled due to time... That was a bummer.. but it'll be great if they try it again this year!

Re: 2004 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

Yay IRI! I'm looking forward to it being my last robotics compitition. Although I have retired from driving to the best of my knowledge... so does that make me a Mentor? After all I can't touch the robot so I've been told... after all someone has to fill these shoes... lol you try being driver. Anyways an all Adult compitition would be cool and it would put our mentors back in line cause they entered the one at Sweet Repeat last year and since it didn't happen they said they won by default and we have been hearing it ever since  . IRI has been great of the past few years... and got signifigantly bigger last year... it went from like 30 to like 50 teams! Now thats a compitition!

Re: 2004 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

Here is the latest update for the 2004 IRI!

July 9 and 10
Lawrence North High School
Indianapolis, IN (northeast side)

Registration for teams begins May 14.

Volunteer applications begin May 14.

Expected Registration Fee $350 - $400,
plus a backpack filled with 2nd grader materials ($25 or so).

60 Teams.

We are planning several 'special' activities for the IRI.
These are not absolute, but high on the likelihood list:

An 'adults only' round (that counts in your team ranking, just because).
A cook-out for all teams on Friday Night (Scott Ritchie on the grille)
A fun-filled breakfast on Saturday Morning
A "Presidents Award" that will sound similar to the FIRST Chairman's Award
A Mentor of the Year Award
A Human Player-based game
Special individual and team awards
A "talent show" for your entertainment
Great Fun
Some special guests (I hear the Invisible Man is coming!)

.. and more

Registration information will be posted on Chief Delphi and IndianaFIRST.org.

If it ain't posted by me, don't believe it

Just to let the masses know - Sam Harding and I will be bringing Dance Dance Revolution... not sure when it would be played, most likely after the matches, and we'll make sure to bring the hard pad that he made (it's very good).

It's not official yet, but 818 is thinking about coming down this year. The problem is that we'd be sending a skeleton crew, and we're not officially sponsored by the team (we're a bit broke right now), so we've got to come up with our own hotel and registration fees.

Still...I'd love to go, if we're able to. If 818 is going, I'm there. :)

Yep, I love my grandpa.

2 nights before IRI last year:
Me: "Pop, I wanna go to a competition the day after tommorow in Indiana."
Pop: "I'll be over in 4 hours... I'm gonna take a nap first."

*Arrive at 4am on day of competition*

Definitly worth the trip, best competition I've ever gone to... loved it, not missing it for the world this year.

It's a pretty decent establishment, but its 20 miles outside of Indy and you could run into some heavy traffic in the mornings....the I-465/I-70 construction is over now, but there have been some police visits to the place due to some campers causing trouble there or outside of there..nothing major that ive seen in the last year...

Just a friendly heads up

I still reccommend as many people staying in the Omni as possible. So many good times were had, and well, even if you don't stay there, definitely come visit us that WILL be there (ie: me). The hotel was one of the best parts of IRI. Like singing Star Wars and various Disney songs in the Sauna, and looking for room 201 just for a photo.

It's all about location, and who you spend your time with. So camping or not, come visit the FIRSTers in the Omni!

I agree with Sara. I didn't stay at the Omni last year... but I ended up going there as much as I could because it was a BLAST. It was very entertaining, I'd suggest going there if your team wants to be able to interact more with other teams outside of the competition as well and just have fun.

Why do you think the people in my room kinda snuck in, went straight to our rooms, shut the door, double locked it, and went to bed right away? :p

Because you stayed up all night with a bunch of fools (including myself) walking around the school with no shoes, trying to run away from the janitors, playing basketball in the pits, and a bunch of other dumb stuff. Oh, never mind, we actually stayed up so that we could prepare for the live tv interviews and to see the anchor lady from FOX. ;) I think im going to try to sleep in the bed of my truck and lock myself inside the bed cover this year. :yikes:

They do a registration system like regionals. This year they're letting 60 teams (I believe, someone correct me if I'm wrong) and when registration opens it's pretty much first come-first serve, as far as I know.
